What preseason magazines think of Florida football entering 2025 season

Yahoo08-07-2025
With Florida football set to begin practice at the end of July, hope remains high entering the 2025 season.
The Florida Gators return an experienced squad that includes eight starters on offense, eight starters on defense and kicker Trey Smack. UF closed its season at 8-5 on a four-game win streak and picked up its first bowl win since 2019, beating Tulane 33-8 in the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa.

Florida is 19-19 in three seasons under head coach Billy Napier, who for now, at least, appears off the hot seat. The challenge for Napier is to build off that momentum against another challenging schedule that includes games against national-title contenders LSU, Miami, Texas, Texas A&M, Georgia and Tennessee.
"We've gotten more and more familiar with the evaluation process in terms of what's required in our league at the top of college football," Napier said. "And then I think you learn a lot about the football piece, too, in terms of how you put your team together and what it takes to win our conference and win a national championship."
Here's where preseason magazines project the Gators going into the 2025 season:
Where Phil Steele Magazine projects Florida football
Phil Steele has Florida at No. 17 in its preseason poll and picks the Gators to finish seventh in the SEC.

"Billy Napier took over a Gators squad that had below average recruiting classes prior to him and two super tough schedules," the magazine wrote. "In '22 they got to a bowl game and lost (6-7) and in '23 were 5-7 with three close losses. Last year they had a brutal schedule, but all of my nine sets power ratings call for seven-plus wins with just three true SEC road games. After a 4-5 start, which included their QB out for the year, DJ Lagway led them to four wins and an 8-5 year (beat No. 21 LSU. No. 9 Ole Miss). This year Lagway is back, and they face the fourth-toughest schedule in the SEC."
Steele has seven UF players on his All-SEC teams, with defensive tackle Caleb Banks and long snapper Rocco Underwood on the first team, center Jake Slaughter and left tackle Austin Barber on the second team and defensive end Tyreak Sapp, kicker Trey Smack and wide receiver Eugene Wilson on the third team. Underwood was named a first-team All-American by the magazine, while Slaughter was named a second-team All-American, Banks a third-team All-American and Wilson a fourth-team All-American.
Where Lindy's Magazine projects Florida football
Lindy's has Florida as No. 15 in its preseason Top 25 and picks Florida to finish seventh in the SEC.

"No longer on college football's hottest seat, Billy Napier hopes to ascend with DJ Lagway, the most talented quarterback the program has had since Tim Tebow," the magazine writes. "UCLA wideout J. Michael Sturdivant was a nice add and edge Kofi Asare (UMass) was a needed depth piece."
Lindy's has Slaughter as an All-SEC first team selection and Banks and Smack on its All-SEC third team.
Where Athlon Magazine projects Florida football
Athon has Florida at No. 11 in its preseason Top 25 and picks Florida to finish fifth in the SEC.
"The Gators have momentum after ending 2024 on a four-game winning streak," the magazine writes. "The late surge helped ease the pressure on head coach Billy Napier, especially with quarterback DJ Lagway's emergence to superstar status. However, the Gators will be holding their breath all offseason after Lagway was limited in spring practice due to a shoulder injury ... The Gators could play seven preseason Top 25 teams on a daunting schedule. Lagway's recovery and development will share just how successful the '25 season will be."

Infielder Curtis Mead excited for ‘new beginning' after being traded to the Chicago White Sox

SEATTLE — Curtis Mead described his 2025 as 'interesting.' 'I obviously wasn't playing very frequently in Tampa and started off pretty slowly,' the infielder said Tuesday afternoon. 'But I felt like probably my last six to eight weeks in the big leagues were pretty good. 'And then I went down to Triple A and was enjoying playing every day and felt like I was getting into a little bit of a rhythm at the end there, as well. It's been an up-and-down journey, for sure.' That journey has taken Mead to the Chicago White Sox. He was acquired as part of the July 31 trade that sent starter Adrian Houser to the Tampa Bay Rays. 'I really appreciated my time in Tampa,' Mead said. 'But playing time was pretty limited. Excited for a new beginning, a new start.' After the deal, Mead went to Triple-A Charlotte — along with the two pitchers the Sox acquired from the Rays in Duncan Davitt and Ben Peoples. When third baseman/first baseman Miguel Vargas went on the injured list Sunday, the Sox called up Mead. He made his Sox debut on Tuesday, flying out to right field as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning of the 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Mead called the opportunity with the Sox 'special.' 'For another club to believe in you and give you another opportunity is definitely something you don't take for granted,' he said. '(The trade deadline) was challenging a little bit, but ultimately, it wasn't in my control. Just going out there in Triple A and trying to be the best version of myself and showcase myself to other teams.' Manager Will Venable said the Sox plan to have Mead available to 'mix and match.' 'He's a right-handed bat we like against lefties,' Venable said on Tuesday. Mead, 24, slashed .226/.318/.339 with three home runs, eight RBIs and 14 runs in 49 games with the Rays in 2025. He also played in 14 games with Triple-A Durham, where he had a .264/.339/.472 slash line with three homers, seven RBIs and 10 runs in 14 games. He had a productive two games with the Knights, going 4-for-7 with two doubles, three walks, two RBIs and two runs. In parts of three major-league seasons (2023-25) with the Rays, Mead slashed .238/.307/.322 with five home runs, 20 RBIs and 36 runs in 111 games. He has appeared in 42 games at second base, 40 at third, 20 at first and one at shortstop. Mead has had considerable success in the minors. He has a .298/.372/.506 slash line with 122 doubles, 57 home runs, 237 RBIs, 155 walks and 260 runs scored over parts of seven seasons in the minor leagues. A native of Adelaide, Australia, he was originally signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an international free agent on May 4, 2018, before being traded to the Rays on June 24, 2019, in exchange for left-handed pitcher Cristopher Sánchez. Mead entered the 2024 season as the No. 55 overall prospect in baseball and 2023 as the No. 33 overall prospect. He was a member of the American League roster at the 2022 All-Star Futures Game. 'We've identified some things in his offensive game that we feel like we can try to tap into to make him a real impactful major-league player,' Sox general manager Chris Getz said during a video conference call following the July 31 trade deadline. Getz drew some similarities in the situations for Mead and Vargas, who the Sox picked up from the Los Angeles Dodgers last season as part of a three-team deal. 'A high-profile player that hadn't really translated or taken at the major-league level,' Getz said. 'Through his continued development, (Vargas) has now become a productive major-league player. We feel Curtis can do the same thing.' As for the pitching components of the trade with the Rays, Davitt allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 6 1/3 innings in his first start for Charlotte on Tuesday at Syracuse. Peoples has allowed two earned runs in two relief innings with the Knights. 'When you look at Davitt, he's been starting at Triple A, he'll do the same thing for us in Charlotte,' Getz said. 'And Peoples has a history of starting. This year he's been in the bullpen. We'll continue the bullpen route the remainder of 2025, but he has versatility and he could be a starter in the future as well.' Mead is looking forward to what's ahead in his future. 'I was excited with the opportunity to hopefully play a little bit more and play in front of different coaches and different players,' Mead said. 'It's a little bit of a breath of fresh air.'

No October home games will be challenging hurdle for Texas Longhorns national title hopes

Could an entire month of road games cost Texas dearly? Kickoff times and TV windows are here 🤘@TexasLonghorns x @SEC October will be a challenge for the Texas Longhorns. UT has a grand total of zero home games at Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin in October. The entire month will be on the road. And while none of the opponents are ranked in the Top 15, the strain of the month could cause the Horns to stumble. Home field advantage probably means more in college football than in any sports. College football stadiums, especially in the SEC, feature the most boisterous and rowdy fans. There is the youth of many players. There are much tougher logistics. There is the time spent actually traveling and unfamiliar beds and unfamiliar food and unfamiliar people. It is tough for players to get into a comfort zone. Typically, Texas' road and home games ping pong through the schedule. One week on the road, followed by a home game. Sometimes it's two. But this year, Texas plays four games on the road in a row. Of course, one of those games is at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas for the Red River Rivalry against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Longhorns will technically be the home team this year, but that doesn't factor in the travel impact on the team. Texas opens the month at the Swamp to play a possibly resurgent Florida Gators team. Florida's star quarterback DJ Lagway will be a challenge for the Texas defense. Lagway was injured last season when the Gators traveled to Austin and missed the Texas game. With the OU game the following week, No. 17 Florida might be the most dangerous game Texas faces all season. Texas follows up the visit to Gainesville with the trip to Dallas to face the Sooners. Then UT will travel to Kentucky and Mississippi State in the back-to-back weeks after the Sooners. The Wildcats and Bulldogs brought up the rear in the 2024 SEC standings. But their cause could be helped against the Longhorns thanks to possible road weariness by Texas. Sure, at Ohio State in August and at Georgia in November loom larger than any game in October for the Horns. But an entire month on the road can't be discounted as a true hurdle Texas will have to survive. Follow us on X/Twitter at @LonghornsWire.

Phillies' Kyle Schwarber looming in National League MVP race as Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani struggle

A new contender is creeping into the 2025 National League MVP race. After sitting atop the odds board all season, Shohei Ohtani suddenly has some competition in Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, who has been red-hot of late. Ohtani is down to -400 to win the award at FanDuel Sportsbook – the lowest he's been in months – while Schwarber is lurking at +300. Schwarber has 15 home runs in his last 30 games, which is three more than any hitter in baseball in that span, catapulting him into the award race. Overall, this season, Schwarber has an NL-leading 40 long balls – two more than Ohtani – while hitting .256/.379/.585. Schwarber's dominant stretch – and the Mets' struggles – have helped boost the Phillies to the top of the NL East, holding on to a 2.5-game lead before Wednesday's slate. Meanwhile, Ohtani hasn't been his otherworldly self over that same 30-game stretch, hitting nine homers while slashing .233/.346/.491, which is a significant step down from his first half of the season. Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani smiles after grounding out during the second inning at the MLB baseball All-Star game between the American League and National League, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Atlanta. AP Ohtani has also made just two starts on the mound since the All-Star break after leaving his last start in late July with cramping, although he is scheduled to toss four innings against the Cardinals on Wednesday. Perhaps most importantly, the Dodgers haven't played well of late. Since July 1, they are just 13-16 and are hanging on to just a three-game lead in the NL West over the Padres despite coming into the season with some of the highest expectations for a team in recent history. Learn all you need to know about MLB Betting Last week, we pointed out Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong as a potential challenger to Ohtani for the NL MVP. But award races can change quickly, and oddsmakers have Schwarber as the one most likely to threaten Ohtani's chances at a fourth MVP in five seasons.
