Ohio State defensive tackle enters the transfer portal

USA Today26-01-2025
'Tis the season of transfer portal news for the Ohio State football team. the portal news has been trickling out throughout the run to the College Football Playoff national championship, but players have five days from the end of that run to have their name sucked into the portal.
The latest to place his name in the portal is defensive tackle Hero Kanu.
Out of Santa Margarita, California, after being more or less raised in Germany, Kanu was a part of the 2022 recruiting class as a four-star prospect. He never really broke into a significant rotation, with his most playing time occurring last season with just 123 snaps. He finished the year with 14 tackles and one sack.
Kanu is a redshirt junior, so he'll still have two seasons of eligibility to exhaust as he finds a new home. We will of course be on top of whatever destination he chooses and wish him nothing but the best.
Ohio State defensive lineman Hero Kanu has entered the transfer portal, @chris_hummer and I have learned for @cbssports/@247Sports.
Was a Class of 2022 top-120 overall recruit. Posted 14 tackles the last two years.https://t.co/10Sz3YxlzO pic.twitter.com/Z7vFyusYcC

Ohio State may have won a national title, but now the hard work begins on a bit of an aggressive timeline with trying to figure out the coaching staff and roster for next season. There is, in fact, no offseason.

Ohio State freshman safety adds depths to secondary after losing black stripe

Another ballyhooed Ohio State freshman has lost his black stripe. Safety Faheem Delane was officially welcomed to the Brotherhood on Saturday afternoon. Delane was the No. 8 prospect in the 2025 class at the safety position according to 247Sports. Coming out of Olney, Maryland, he has all the makings of another top-end defender on the back side of the defense. He picked the Buckeyes out of a final three of Ohio State, LSU, and Oregon. 247Sports Director of Scouting, Andrew Irvins, sees great things ahead, calling Delane "An aggressive back-seven defender that can cover the pass, defend the run, and get home on the blitz. Owns a college-ready frame having measured roughly 6-foot-2.5, 200 pounds summer before junior season. Quick to trigger and tends to play with tons of confidence. Has been utilized primarily as a box safety and a slot corner at the prep level and found plenty of success in both roles. Physical more times than not and always looking to deliver a blow. Serviceable in man-to-man situations and held his own at Under Armour's Future annual event, producing a pair of takeaways." The Silver Bullets are loaded at the safety position, but Delane is looking to carve a role early in his freshman campaign. Caleb Downs, who is the best in the country, will most likely be paired with Jaylen McClain or Malik Hartford. However, coaches seem to be impressed with what they see from the true freshman as he pushes for playing time.

WATCH: Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia gets mic'd up at practice

It's a year of a lot of new faces for the Ohio State football team in 2025. Not only did the program lose 15 players to the NFL, but it'll also be ushering in a new offensive and defensive coordinator. On the defensive side of the ball, the guy responsible for the culture there will now be former New England Patriots defensive coordinator and Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia. Most of Buckeye Nation has yet to really get to know Patricia other than a few sound bites and comments made during some of the media opportunities, so there's plenty to still learn. To help you get to know one of the new guys on the block, the Ohio State football creative team mic'd him up so you can get a feel for his personality and how he interacts with the players. He has drawn rave reviews so far this year from the coaching staff and players alike, and maybe you too can see why by watching and listening below. Receiving high praise before the season is one thing, and a great start, but it'll mean nothing if the defense doesn't perform in 2025. Something tells me the Buckeyes will be just fine.

WATCH: Ohio State football captains phone their parents to break the news

The Ohio State football team announced its four captains for the 2025 season, and it is quite the honor because they were chosen by the players themselves. It was no doubt some exciting news, but it didn't stop there. After the news dropped, each of the four players was able to call their parents and break the news before Buckeye Nation found out. The Ohio State creative team shared each of those four phone calls, and it's the type of content that will make you think about the pride you have for your own sons or daughters. Watch as Austin Sierevold, Caleb Downs, Brandon Inniss, and Sonny Styles take turns breaking the news to their parents that they are one of four captains for Ohio State during the 2025 season. If this doesn't make you swell up with pride and have a little tear in your eye, I don't know what planet you are from. These for captains will lead the team out on the field when the season starts on Aug. 30 vs. No. 1 Texas Longhorns.
