'Would put Fort Knox to shame': Here's the measures being taken to ensure the conclave's secrecy

The Journal07-05-2025

AT THE HOLY Mass this morning in St Peter's Basilica to prepare cardinals for the conclave, the Dean of the College of Cardinals urged the electors to set aside 'personal considerations' and only keep in mind the 'good of the Church'.
But not only do cardinals have to set aside their personal considerations, but also their personal belongings.
Yesterday, cardinals had to give up their phones, tablets, laptops, and radios.
These devices were confiscated and placed into sealed bags labelled with each cardinal's name – the devices will be returned once conclave concludes.
Meanwhile, it's deemed that closed doors are not enough to maintain secrecy, nor is the oath of secrecy that cardinals must take.
The floor of the Sistine Chapel where the conclave takes place has been altered to prevent trip hazards, but there are also reports that signal jammers are placed under the temporary floor to prevent electronic surveillance.

Italian media also reported
that phone signal in the Vatican will be cut off at 3pm Rome time, an hour and a half before the cardinals are scheduled to proceed to the Sistine Chapel to begin the conclave.
While cardinals won't have access to their phones, they are not the only people involved in the conclave.
Around 70 to 80 people will help to ensure the conclave runs smoothly, from doctors and nurses to servers and cooks.
They are in full-time service during the conclave and stay overnight in the Vatican, without contact to their family and the outside world.

But while these 80 or so people will lack phone signal, a Vatican spokesperson said the signal deactivation will not affect
St. Peter's Square, where the public will gather during the conclave.
And while the Sistine Chapel is out of bounds to the public during the conclave, the rest of St Peter's Basilica remains open as usual.
The 80 or so people who help run the conclave must swear an oath of secrecy, which they undertook yesterday.
Officials and staff involved in the upcoming Conclave have taken an oath of secrecy.
The oath, administered by Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, was taken by all individuals—both clergy and laity— who will be present for the conclave.

Everyone, both clergy and laypeople, are subject to excommunication if they violate the conclave's secrecy.
Such secrecy and security measures have a long history within the Church.
Indeed, the term conclave comes from the Latin 'cum clave', which literally means 'with key' – it's meant to evoke the image of cardinals being locked away 'with key' until there is a new pope.
Meanwhile, Vatican journalists have quipped that the security operation around the conclave would put Fort Knox to shame.
'Even the windows will be sealed, including the shutters, so no one can so much as glance outside,'
one Vatican source told the Jesuit magazine America
.
The Santa Martha where cardinals will be staying is a hotel-like guest house built during Pope John Paul II's reign – it's primary purpose is to house cardinals during conclaves, though Pope Francis decided to live there rather than the apostolic palace.
According to Vatican sources, each room had to be inspected, secured and sealed before cardinals could move in for the conclave.
These seals are broken once the cardinal-elector arrives, under the watchful eye of the Swiss Guard.

Meanwhile, this conclave will be the largest in history with 133 cardinal electors – only cardinals aged 80 or under when a pope dies or resigns has a vote.
This means there isn't room at the inn for five cardinals and
Irish-born Camerlengo Kevin Farrell
had to draw lots to see who would reside at the old guesthouse.
Cardinals can travel from Santa Marta to the Sistine Chapel '
as they wish, even on foot', according to a Vatican spokesperson, but it must follow a 'protected route
'.

A small team of two Italian cooks and a female chef from Africa will keep the cardinals fed, and while some of them may be accustomed to the finer things, the Vatican source said the food will be high quality but not 'luxurious'.
This promises to be better than the food served during the conclave in 1268 which lasted close to three years.
This conclave was held in the small town of Viterbo, north of Rome, after a temporary relocation of the papal see and the townspeople had to pay for the cardinals' room and board expenses.
Taxes had to be raised to finance the conclave and as impatience grew, drastic action ramped up to bring the conclave to a conclusion.
The roof was removed from the election hall and the diet for cardinals was reduced to bread and water.
It took 1,006 days to elect Pope Gregory X and along the way, three of the 20 cardinals involved died.

Beyond bland: Try these five Italian whites with Pinot Grigio's universal appeal

The benefit of bland, of course, is that it's only offensive to people who really want their wines to taste of something beyond 'crisp easy drinking'. The truth is that much of the time, most wine drinkers are more focused on getting the goss from their fellow drinkers or enjoying the food that they're sharing together — and fair enough. Not all Pinot Grigio is bland, of course, but even the better-made ones with a bit more character are unlikely to be divisive in the way that, say, pungent New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or racy German Riesling or buttery oaked Aussie Chardonnay can be. When you're pleasing a crowd, Pinot Grigio has understandable appeal. However, so do many other Italian varietal white wines, such as the Fiano (see below) featured in Lidl's current promotion, which runs until June 15. Other highlights include Lidl's Langhe DOC Nebbiolo 2022 (€10.99) with its raspberry balsamic character, and clean summery Mithus Vigneti del Vulture Basilicata Rosato 2023 (€12.99). Fiano is an ancient grape variety native to Campania in southern Italy but also grown in neighbouring Puglia, as here. It tends to produce whites with some richness and generous aromas, depending on where and how it's grown, as does the not dissimilar if zestier Falanghina. Italian wines are often a blend of several grapes and so don't always namecheck their grape varieties, but there are many single varietal styles worth trying. These include Carricante and Grillo from Sicily; Verdicchio from Le Marche on the Adriatic coast (due north of Rome); Pecorino from Le Marche and its southern neighbour Abruzzo; Friulano or Ribolla Gialla from Friuli north-east of Venice; and Vermentino from Liguria and Piemonte in the northwest and the islands of Sardinia and Corsica. These are just some of the white wine grapes that produce charming wines across Italy's vast and diverse wine regions. If you're buying any without a recommendation or prior knowledge of that particular wine, its producer and where and how it was grown, the most offensive thing about them is likely that they might be a little light and bland — just as cheap and cheerful Pinot Grigio can be — but they are always worth a spin. Wine of the week I Clivi Friulano San Pietro 2023, Fruili Colli Orientali, Italy, 13pc, €24.50 The grape here is Friulano, a somewhat lesser-spotted varietal from north-east Italy which has been mistaken for Sauvignon Blanc but leans more to refreshing citrus, herb and apple than pungent gooseberries or white currants. This very pretty expression grown on sunny slopes (clivi means 'slopes') evokes fragrant dried apple crisps and fresh almonds or beechnuts. For a more savoury white wine, try the Ribolla Gialla A Tessa, or for a pale smoky red, the Schioppettino (aka Ribolla Nera). Selected independents, including 64 Wine, Pinto Wines; Masseria Metrano Fiano Salento IGT 2023, 12.5pc, €11.99 Aromatic with notes of white flowers and wild herbs, pears and white peaches, with a subtle nuttiness leading to a relatively weighty texture with medium-low acidity but lifted by some refreshing salinity and citrus-peel pithiness on the finish. Pair with caprese or vegetable-based salads. Lidl ADVERTISEMENT Learn more Cantine Belisario Terre di Valbona Verdicchio di Matelica DOC, Marche, Italy, 12.5pc, €17.99 There is a distinctive stony minerality here but also spicy floral aromatics, both due to the higher altitude and more continental climate of the Matelica DOC, further inland then the Marche's better-known Castelli di Jesi DOC. Selected independents including Bradley's, Cork, Cantina Frentana Pecorino Terre di Chieti 2024, Abruzzo, Italy, 12pc, €18.20 Some nice concentration of fruit with fleshy white peach and subtle floral notes lending a slightly exotic character, with a textural quality and pleasant citrus freshness. A versatile food wine that will pair nicely with vegetable-based dishes, fish and white meats. Quintessential Wines, Drogheda Azienda Agricola La Jara Pinot Grigio, Veneto, Italy, 12.5pc, €16 Delicate yellow fruit aromas lead to a light and pretty mid-palate and clean crisp finish. A lovely example of an organic Pinot Grigio with charm — and watch out too for the semi-sparkling Prosecco Frizzante at a similar price and also in picnic-friendly half bottles (€9.99, Selected independents including Martins,

Taste of Italy: These delicious pizzas are the perfect freezer fillers this summer

Summer and pizza go well together, what with lazy days, smaller appetites, and a reluctance to cook when the sun is shining. A few pizzas in the freezer are ideal for those days when a sandwich seems insufficient, yet the same combination of ingredients hot out of the oven is a satisfying treat. For this week's top 8, we kept an eye out for old favourites along with new flavour combinations. We also spotted pizza dough in freezer compartments, for those who want to choose their own toppings. Even better, if the weather isn't so good, amuse the children by making pizza dough from scratch, and save a few euros. Use 500g strong flour, ½ teaspoon dried yeast, 1 teaspoon salt and 300ml warm water to make a dough by hand or in a blender or mixer. Mix until well combined. A dough hook in the mixer will knead it for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes spongy. Tip onto a floured surface and, if making it by hand, knead with the heel of your hand until it feels bouncy – this can take 15 minutes, depending on the weather. Set aside for a few hours in a covered, oiled bowl until doubled in size. Flatten out and top with your favourites, topping with basil leaves after cooking. For a quicker result, though a little heavier, scone dough, rolled thinly, also works. Slice of Life healthy pizza cauliflower pepperoni 349g €5 Slice of Life Pizza. A light thin base of white and wholemeal flours has puréed cauliflower and carrot, which lighten the texture and add to the flavour of a tasty crust. The topping has a natural, flavoursome sauce made from tomatoes, salt, sunflower oil, herbs and garlic, finished with a generous amount of mozzarella. This topping comes with finely sliced and mildly spiced pepperoni. Produced in Dublin, we bought it in Lidl Ballincollig. Score: 9.5 Saturday Pizzas margherita 400g €4.99 Saturday Pizzas, Margherita Pizza. Picture: David Creedon Good, natural pizza base of just flour, water, salt and yeast makes for a flavourful crust and a light base. The topping of simple tomato sauce made from tomatoes, salt, a little sugar and pepper is nicely balanced and topped with olive oil and fresh basil leaves. A hit with all tasters. Produced in Cork. Score: 10 M&S Food woodfired roasted vegetables 440g €7 Woodfired Italian Ham & Mascarpone Pizza. - Picture: David Creedon Good, thin, pizza base here made from basic ingredients - flour with malted flour, yeast, water and salt. The topping has decent chunks of juicy peppers, courgettes, and tomatoes drizzled with olive oil and herbs. Enjoyed by all. Score: 9 Dunnes Stores gluten-free mozzarella & tomato pizza 300g €3.49 Dunnes Stores Gluten Free, Mozzarella & Tomato Pizza. - Picture: David Creedon Expecting the dry taste of some gluten-free products, tasters were pleasantly surprised by the taste and light texture of this pizza. The crust is made with rice flour, cornflour, pea flour, flaxseed, and various starches. The tomato sauce is quite rich, the mozzarella is generous, and it's seasoned with oregano. Made in Italy. Score: 8.75 Dr Oetker Suprema cinque formaggi 424g €5.99 Dr. Oetker, Suprema CinQue Formaggi.- Picture: David Creedon Tasters liked this balance of a crunchy base, which was not too thick, topped with rich tomato purée and the five cheeses mentioned in the Italian title – mozzarella, smoked white cheddar, provolone, ricotta and blue. The five make for interesting textures – creamy and chunky, dry and stringy. No chemical additives in the base or topping. Made in the EU. Score: 9 Tesco Finest ham, mushroom and mascarpone 430g €5.50 Tesco Finest, Ham, Mushroom & mascarpone Wood Fired Pizza. - Picture: David Creedon Tasters liked the blend of creamy mascarpone cheese with garlic-flavoured mushrooms. The ham was unremarkable but there was plenty of flavour overall with the topping of Parmesan. Score: 8.5 Lidl Deluxe four cheese & semi-dried tomato pizza 430g €3.29 Deluxe Four Cheese & Semi-Dried Tomato, Wood Fired Pizza. - Picture: David Creedon A good blend of cheeses here – smoked provola, emmental, asiago cheeses, as well as unspecified 'hard cheese', topped with tasty buffalo mozzarella pearls. The base made from wheat flour, dried wheat sourdough, malted wheat flour, black pepper and yeast, with maize starch and dextrose, makes a tasty and crisp crust. The sun-dried tomatoes with garlic add a rich flavour to the topping. Made in Italy. Score: 8.25 Goodfella's ham & pineapple stone-baked thin 365g €4.19 Goodfells Ham & Pineapple Pizza. - Picture: David Creedon The pineapple-on-pizza debate will continue as long as people enjoy this combination. Here, it works well with plenty of mozzarella to bring a genuine Italian feel to this pizza. Ham and pepperoni both have preservatives and stabilisers. As an occasional treat, these are fine, but it's best to avoid UPFs in the form of processed meats daily. Irish made.
