Madras HC to view ‘Manushi' as CBFC demands 37 cuts

Time of India2 days ago
Chennai: To ascertain if it is fair for the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) to demand 37 cuts in the Tamil movie 'Manushi' for its release in theatres, Justice N Anand Venkatesh has agreed to view the film in a city theatre.
The movie was produced by film director Vetrimaram.
Justice Anand Venkatesh passed the order as CBFC informed the court that it requires 37 cuts in the film. The issue pertains to a plea moved by Vetrimaran, alleging that CBFC denied certification to the movie without a review. On June 4, Justice Anand Venkatesh told CBFC to specify the objectionable, visuals, and dialogues by June 16 or to watch the movie with producer and point out objectionable portions to him.
The film, starring Andrea, is directed by Gopi Nainar. It revolves around a woman who is arrested on false charges and her plight as an undertrial prisoner.

Vetrimaran moved the court, alleging that he was not allowed to voice his opinion before the CBFC made its decision.
The CBFC denied certification to the movie on the grounds that it went against the integrity of the state, contained scenes that were contemptuous, defamed govt policies, portrayed stereotypes leading to a north/south divide, and had many scenes that were against the interests of the country.
