2025 Washington State Football Predictions: Cougars Ranked 86th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 Washington State Football Predictions: Cougars Ranked 86th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 8:52 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Washington State lands in my Ultimate 136. Washington State ranking: 86 Last year's ranking: 93 Top player: OL Brock Dieu: Has started 18 games in the last two seasons; in 2024, played in 508 blocking snaps and allowed just seven pressures with no sacks. [Washington State's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: Jimmy Rogers is in Year 1 at Washington State after spending the past 12 years at South Dakota State, with the last two years as head coach. Out is the playmaking point guard at quarterback, John Mateer, and Cam Ward before him. In is 2023 FCS national championship coach Jimmy Rogers, who got the call-up to the majors after posting an 11-3 record last season as South Dakota State's head coach. ADVERTISEMENT Look to running backs Angel Johnson and Kirby Vorhees to see how good the Cougars can be. Johnson averaged more than 7 yards per carry on 91 rushes for 646 yards, while Vorhees went for 581 on 75 rushes. There are 1,500 yards in that tandem and at least one 1,000-yard back, even with them taking the step up to The Show. But the unit anchoring the program will be Jesse Bobbit's Jackackrabbits defense, which gave up just fewer than 12.5 points a game last season. And he brought a wrecking ball with him from Brookings, South Dakota in linebacker Caleb Francl, who collected 64 tackles and 7 tackles for loss last year. 2025 BYU Football Predictions: Cougars Ranked 60th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 BYU Football Predictions: Cougars Ranked 60th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 8:44 p.m. Here is a look at where BYU lands in my Ultimate 136. BYU ranking: 60 Last year's ranking: 48 Top player: RB LJ Martin: Finished fifth in the Big 12 in pass yards with 3,071 and second in pass TDs with 28; one of 21 players in FBS to throw for 3,000+ yards and 25+ pass TDs last season. [BYU's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: 2025 was supposed to be The Jake Retzlaff Show in Provo. He led the Cougars to their first 11-win season since 2009 and the program peaked at No. 6 in the CFP rankings with wins against SMU and Colorado, while he threw for 2,947 yards with 26 total TDs and 12 INTs. ADVERTISEMENT A civil suit accusing him of rape (that was later dismissed) and a violation of the university's honor code left Retzlaff taking the option to leave BYU. Now, Kalani Sitake has to remind his team and the country that the loss of your star player doesn't mean the team will suffer. Like you, I'll believe it when I see it. The defense finished first in the Big 12 in scoring (19.6 points per game), forced turnovers (29) and yards allowed per game (308). That's the strength of this team in 2025, too. But none of BYU's QBs have thrown for more than 1,400 yards — in their career. That means LJ Martin is going to get a lot of touches early with a chance to become a 1,000-yard rusher. 2025 Houston Football Predictions: Cougars Ranked 31st in RJ Young's Ultimate 136
College Football 2025 Houston Football Predictions: Cougars Ranked 31st in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 8:46 p.m. Here is a look at where Houston lands in my Ultimate 136. Houston Cougars ranking: 31 Last year's ranking: 76 Top player: QB Conner Weigman: Started 13 games for Texas A&M was one of five QBs with an 80% completion rate vs AP top 10 teams last season (min. 20 attempts); had 8 pass TDs and no interceptions as a true freshman in 2022, becoming one of 12 FBS players since 1956 wit 8+ passing TDs and no interceptions in a single season. [Houston's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: Willie Fritz's Cougars came on strong at the end of the season and that showed up in their numbers. Despite a 4-8 finish, 2-7 in conference, Houston finished fourth in total defense and second in scoring in the league. ADVERTISEMENT And there's reason to believe Fritz can't flip the Cougars into a 10-win team. After a 2-10 season at Tulane in 2021, the Green Wave finished 12-2 with a win against USC in the Cotton Bowl. At QB, he's helped with the addition of Connor Weigman, who has completed 60% of his passes for 2,964 yards with 19 TDs and seven INTs in 15 games. But he's a former 5-star and has the tools to be one of the best QBs in the country this year.
