Harris English moves into top 6 of U.S. Ryder Cup standings. Who else climbed after British?

Yahooa day ago
Harris English might have played his way onto the U.S. Ryder Cup team the last couple months.
It started with his T-2 finish at the PGA Championship. Then he finished T-12 at the Memorial, T-4 at the Travelers and capped it with a solo second at the 2025 British Open, finishing four shots behind Scottie Scheffler at Royal Portrush.
His finish Sunday vaulted him four spots up the U.S. Ryder Cup standings to sixth, the final automatic spot to make Team USA for the biennial competition in two months at Bethpage Black. Scheffler, the world No. 1, is the only player already on the team via points. Next month, the top six in the standings will also earn automatic spots after the BMW Championship.
The British Open was the last chance for players to earn large point totals, and English capitalized. Another player who cashed in was Chris Gotterup, his solo third moving him up 19 spots to 22nd on the list.
Captain Keegan Bradley sits 10th in the points list, but with his recent play, fans have clamored for him to use a pick on himself. Time will tell to see whether that happens.
Only four more weeks remains for golfers to automatically earn their spots on team USA, but for a majority of players trying to take on Team Europe, they're going to have to show Bradley why they deserve a captain's pick with their play.
Here's a look at the updated United States Ryder Cup standings after the British Open:

Golf odds for 2026 majors: Scottie Scheffler early favorite after Open Championship win

The world's No. 1 golfer just won the final major on the golf calendar this year, and betting experts anticipate plenty more big wins on the horizon. Updated odds for the 2026 golf majors are out, and Scottie Scheffler is the familiar name at the top of every list. He is considered the favorite to win every major in 2026 coming off his 2025 Open Championship victory at Royal Portrush, according to BetMGM. It shouldn't be a surprise at this point. Scheffler was also the betting favorite entering all four majors this season. He also won his first PGA Championship in May. Scheffler only needs to win the U.S. Open to join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only golfers in the modern era to win the sport's grand slam. 'Any doubts about Scottie Scheffler's British Open pedigree were emphatically squashed by the American at Royal Portrush with an effortless four-shot victory," BetMGM senior trader Matt Wall said. "BetMGM immediately shortened his 2026 Masters price to +400 from +500 and that could still shorten further should he continue to dominate on the PGA Tour. The comparisons with Tiger Woods certainly don't look out of place right now. All the early action is on Scottie to win all four majors at +25000, and he is the favorite in each one right now.' British Open winner Scottie Scheffler takes Claret Jug on Tonight Show, to Happy Gilmore 2

After an epic week in Great Britain, former Texas Longhorn Scottie Scheffler is back in the United States and enjoying the spoils of his British Open win with his family. The four-time major champion stopped by the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and went to the premier of Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler and the cast. Scheffler dominated the media and the golf course in Northern Ireland. His monologue about professional satisfaction, or lack thereof, and the importance of family was the big story at the British Open last week until he blew away the field for his second major of the year. His reaction to winning the Claret Jug and sharing it with his 15-month-old son Bennett will live in his fan's memories for years to come. Scheffler said after winning at Royal Portrush he couldn't wait to get home to celebrate. But the Texas Ex stopped off in New York City for some fun before heading back to Dallas. First, Scheffler did a quick visit on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Scheffler got a standing ovation from the crowd as soon as the curtain opened to reveal him holding the trophy. Then Fallon and Scheffler took a selfie with the Claret Jug and the audience in the background. Then it was off to world premier of Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler and the rest of the cast. Again, the Claret Jug joined Scheffler and his wife Meredith. Scheffler reportedly has a cameo in the sequel to the 1996 classic. Not every entertainment reporter even know who the world's No. 1 golfer was. In the original, Happy Gilmore famously won the Tour Championship. That is a tournament Scheffler has now won twice in real life. On Monday, it was announced Scheffler would fun the renovation of the Texas Longhorns Men's Golf Team practice facility, which will be renamed "Scheff's Kitchen." Happy Gilmore 2 premieres on Netflix Friday, July 25. Follow us on X, formerly Twitter, at @LonghornsWire

U.S. Ryder Cup players will use first fall event, the Procore Championship, to help stay sharp

The Procore Championship in Napa, California, is shaping up to be training camp for the Ryder Cup for the American team to avoid getting rusty ahead of the Sept. 26-28 matches. 'I know I'll be there,' Scottie Scheffler said. Ditto for Xander Schauffele, who suggested the world's No. 1 player was a strong voice in urging whoever is on the U.S. team to be at Silverado Resort on Sept. 11-14. That was a big concern at the last Ryder Cup, held outside Rome in 2023. The PGA Tour season that year ended Aug. 27 with the Tour Championship at East Lake, and the majority of the team had a full month away from tournament golf before going to Marco Simone for the start of the Ryder Cup on Sept. 29. Justin Thomas and Max Homa were the only players in Napa, along with U.S. captain Zach Johnson. Europe had its players at the BMW PGA Championship in England. Team Europe got out to a fast start at Marco Simone and sailed to an easy victory to win back the cup. The Procore Championship is the only PGA Tour event on the schedule between the Tour Championship and the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York. It also is the same week as the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Odds are against having all 12 of the Americans there — one of them is Bryson DeChambeau, who is banned from the PGA Tour because he's with LIV Golf. Ryder Cup update: Keegan Bradley confirms Bryson DeChambeau's inclusion; Chris Gotterup makes huge jump DeChambeau's T-10 finish at Portrush impressed Bradley enough for Bradley to confirm to Sports Illustrated that DeChambeau will be among the 12 players on his squad. U.S. captain Keegan Bradley told Sports Illustrated he would use one of his six picks on DeChambeau, who finished in the top 10 at three of the four majors this year. 'Bryson is going to be a very important piece to us winning the Ryder Cup,' Bradley said in a text message to SI. 'He brings so much. He brings energy, passion but most importantly, he's one of the best players on the planet.' The LIV Golf League season ends Aug. 24 with its team championship in Michigan. The only other competition for DeChambeau would be a YouTube match or European tour stops in Switzerland, Ireland, England or France.
