PREVIOUSLY (March 13): Awards season might be over, but a number of A-list stars are ready to keep the celebrations going on Saturday (March 15) at the 2025 Truth Awards.
On Thursday (March 13), the show's organizers Better Brothers Los Angeles and The DIVA Foundation announced the official slate of performers and presenters for the annual awards ceremony celebrating Black LGBTQ+ creatives, including NLE Choppa, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Coleman Domingo, Ava DuVernay and Tamar Braxton.
While most of the newly announced attendees will serve as presenters and special guests at the ceremony, Choppa will offer his debut performance during the ceremony. 'True progress requires us all to lean into discomfort and emerge stronger,' BBLA co-founder Scott V. Hamilton said in a statement. 'The presence of allies like NLE Choppa underscores that our stories resonate beyond boundaries.'
This won't be the rapper's first time celebrating the LGBTQ+ community during his career: When he thanked the community in 2024 for their support of his song 'Slut Me Out 2,' Choppa made his position on acceptance clear in a post to X. 'IDC what's normalized as a rapper, I was raised to F— with who f— with you! So thank y'all for appreciating my craft,' he wrote. 'My music For ALL we do NO Discrimination.'
The new slate of stars will join in celebrating the evening's honorees, including filmmaker Lee Daniels, who is set to receive the event's lifetime achievement award. 'Visibility transforms lives; it disrupts outdated scripts and writes new ones where love conquers fear,' Ralph, who also serves as founder of the Diva Foundation, said in a statement about the Truth Awards. 'This celebration serves as a mirror reflecting our truth and a window into what lies ahead.'
The 2025 Truth Awards will take place Saturday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Tickets for the event are currently available at the Truth Awards' website.

Survivor of vicsious downtown L.A. machete attack speaks out
A trained and dedicated chef in Los Angeles who survived a gruesome and violent attack by a machete-wielding suspect, who had just killed another victim, is speaking out about the terrifying ordeal. The violence unfolded in the early morning hours of June 1, with the Los Angeles Police Department responding to reports of an attack near11th Street and South Grand Avenue downtown. At that scene, police located a victim suffering severe injuries from the attack. Only described as man in his 60's, the victim was rushed to the hospital where he later died. While detectives were on the scene investigating, reports of another machete attack, in the area of Broadway Street and Olympic Boulevard, came in. Police rushed to the second location and a man now identified as Kyle Levitt. Levitt told KTLA's Rick Chambers that he had been walking home from his job at a restaurant and was in the process of unlocking the building doors to his downtown L.A. apartment building when the attacker struck. 'By the time I looked up and saw the reflection in the door, I noticed a man running up behind me,' he explained. 'I put my arms up to say stop and that's when he hit me again.' Levitt sustained multiple serious injuries to his head, requiring staples, a blow to his right wrist that nearly severed his hand. 'My tendons were cut completely down to the bone. My artery was cut, and he was over me at this point and that is the first time that I'd seen that he had the knife in his hand,' he said. HIs attacker never spoke to him but had what Levitt described as 'crazy eyes,' making him think the man was going to swing the machete at him again. Teenage boy, 15, killed, 5 others hurt in parking lot crash at L.A. school 'For whatever reason, he didn't,' he said. 'He sort of stopped in that moment and registered, for whatever reason, that it was over and he ran away.' Someone inside the apartment building heard Levitt's banging on the door and came to his aid. He was rushed to the hospital where he has since undergone numerous surgeries to reconnect his tendons and save his hand. He didn't learn until later that just minutes before, less than a mile away, another man had been fatally attacked by the suspect. 'It was just this set of circumstances in which I was the lucky one,' Levitt said. During an intensive downtown manhunt for the suspect, police located and arrested him. They also recovered the machete believed to be used in the two attacks. So far, authorities have not released the identities of the suspect or the victim who was killed. A GoFundMe has been organized to help support Levitt for the estimated monthslong recovery and physical therapy leaving him unable to work. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Watch: Sea lion pups return to wild in Venice Beach
Animal advocates gathered in Venice Beach on Wednesday to celebrate the release of four sea lion pups back into the wild. Upon their release, the young marine mammals made their way toward freedom cautiously at first, though they quickly spotted the ocean and made their way into the Pacific waves. A Marine Mammal Care Center volunteer named Kayla told KTLA's Erin Myers that two of the youngsters had sustained shark bites, while the other two were 'malnourished and super skinny.' 'It's really nice seeing them get their weight back, and [one of the pups named] Spiderling especially had a really deep wound, so seeing her recover is really good,' Kayla said. These four pups came to the center amid a crisis in Southern California's ocean waters, as many sea creatures had been sickened by domoic acid, which is produced by algae blooms. Kayla noted that they typically get about 2,000 calls for service each year, but due to this recent bloom, they've received 4,000 already this year. That bloom began in February, and though the San Pedro-based MMCC said the danger has largely passed as of last month, algae blooms are expected to return, especially as climate change makes the oceans more acidic, conditions under which algae thrive. The MMCC has partnered with L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath to better prepare for the next algae bloom. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Illegal fireworks negatively affecting Carson residents: ‘I think it's not going to stop'
Warning: The video above contains flashing lights. Viewer discretion is advised. The city of Carson earlier this year made the use, sale and discharge of fireworks illegal within the community, but the new policy doesn't seem to be stopping people from putting on their own fireworks shows. The ordinance, passed by the city council in March, makes it so that the public display of fireworks must be put on by a pyrotechnic operator with a permit. That includes sparklers, smoke bombs and fireworks designated as 'safe and sane.' Those who are not in possession of the permit could face fines and possibly a misdemeanor conviction; the fines are $2,000 for the first violation, $3,000 for the second violation (within a year of the first violation) and $5,000 for each additional violation after that. All fines are increased by 10% if not paid or appealed within 15 days of the issuance of date. Any unpaid fines will accrue 10% interest each year. Mural depicting Kobe and Gigi Bryant in Los Angeles vandalized again Those penalties, part of the 'You Light It, We Cite It' campaign, are not appearing to stop some residents from lighting off fireworks. Video recently taken by local residents and shared with KTLA shows an elaborate fireworks display over the neighborhood. According to one woman, the fireworks are 'disturbing.' '[The fireworks have] been very loud…they shake the house and they wake and scare the kids,' one resident, Lia Flores, said. 'Hearing them cry and then not be able to get back to bed is a problem. We have been here for five years now, and we have experienced this multiple times.' Area residents told KTLA that they believe local businesses are renting out space in warehouse parking lots for groups of people to light off the fireworks. Those businesses don't have any issues paying the fines, residents say. And while city officials say the increased penalties were put into place to protect people and animals who could be traumatized by the loud explosions, neighbors say there just isn't enough enforcement. Girl, 4, allowed to stay in U.S. for lifesaving care after deportation controversy 'It can last for 10 minutes or up to half an hour,' said Joanne, another Carson resident. 'I ask my husband to call 911 because I think it's not going to stop.' 'It's not right, especially at night,' she continued. 'The city needs to do something about it.' Carson residents are reminded that they can anonymously report firework activity to the city's public safety department; however, with the Fourth of July a month away, the complaints may continue to pile up as the night sky lights up due to the illegal fireworks displays.
