BJP taking credit for Bengaluru Metro project, says minister Ramalinga Reddy

Time of India2 days ago
Bengaluru: Transport minister Ramalinga Reddy has accused the BJP of claiming credit for
Namma Metro
projects.
Addressing mediapersons Saturday, a day before the Yellow Line inauguration, Reddy alleged BJP state president BY Vijayendra and Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, among others, have taken credit for all Metro projects.
The minister said the state govt is not a minor partner in Metro projects but a major stakeholder. "In Phase 1, Karnataka govt contributed 30% (including land); central govt share was 25% and the remaining was borrowed by BMRCL. In Phase 2, Karnataka contributed 30% plus land and most of the cost overruns, while the central govt contributed only 20%. The remaining 50% was borrowed. For Phase 3, Karnataka provided 20% funding, land and resettlement costs; central govt provided 20% and the remaining 60% was borrowed," he said.

Reddy alleged that BJP functionaries who claim credit appear to be unaware of Metro's history — that the foundation stone was laid by then PM Manmohan Singh in 2006 when Dharam Singh (Congress) was CM. "Metro project belongs to the people, and is not the property of any political party. BJP functionaries are more interested in publicity than work, claiming credit for others' efforts," Reddy said.

Saving The Constitution: Rahul Gandhi As Police Halt INDIA Bloc's EC March

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi linked the INDIA bloc leaders march to Election Commission as a "fight to save the Constitution" and a demanded a "pure" voters list while Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi accused the BJP-led Union governmnt of being "scared". Delhi police on Monday detained Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and a host of other INDIA bloc leaders as the police foiled their march to Election Commmission to protest over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar and allegations of "vote chori" (vote theft) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi told reporters while being detained, "The reality is that they cannot talk. The truth is in front of the country. This fight is not political. This fight is to save the Constitution. This fight is for One Man, One Vote. We want a clean, pure voters list." Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra told ANI, "Dare hue hai. Sarkaar kaayar hai" (They are scared. The Government is a coward). The other leaders who were detained were Shive Sena Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, and TMC MP Sagarika Ghose. The detained MPs were coralled into a bus to be taken to the Parliament Street police station. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was seen jumping over barricades as Delhi Police stopped the INDIA bloc MPs from marching to the Election Commission's office The Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister could be seen climbing over the barricades, installed by the police to block the protesting MPs. Akhilesh Yadav jumped to the other side to continue the protest. "They are using the police to stop us," Akhilesh Yadav shouted after crossing the barricades. "We are protesting peacefully. We consider Mahatma Gandhi as our ideal..." Supriya Sule said. Senior INDIA bloc leaders- Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, NCP SCP chief Sharad Pawar also joined the protest. The protest march began from the Makar Dwar of the Parliament under the leadership of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The MPs began their march to urge the EC to address their concerns on the alleged "voter theft" The MPs were raising slogans of "vote chor" as they marched towards the office of the poll body at Nirvachan Sadan, before being halted by Police. The Delhi Police said that the MPs did not take permission for the march. BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has accused the Congress of misleading the public. "The country can see if there is anyone who is working against the Constitution, it is led by Rahul Gandhi. SIR is not happening for the first time in the country. Congress lies about EVMs, raises the issue of Maharashtra elections, Haryana elections and creates a mountain of lies. It is their well-thought-out strategy to create a state of anarchy I appeal to the Opposition and the Congress party to raise all issues in discussion on Operation Sindoor in Parliament, the Opposition and Congress had no agenda.

P Chidambaram Backs 'Vote Theft' Charge, Slams Poll Body: 'Acting Like BJP Spokesperson'

The controversy erupted after Rahul Gandhi accused the ECI of facilitating electoral fraud to benefit the BJP Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday amplified Rahul Gandhi's allegations of large-scale voter list manipulation, urging the Election Commission to conduct a thorough probe into alleged electoral malpractices in Karnataka and other states. Around 300 MPs from the INDIA bloc marched towards the Election Commission headquarters in Delhi, accusing the poll body of 'vote chori" (vote theft) and colluding with the BJP to influence electoral outcomes. This was among the first major joint protests by the opposition bloc outside Parliament since last year's Lok Sabha election results. 'When this is a big issue in India and one by one other constituencies are being identified where there's a surge in votes, Bengaluru Central is a classic example. What happened in Mahadevapura should be enquired into," Chidambaram told CNN-News18. He stressed that the 'multiple prima facie pieces of evidence" presented by Rahul Gandhi must be formally examined. 'To take an oath and file an affidavit—EC is not a court of law. The ECI is bound to consider the evidence Rahul Gandhi has presented and probe it," Chidambaram remarked, further alleging that 'the ECI is more of a spokesperson of the BJP. Why is the BJP speaking for the ECI? They can speak for themselves." Presenting data from Karnataka's Mahadevapura assembly segment in Bengaluru Central, Gandhi alleged 'bhayankar chori" (massive theft) of votes. According to him, Congress's internal review found that out of 6.5 lakh votes in the constituency, more than one lakh were fraudulent. The breakdown included 11,965 duplicate voters, 40,009 with fake or invalid addresses, 10,452 'bulk voters" registered under the same address, and 4,132 with invalid photographs. Gandhi also claimed 33,692 voters had misused Form 6 meant for new registrations. Chidambaram's remarks are expected to intensify the political confrontation between the opposition bloc and the ruling BJP, while putting fresh pressure on the ECI to respond to allegations of electoral malpractice. view comments First Published: August 11, 2025, 14:18 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
