Harry Connick Jr. to premiere composition at Carnegie Hall for 100th anniversary of mother's birth

NEW YORK (AP) — Harry Connick Jr. will premiere a composition for the 100th anniversary of his mother's birth for Carnegie Hall's 2025-26 season, which celebrates the Declaration of Independence with a festival titled: 'United in Sound: America at 250.'
Connick has tentatively titled the work 'Elaboratio,' wanting to musically elaborate on his mother's life. He will play piano in the performance for his Carnegie main stage debut on May 22, 2026, exactly 100 years after the birth of Anita Frances Livingston. The program is to be repeated the following night.
His manager called Carnegie Hall executive director Clive Gillinson seven years ago to reserve the date.
'I just wanted to do something that I think would have made her proud and and honor her memory by performing in a place that she always wanted me to play and to write something that'll last forever in her honor,' Connick said during an interview after Wednesday's news conference.
Connick's mother died in 1981, when he was 13.
He is still composing the work, which will have three movements about each of the places she lived: New York; Nouaceur, Morocco; and New Orleans.
His only Carnegie appearance has been in the smaller Zankel Hall in 2005.
Carnegie's festival runs from January to July and will include at least 35 performances. Works by Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Philip Glass, Wynton Marsalis and Julia Wolfe are featured as well as underrepresented composers such as Amy Beach, Florence Price and William Dawson. Jazz, rock 'n' roll, hip-hop, Broadway and bluegrass are among the genres.
A March 2 concert starring J. Harrison Ghee and Betsy Wolf will feature 'The Secret Life of the American Musical,' based on Jack Viertel's book on the making of Broadway shows.
Conductor Marin Alsop, pianist Lang Lang, mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard and violinist Maxim Vengerov will be the artists of Carnegie's Perspectives series. Arvo Pärt, who turns 90 in September, will hold the Debs Composer's Chair but will be not travel to New York because of his age, Gillinson said.
In the first of more than 170 concerts, conductor Daniel Harding leads opening night on Oct. 7 with alumni of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America and pianist Yuja Wang. The program includes Bernstein's selections from symphonic dances from 'West Side Story,' Tchaikovsky's piano concerto No. 1 and Stravinsky's 'The Firebird Suite.'

Sold-out musical about Luigi Mangione adds new S.F. date

San Francisco's sold-out musical about Luigi Mangione has extended its run due to popular demand. ' Luigi: The Musical,' inspired by the social media frenzy surrounding the 27-year-old suspect in the murder case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has added a July 13 performance at the Independent. The music venue on Divisadaro Street has a capacity of 500, roughly five times that of the Taylor Street Theater, where the show premieres Friday, June 13. All five of the production's originally announced June performances at the Taylor Street Theater, the former Exit on Taylor in the Tenderloin, sold out more than a month ago. 'Luigi: The Musical' was developed by Nova Bradford, Arielle Johnson, André Margatini and Caleb Zeringue, and is staged in the style of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical 'Chicago.' The satirical show is set at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center and features Mangione alongside a fictional group of prison mates including Sean 'Diddy' Combs, whose sex trafficking and racketeering trial began last month, and fallen FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. 'Luigi the character, as we've written him, is dead serious about his thoughts and goals,' Johnson previously told the Chronicle. 'There's something campy about the whole 'good guy with a gun' premise.' As Johnson and his colleagues prepared for the stage production's June 13 premiere, the real Mangione pleaded not guilty to four federal charges against him for the murder of Thompson in December. He is next set to appear in court June 26. During the appearance, a trial date may be set. Mangione spent his 27th birthday last month at the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he has been held without bail since Dec. 19. To mark the occasion, he sent a list of 27 things he's grateful for to various people who have been writing him letters while he has been locked up. The list has since gone viral on social media and features entries such as 'memes' and 'Latinas for Mangione,' both nods to the internet discourse around his arrest. Mangione also revealed that around 30,000 people donated more than $1 million to his legal fund, and expressed gratitude for the various books and letters that he has received.

Carrie Fisher Had to Encourage Mark Hamill to 'Embrace' ‘Star Wars': 'Get Over Yourself, You're Luke Skywalker'

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Mark Hamill wasn't so forthcoming about his legacy in the Star Wars franchise. During an appearance on NPR's Fresh Air, The Life of Chuck actor recalled a time the late Carrie Fisher attended a Broadway show he was in and noticed that he didn't have Star Wars listed in his Playbill biography. The actress, who played Princess Leia, encouraged Hamill to 'embrace' his credit in the franchise as Luke Skywalker instead of shying away from it. More from The Hollywood Reporter Mark Hamill Rules Out Doing More 'Star Wars' 'Andor' Team Breaks Down Their Favorite Series Moments, Including That Mon Mothma Speech Ryan Reynolds Wants Disney to "Gamble" on an R-Rated 'Star Wars' Project 'In the Playbill, in my bio, I listed all my theater credits and at the end it said, 'He's also known for a series of popular space movies,'' he said. 'And she goes, 'What's the deal? How come you didn't mention Star Wars?'' Hamill responded, 'And I said, 'Well, I want to show that I have a resume that includes extensive theater credits,' and she said, 'Hey, get over yourself. You're Luke Skywalker, I'm Princess Leia. Embrace it.'' The longtime Star Wars actor admitted that he 'kind of saw what she meant' and that Fisher 'was someone that sort of put it in perspective for me.' Despite his extensive history with the franchise — and the recent cameos he's made as Skywalker in projects such as The Mandalorian — Hamill ruled out a potential Star Wars return and said the filmmakers 'should focus on the future and all the new characters.' 'I am so grateful to [creator George Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called Star Wars 'the most expensive low-budget movie ever made,'' said Hamill during an interview with 'We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I'm appreciative of that. But I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.'
