NHL Trade Rumors: 2 Teams Interested In Penguins' Bryan Rust

Yahoo4 days ago
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust is one of the NHL's most-talked-about trade candidates right now. With the Penguins retooling their roster, the veteran winger has naturally been the subject of trade speculation.
The Penguins are not in a position where they need to rush a potential move, though, as Rust has a bargain $5.125 million cap hit until the end of the 2027-28 season. However, he also just had a big season, so it is fair to wonder if the Penguins could take advantage of his heightened trade value.

During the latest episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman named the Buffalo Sabres and the Columbus Blue Jackets as two teams that are likely interested in Rust.
"I think there has been a lot of interest in Bryan Rust, and for good reason," Friedman said. "It wouldn't surprise me if Buffalo was one of those teams, too. Don't know if it will happen, but I think there are a lot of teams looking at that guy. I would think Columbus would be another... But someone told me that Buffalo was one of the teams around Rust."
Hearing that the Sabres are reportedly interested in Rust is not surprising in the slightest. After trading JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth, they have a clear hole in their top six, and Rust would undoubtedly fix it. In addition, he would give the Sabres another impactful veteran forward to help mentor their younger players, which is a clear need for them as they look to turn things around.

When looking at Columbus' lineup, it is fair to argue that they could use a player like Rust, too. He would certainly give the Blue Jackets' top six and power play a major boost if acquired. Furthermore, with the Blue Jackets on the rise, bringing in a star like Rust could help them take that next step and get back into the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Penguins are currently retooling their roster. While there certainly is a chance that they could end up trading away some of their key players before the off-season is done, they also should not be afraid to acquire players who could help them in the long term.

Marner bolts for Vegas, Demko and Boeser stay in Vancouver as NHL free agency opens

A star winger on the move. A star goaltender and sniper staying put. NHL general managers were hard at work before the league's free agency mad dash began Tuesday. Mitch Marner inked an eight-year, US$96-million contract with the Maple Leafs before getting shipped to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal that ends his time in Toronto. The 28-year-old, who grew up just north of the city, spent nine seasons with the Original Six franchise that included memorable moments — and plenty of heartache. Marner, fairly or not, bore the brunt of fan anger for the Leafs' playoff failings that saw them win just two of 11 series after selecting him No. 4 overall at the 2015 draft as part of a so-called 'Core 4' of talented forwards that came to include Auston Matthews, John Tavares and William Nylander. The Thornhill, Ont., product registered four 90-point seasons, including a career-high 102 in 2024-25, but was unable to raise his level in the playoffs. The Leafs also confirmed they have signed winger Matthew Knies on a six-year, $46.5-million term — a deal that was widely reported over the weekend. The Vancouver Canucks, meanwhile, re-signed netminder Thatcher Demko to a three-year, $25.5-million contract extension before a surprise turn of events, as scoring winger Brock Boeser stayed put on a seven-year, $50.75-million deal after it looked like he would be heading out of town as an unrestricted free agent. The club is also keeping winger Conor Garland on a six-year pact worth $36 million. The Carolina Hurricanes signed forward Logan Stankoven to an eight-year, $48-million contract extension that kicks in for the 2026-27 season. The Edmonton Oilers traded winger Viktor Arvidsson to the Boston Bruins for a fifth-round pick in the 2027 NHL draft. The Montreal Canadiens got in on the action, dealing defenceman Logan Mailloux to the St. Louis Blues for forward Zack Bolduc. The Calgary Flames signed defenceman Joel Hanley to a two-year extension worth $1.75 million per season. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 1, 2025.

Stars hire Oilers assistant Glen Gulutzan as head coach, his second stint with Dallas

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Stars have hired Glen Gulutzan as their head coach 12 years after he was fired from his first stint with them. General manager Jim Nill announced the move Tuesday, with Gulutzan succeeding Peter DeBoer, who was fired following the team's playoff elimination in the Western Conference final for the third season in a row. Back in 2013, Nill had been the GM for only two weeks when he fired Gulutzan. Gulutzan, who turns 54 in August, returns to Dallas after spending the past seven seasons as an assistant with the Edmonton Oilers, including the past two that ended with trips to the Stanley Cup Final. 'Since his previous time in Dallas, Glen has worked tirelessly to establish himself as one of the most respected coaches in the NHL,' Nill said. 'His extensive NHL experience, both as a head coach and assistant coach, speaks to his ability to innovate and adapt to the modern game, as well as build relationships with his players. Glen has worked with some of the best players in the world and continually found ways to maximize their skill sets to contribute to team success. We have full confidence that he is the right person to elevate our team to the next level.' The Stars announced the hiring of Gulutzan only minutes after the league's annual free agency signing period opened. They will formally reintroduce him Wednesday at their home arena. This is Gulutzan's third job in charge of an NHL team after leading the Stars from 2011-13 and the Calgary Flames from 2016-18. 'My family and I are excited to come back to Texas where I started my NHL coaching journey more than a decade ago,' Gulutzan said. 'Jim and his staff have built a roster that is one of the most talented and deepest in the entire League. The right pieces are in place to compete for the Stanley Cup on a yearly basis. I'm ready to get to Dallas and start the preparation for next season.' This is Nill's sixth head coach in Dallas, where he is going into his 13th season. Among his first decisions after becoming the GM was to not retain Gulutzan, who was 64-57-9 in his two seasons during the Stars' franchise-long stretch of five consecutive seasons missing the playoffs. Gulutzan was 82-68-14 in his two seasons coaching the Flames, who were swept in their only playoff appearance with him. Lindy Ruff was the first Dallas coach hired by Nill, who made two playoff appearances in four years before Ken Hitchcock returned for one season with the Stars, the team he led to its only Stanley Cup title in 1999 and was Western Conference champions again the next season.
