CM, Nawaz chair consultative meeting on budget
LAHORE: A high-level consultative meeting was chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif along with PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif on the budget preparation for the upcoming fiscal year at the Chief Minister's House on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb along with secretaries of various departments comprising Health, Education, Local Government, Housing, Agriculture, Transport, and Communication & Works (C&W).
During the meeting, development projects worth Rs 2,000 billion were presented by various departments. However, the proposed framework for Punjab's development budget was outlined between Rs 1,100 and Rs 1,200
billion.
During the briefing it was agreed that the departmental recommendations and schemes should be rationalized to reduce the total uplift budget between Rs 1,000 to Rs1,100 billion. It was claimed that a record Rs 724 billion had been utilized on development projects during the current single fiscal year.

Sentence suspension in £190m case: IHC grants 7-day to NAB for appointing special prosecutor in IK, Bushra's pleas
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted seven days to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for appointing special prosecutor in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi's appeals seeking suspension of their sentence in £190 million case. A two-member bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif, on Thursday, heard the case and adjourned the hearing until June 11, when the NAB told the court that it needed time to prepare arguments for the case. During the hearing, Barrister Salman Safdar, representing the Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi argued that the petitions for suspension of the sentence were heard, after much prayers and supplications, adding that today's date has not been given easily. NAB Prosecutor Rafay Maqsood appeared before the court and said that his request is that the federal government had to appoint a special prosecutor in this case but he has not been appointed yet. Rafay prayed the court to grant four week, stating that they had received the notice yesterday. The acting chief justice said for issuing notification for the prosecution team seven days are enough. Salman Safdar contended that more than 300 cases have been filed against the founder of PTI and the trial court sentenced him. Lawyer Latif Khosa said 'the PTI founder is in jail without any evidence; the PTI founder neither will go abroad nor is there any risk of tampering with the record.' The court directed the NAB prosecution team to notify the special prosecutor within seven days and adjourned the hearing until June 11. In this matter, founder PTI Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi approached the IHC seeking suspension of their sentences in the £190 million case. They moved the court through their counsel Barrister Salman Safdar and cited the state and the chairman NAB as respondents. Counsel Salman stated in petition that the petitioners were convicted by the Accountability Court (I) Islamabad through judgment dated 17.01.2025, wherein, they were held guilty for commission of offence of corruption and corrupt practices as defined u/s 9(a)(ii)(iv)(vi) of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 and Imran was sentenced u/s 10(a) of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 14 years and fine amounting to Rs1,000,000. Through the instant petition, they sought indulgence of this court for 'Suspension' of conviction and sentence awarded to them, till the final disposal of the main appeal already filed in the IHC. Punjab takes unprecedented steps for environmental improvement: CM
LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the Punjab's first climate policy, Climate Resilient Punjab Vision and Action Plan, has been implemented. A special environmental endowment fund worth Rs 15 billion has been established for environment-friendly startups and businesses. The Punjab province has attained the honour of establishing Pakistan's first Environmental Protection Force (EPF) for environmental protection. The chief minister in her message on World Environment Day, said that Punjab's environmental commitment has entirely changed in a span of one year. Punjab has taken unprecedented steps for environmental improvement in one year. A plastic management cell has been established for environmental protection, which is ensuring a complete ban on single-use plastic. She revealed that for the first time in Punjab, online registration of plastic manufacturers and sellers has been started. For the first time, Emission Testing Certification of vehicles according to international standards has been launched to combat smog hazards. Millions of vehicles have been registered under Emission Testing Certification in Punjab, she said. She apprised that 50 air quality monitoring stations have been installed across the province to monitor the environmental situation. She highlighted that thousands of youths are actively working in cities and villages under the Climate Leadership and Development Internship Program to create awareness among the public about the elimination of environmental pollution. She disclosed that a GIS squad has been established to ensure environmental protection with the help of artificial intelligence. The CM outlined, 'Four fuel testing labs have been established to check the quality of petrol to prevent smog. Sprinkler systems are being installed on buildings under construction to prevent dust. For the first time, 15 water quality monitoring stations are being established to check the quality of water on rivers and rain water drains. Environmental benefits are being achieved through tree plantation, recycling and e-bikes through the Chief Minister Green Credit Programme.' She emphasised, 'The first 'Strategic Cell' has been established in the Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change to create environmental awareness and consciousness among the public. EPA has declared Punjab as the first ESO certified agency in Pakistan owning to successful measures being taken for environmental protection. The first dedicated Helpline '1317' has been established for public feedback regarding environmental protection. To prevent smog, emission control systems are being installed in more than 2000 industrial units and e-mapping of all units is being carried out. For the first time in Punjab, all brick kilns have been shifted to zigzag technology.' She highlighted, 'In order to convert the environmental pledge into practical action, environmental divisional offices have been established in five divisions and four new divisional offices are being established. For the first time in Punjab, environmental social safeguard training is being organized in the government departments. A 'Green Punjab app' has also been established for the convenience of the public. The electric bus service has been launched in Lahore, 1100 more electric buses will be provided in all divisions. KSE-100 retreats on budget jitters, taxes
Listen to article The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed a volatile session on Thursday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index retreating after hitting record highs a day earlier. Investor sentiment turned cautious due to concerns about stringent conditions linked to a new International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, including proposed enforcement of agriculture income tax and the IMF's opposition to provincial energy subsidies. Adding to the bearish outlook were fears of aggressive fiscal measures in the upcoming FY26 federal budget. These include possible new taxes on banking and savings income, along with anticipated hikes in petroleum levies on petrol and diesel. A weakening rupee and a 10% year-on-year (YoY) decline in exports for May also dampened investor confidence. Arif Habib Corporation Managing Director Ahsan Mehanti commented that the market declined following reports of IMF pressure for strict enforcement of agriculture taxation and improved tax collection mechanisms, while resisting provincial subsidies on power. "Expectations of higher taxes on banking and savings, increased petroleum levies, rupee instability, and a sharp YoY decline in exports all weighed on sentiment," he said. The KSE-100 index closed at 121,641 points, down 157.87 points or 0.13% from the previous day. Despite the decline, the market remained within a broad range throughout the session, with an intra-day high of +483 points and a low of -281 points, according to Topline Securities. The firm noted that the range-bound activity came ahead of the long Eid holidays, following a recent rally. Topline also highlighted the most traded companies by value, with Unity Foods leading at Rs1.67 billion, followed by Engro Holdings (Rs1.24 billion), K-Electric (Rs1.03 billion), Searle Company (Rs847 million), and TRG Pakistan (Rs785 million). Arif Habib Limited (AHL) noted that despite the minor setback, the week had remained positive overall, with the market touching all-time highs. Engro Holdings (+3.24%), Pakgen Power (+10.0%), and Service Industries (+5.49%) contributed to the index's gains. On the downside, Meezan Bank (-2.11%), Systems Ltd (-1.68%), and Fauji Fertilizer (-0.5%) were key laggards. In broader developments, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia on June 5-6 to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for talks on bilateral cooperation, regional security, and economic collaboration. Meanwhile, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) stated in a corporate briefing that its capital expenditure (capex) is expected to hover around Rs30 billion annually over the coming years. Analysts projected 120,000 points to act as a post-Eid base level for the KSE-100, with potential to move higher provided macroeconomic stability continues. KTrade Securities echoed similar views in its market wrap, observing that despite the volatility, trading activity remained strong with volume reaching 854 million shares. Leading the volume chart were K-Electric (179 million shares), Unity Foods (62 million), and WorldCall Telecom (52 million). However, slight profit-taking was noted in banking, cement, and oil and gas sectors. KTrade added that investors are expected to stay cautious in the lead-up to the federal budget announcement on June 10, 2025. JS Global analyst Mubashir Anis Naviwala reported that the index had opened positively and surged to a new intra-day high of 122,281, but profit-taking dragged it down by the close. Notable trading activity was seen in oil & gas, fertiliser, power, and banking sectors. A total of 478 companies' shares were traded. Among them, 217 closed higher, 208 declined, and 53 remained unchanged. K-Electric was the volume leader, gaining Rs0.42 to close at Rs5.83. It was followed by Unity Foods, which rose Rs0.75 to close at Rs26.89, and WorldCall Telecom, which added Rs0.05 to close at Rs1.42. Foreign investors sold shares worth Rs271.6 million, according to the National Clearing Company.
