Vintage Chicago Tribune: How Chicago became the go-to city for political conventions1860: With a critical push from the Tribune, Abraham Lincoln was nominated for president at the Republican Convention at the Wigwam building (at what is now Wacker Drive and Lake Street) in Chicago.
1971: Montreal Canadiens 3, Chicago Blackhawks 2. After taking a series lead in the Stanley Cup Final, the Hawks were unable to keep pouring it on rookie goaltender Ken Dryden. During Game 7 in Chicago, the Hawks took a 2-0 lead late into the second period, when Bobby Hull sailed a shot off the crossbar that could have put the game out of reach. The dinging of the pipe seemed to awaken the Canadiens, who stormed back to even the score before Henri Richard scored his second goal of the night — and the eventual Cup-winner — 2:34 into the third. Neither the fans at Chicago Stadium nor the Hawks they were watching could recover from the momentum swing.
1994: New York Knicks 87, Chicago Bulls 86. The infamous Hue Hollins game. Hubert Davis sank two free throws with 2.1 seconds left after Hollins whistled Scottie Pippen for a questionable foul. The Game 5 victory helped the Knicks keep home-court advantage in a second-round series they eventually won in seven games, ending the Bulls' first championship run at three titles after an impressive season following Michael Jordan's first retirement.
2012: Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood left the pitching mound at Wrigley Field for the final time — tipping his hat to fans who chanted, 'Kerry! Kerry!' and embracing his son Justin before he headed into the dugout and retirement. Wood, who threw a 20-strikeout game in just his fifth Major League start in 1998, had 446 career appearances — 341 of those were with the Cubs.
Wood faced just one batter — Dayan Viciedo of the Chicago White Sox. Wood struck him out in the eighth inning.

There's no question that Minnesotans eyes were glued to TV screens when Connor McDavid found Leon Draisaitl for the winning goal at exactly 10:44 p.m. CT. Just one problem: Game 1 was played on the first Wednesday of an even month, and 10:44 p.m. is when Minnesota runs emergency alert tests on television. Sign up for our BREAKING WEATHER newsletters At the precise moment that McDavid delivered the pass to Draisaitl, the game was interrupted by the distinctive, screeching tone and the full-screen emergency alert screen. Watch: The test interrupted the live feed from the game with 32.4 seconds left in overtime, and Draisaitl's shot found the back of the net with about 31.9 seconds remaining. A half-second later would've allowed Minnesotans to see the goal. It was like a cross-check to the kidneys for the State of Hockey, which despite eight consecutive first-round playoff exits by the Minnesota Wild, is always plugged into the Stanley Cup Final while dreaming of what it would be like to watch Kirill Kaprizov score an overtime winner in a championship series game. For Minnesotans who didn't get to see the full game-winner, here you go. It was beautiful. Just so you're aware next time, Minnesota conducts emergency alerts on television as part of the Emergency Alert System. The statewide EAS test is deployed on the first Wednesday of each month. Outdoor sirens typically sound at 1 p.m., but the television tests occur at 1:44 p.m. in odd months and 10:44 p.m. in even months. Note: The test doesn't air on streaming services, so Minnesotans who watched the game on YouTube TV or other streaming platforms didn't experience the interruption. Flip watch: Is LSU football on the verge of losing No. 1 ranked wide receiver? LSU football fans are growing concerned about the Tigers' future with five-star wide receiver Tristen Keys. Keys, a five-star receiver in the 2026 recruiting class, committed to LSU earlier this year. But this week, he removed all LSU tags from his social media accounts. However, Keys' commitment post remained the first thing pinned on his Instagram page. LSU always knew holding onto the No. 1 ranked wide receiver in the class would be a battle, but the competition may be stiffer than once thought. Keys is coming off a visit to Miami and has more official visits lined up. Keys will visit Texas A&M this weekend before heading to Auburn next week. On Wednesday, the Mississippi native made an appearance at Ole Miss. LSU's biggest threat may be Miami, where Keys visited last week. Keys also inked an NIL deal with Adidas, who just so happens to have a Miami partnership. If you're reading into things, Keys' recent Miami visit, the Adidas deal, and his social media activity are bad signs for LSU. But there is some positive news. Ahead of Keys' Miami visit, he told On3 that he was "pretty locked in" with LSU. LSU football's 2026 class ranks No. 2 in the country with Keys as the headliner. Also ranking near the top of the class is five-star defensive tackle Richard Anderson. LSU has nine commits with an average rating of 93.22. That average rating ranks No. 1 in the country, per On3. LSU has a chance to finish with the top class in the country, but the Tigers need to hold onto Keys.
