‘Country first, party later' for Congress but ‘Modi first, country later' for some: Kharge's swipe at Tharoor
In a jibe at Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, party chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday (June 25, 2025) said his party believes in "country first" mantra but for some it is "Modi first and country later".
'I can't read English well. His (Mr. Tharoor's) language is very good, that's why we have made him a Congress Working Committee member,' Mr. Kharge said when asked about Mr. Tharoor's article on Operation Sindoor outreach in which he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
'But I want to say the people of the opposition together said they are with the Army that is fighting (during Operation Sindoor). We (the Congress) said the country is biggest and we will work together (with the government). We said 'country first, party later'. Some people say 'Modi first, country later'. What can we do in that,' he said.
COMMENT | Lessons from Operation Sindoor's global outreach
Soon after Mr. Kharge's remarks, Mr. Tharoor put out a cryptic post on X in which there was an image of a bird with the caption — 'Don't ask permission to fly. The wings are yours. And the sky belongs to no one...'
Mr. Tharoor, in an article published in The Hindu on Monday (June 23, 2025), said Mr. Modi's energy, dynamism and willingness to engage remained a 'prime asset' for India on the global stage but deserved greater backing.
His remarks were seen as likely to irk his Congress party and widen cracks in his ties with its leadership.
In the article, Mr. Tharoor said the diplomatic outreach following Operation Sindoor was a moment of national resolve and effective communication.
The Prime Minister's Office had shared Mr. Tharoor's article on X.
Speaking at an event in Moscow, Mr. Tharoor on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) said his article on Operation Sindoor's global outreach was not a sign of his "leaping to join" Prime Minister Modi's party but a statement of national unity, interest and standing up for India.
Also on Tuesday (June 24, 2025), the Congress distanced itself from party MP Tharoor's remarks in the article.
Asked about Mr. Tharoor's comments in the article, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate had said, "It may be his own opinion, it is not the opinion of the Congress party. It is not the Congress' view since we have presented our views with evidence and proof."
Mr. Tharoor's praise for the Prime Minister comes at a time when the Congress has been consistently attacking the Modi government over its foreign policy, alleging that Indian diplomacy is being "shattered" and the country stands "isolated" globally.
Following the Pahalgam terror attack, Mr. Tharoor has been making comments on the India-Pakistan conflict and the diplomatic outreach that are at variance with the stand of the Congress.
The Congress has been questioning the government over U.S. President Donald Trump's claims of mediating a ceasefire between the two countries.
Mr. Tharoor has often drawn criticism from his party and jibes aimed at him by Congress leaders for his stand.

Telangana ACB summons IAS officer over Formula E case
Hyderabad, June 25 (UNI) Telangana's Anti-Corruption Bureau has asked special chief secretary Arvind Kumar to appear before it on July 1 in connection with the financial irregularities in the Formula E race during the BRS regime. This comes days after the former minister and BRS working president KT Rama Rao was interrogated by the ACB for almost eight hours on June 16. Kumar had appeared before the ACB in January this year. Senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar has once again been summoned by the ACB in connection with the alleged irregularities over the transfer of Rs 54 crore from the state exchequer to the Formula E race. Kumar was the secretary of the municipal affairs and urban development (MAUD) department with KT Rama Rao as the minister when the fund transfer happened. He is currently in charge of state's disaster management department where he was shunted after the Congress government assumed office. The IAS officer has been designated as accused number 2 in the Formula E case, followed by the then HMDA's chief engineer, BLN Reddy, who is accused number 3. The ACB has accused KT Rama Rao of committing irregularities in the Formula E case, directly transferring funds to the organisers when the official sponsors backed out. Rao maintained that procedures were jumped because it was election time and he had done it to save the image of the state. He also said that the transferred sum was still lying in the account of the Formula E organisers but the Congress government has so far not made any attempt to retrieve the funds. The BRS government wanted the Formula E race to be held in 2024 after its success in 2023 but the event was cancelled by the Congress government after it came to power, citing huge costs. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also taken up the case. UNI XC RN
