, watches and advisories to millions of people across the South and parts of the Midwest in the US. Heat alerts from the NWS spanned parts of US states with a
heat dome
expected to cover swaths of the US this week.
A "heat dome" is expected to increase temperatures and humidity levels in those areas through the rest of the week. The hot, humid air is likely to stretch into the Northeast by Thursday.

-AccuWeather says almost 200 million people will experience the triple digit "RealFeel" temperatures on July 25 alone. The "extreme heat warnings" will sweep across large parts of the US, affecting more than 70 million Americans.

-The NWS issued extreme heat warnings when "extremely dangerous heat conditions are expected or occurring. Extreme heat warnings are in effect for parts of Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
-"Dangerously hot conditions," with heat index values—which reflect how hot it feels when temperature and humidity are considered—nearing or surpassing 110 degrees would be possible in these areas, the weather department said.
-Less severe heat advisories spanned parts of South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Indiana, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Michigan. In these areas, the heat index values were also expected to hit the triple-digit range.

-AccuWeather meteorologist Kai Kerkow told Newsweek: "A heat dome will bring near record breaking hot conditions across the South Central U.S. this week, with cities like Wichita Falls, Dallas, and Kansas City expected to hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit for the first time this season.
-Kerkow added that temperatures in cities such as New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., are expected to climb into the mid-90s. On Friday, AccuWeather predicts a high of 95 in New York, nearing the 97 degree record set in 1999, Kerkow said.
-"Over 90 million people are under heat alerts currently (Extreme Heat Warnings, Watches, and Heat Advisories). The heat is expected to persist the longest over the Mid-MS Valley and Mid-South regions this week," NWS Weather Prediction Centre said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

-Prolonged extreme heat, as is expected in the heat dome this week, is especially dangerous for people who do not have access to air-conditioning or who spend a lot of time outdoors. If you live in a place impacted by the heat dome, stay indoors and cool for as long as you can.
-Understand and look out for symptoms of heat-related illness. These include heavy sweating, fatigue, dizziness, muscle cramps, nausea and headaches. If you are experiencing these symptoms, move to a cool area to rest and hydrate.
-"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the alerts caution. "Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."

At the Amrapali site, contractual workers attempted temporary repairs using truckloads of soil to make the road passable. Traffic police, meanwhile, restricted movement to a single lane on the Crossings Republik-Shahberi stretch, where two lanes usually remain operational. "Such a huge cave-in during rain is a cause for concern. It is not just inconvenient — it is dangerous as well," said Dharmendra, an Iteda village resident, expressing fears about potential accidents, especially during nighttime. India to get normal rainfall in August; above normal in September, predicts IMD
Representative image (ANI) NEW DELHI: India is expected to receive above-normal rainfall during the second half of the monsoon season , August and September, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In an online press briefing on Thursday, IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that most regions, barring the Northeast and adjoining eastern parts of the country, are likely to witness normal rainfall in August, while September is projected to record above-normal rainfall. India has already received above-average rainfall in the first half of the season (June–July), with some states like Himachal Pradesh witnessing flash floods. 'Overall, above-normal rainfall (106 percent of the long period average of 422.8 mm) is most likely over the country during the second half of the southwest monsoon season,' Mohapatra said. He added that rainfall will be normal to above normal across most regions, except parts of Northeast, eastern India, central India, and southwestern peninsular India, where a shortfall is likely. Although rainfall activity may remain subdued over the next two weeks, it does not meet the criteria for a 'break monsoon phase', the IMD clarified. A break phase refers to a temporary monsoon pause when the rain-bearing trough shifts closer to the Himalayan foothills. Between June 1 and July 31, the country recorded 474.3 mm of rainfall against a normal of 445.8 mm, marking a 6% surplus. The strong July rains were attributed to favorable Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) conditions and six low-pressure systems, of which four intensified into depressions. 'Among them, three formed over land and moved from Gangetic West Bengal/Northern Bay of Bengal to Rajasthan, triggering frequent heavy to very heavy rainfall and even extremely heavy rainfall on some days,' said the IMD. The IMD also reported that ENSO-neutral conditions are currently prevailing and likely to continue through October, with a possibility of weak La Niña conditions post-monsoon. In May, the weather office had predicted monsoon rainfall at 106% of the long-period average of 87 cm for the June–September period. Rainfall between 96% and 104% is considered normal. The monsoon is crucial for India's economy, particularly the agriculture sector, which sustains nearly 42% of the population and contributes over 18% to the GDP. It also plays a key role in replenishing water reservoirs essential for drinking water and power generation.
