Punish them for 7 lifetimes: Anupam Kher demands ruthless action for Pahalgam attack

India Today23-04-2025

Actor Anupam Kher on Tuesday night shared a video condemning the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. 26 were killed, and several others were injured during the attack on Tuesday afternoon, when gunmen opened fire on tourists gathered in a valley. Kher, a Kashmiri Pandit, demanded the toughest punishment possible for the terrorists. He requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah, to ensure that the action taken against the perpetrators is so tough that it becomes an example for everyone. In the video, he is seen mentioning how it is simply barbaric to crush tourists. He also cited the reports claiming that the victims were first asked about their religion before being shot.advertisementKher said (translated into English): "What happened today in Pahalgam - the massacre of Hindus, where 27 Hindus were killed one by one - brings immense grief, but there is also a rage that knows no bounds. I've seen such things throughout my life, especially what happened to Kashmiri Hindus in Kashmir. 'The Kashmir Files' was just a small glimpse of that story - which many dismissed as propaganda."
He continued, "But now, people coming from different parts of India to spend their holidays in Kashmir, being identified, having their religion determined, and then being killed — there are no words for this. Sometimes, words become impotent."The 70-year-old mentioned the haunting viral image of a woman seen sitting beside her husband's dead body after the attack. The actor said, "I cannot forget the image of that woman sitting beside her husband's corpse. I was listening to the interview with Ms. Pallavi and how she asked the terrorists to kill her as well, but they asked her to pass on a message ahead. It is beyond barbaric."advertisementKher added, "I want to fold my hands and make an earnest request to our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to Amit Shah, and the entire government - that this time, the terrorists should be taught such a lesson that they aren't even capable of committing such acts for the next seven lifetimes. There should be no mercy to terrorists.""I want to restrain my words. This is wrong. Such an act is wrong in any part of the world, but for it to happen in our own country - this massacre - is extremely wrong (sic)," he concluded. The targeted firing occurred in a popular tourist zone bustling with visitors, many of whom had gathered for photos in the scenic backdrop. The attack has been claimed by a shadow outfit affiliated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.While Shah is already in Kashmir to overlook the security arrangements, PM Modi cut short his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia and returned late night. He also had an immediate meeting with the Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, and the National Security Agency (NSA) on the attack.Must Watch

Amit Shah approves ₹25 crore compensation for 2,060 houses damaged in J&K by Pakistani shelling post Operation Sindoor

A month after the Operation Sindoor, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday facilitated an additional provision of ₹ 25 crore from the Ministry of Home Affairs for 2,060 houses damaged by Pakistani shelling in border districts. The announcement by Amit Shah comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised additional compensation for houses damaged by Pakistani shelling in the border districts of Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi had announced an additional compensation of ₹ 2 lakh for each fully damaged house and ₹ 1 lakh for each partially damaged house. The Home Ministry ensured swift implementation of the decision and stated that similar compensation will also be provided in the border areas of Punjab. Earlier on 29–30 May 2025, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch. During the visit, he handed over appointment letters on compassionate grounds to the family members of those who lost their lives due to cross-border firing. According to the norms. compensation for the damages caused by cross-border shelling was provided immediately. Following Operation Sindoor, several incidents of cross-border shelling were reported in border districts of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. PM to visit Cyprus, Croatia during his trip to Canada

NEW DELHI Reiterating India's traditional foreign policy goals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus and Croatia, official sources said in New Delhi on Monday (June 9, 2025). Mr. Modi will visit Cyprus on his way to Canada to participate in the G-7 summit (June 15-17), and on the way back, he will pay a visit to Croatia, which will be the first-ever Prime Minister-level visit from the Indian side since the formation of Croatia in 1991 after the dissolution of former Yugoslavia. Both visits are being described as important from a political as well as a commercial point of view. Sources in New Delhi hinted that the Cyprus visit will serve as a message to Türkiye, which had supplied weapons to Pakistan, which it used during Operation Sindoor in May. It will also act as a timely revival of top-level contacts as Cyprus is set to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026. Cyprus had condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and indicated that it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism from Pakistan at the EU-level discussions. Cyprus has been consistent in its support of India on the Kashmir issue and cross-border terrorism from Pakistan. That apart, the Mediterranean country, which has a territorial dispute with Ankara regarding the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has also supported India in its campaign for a permanent seat at the U.N. Security Council, the Nuclear Suppliers Group, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. In a reciprocal gesture, India has supported the resolution of the Cypriot territorial dispute as per UNSC resolutions, international law, and the EU acquis, the collective EU body on laws and regulations. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had visited Cyprus in 1982, while Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited the island nation in 2002. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Nicosia in December 2022, while President Ram Nath Kovind visited in 2018. Officials said Mr. Modi is expected to meet President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides. Mr. Modi's visit to Croatia is also being described as a tribute to the strong tradition of Indology that exists in the country. The University of Zagreb has been a seat of serious study of Indology, and Croatia is noted for the presence of ISKCON (International Society of Krishna Consciousness). In recent years, these cultural contacts were supplemented by growing defence and technological relationships. Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić-Radman participated in the Raisina Dialogue in March 2023, when he signed a memorandum of understanding on defence cooperation with Mr. Jaishankar. Sources said the Croatia visit has additional diplomatic importance as it indicates India's continued commitment to partners of the non-alignment, as the erstwhile Yugoslavia's founding father, Josip Broz Tito, was a Croatian as well. Officials in New Delhi indicated that both Cyprus and Croatia have acquired growing significance in recent years after the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) was launched during the G-20 summit in New Delhi in 2023. Croatia and Cyprus are being viewed here as 'potential participants' and investors in the IMEC-related projects. Croatia, with its extensive maritime facilities and ports on the Adriatic Sea, is attractive for India's commitment to the IMEC, sources said, setting the context of Mr. Modi's upcoming visit.

"You lose and say all this...not good to dismiss mandate of people": Nitin Gadkari on Rahul Gandhi's allegations on Maharashtra polls

New Delhi [India], June 9 (ANI): Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday slammed Rahul Gandhi over his allegations concerning Maharashtra assembly polls, saying that the Congress leader is making such remarks after losing the polls and it is not good 'to dismiss a mandate'. 'It is not good to dismiss a mandate given by the people. You lose and now say all this,' Gadkari told ANI in an interview. Rahul Gandhi had alleged 'rigging' in Maharashtra assembly polls and called upon the Election Commission to publish consolidated, digital, machine-readable voter rolls for the most recent elections to the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabhas of all states, including Maharashtra, saying that 'telling the truth' will protect poll panel's credibility. In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi, who is Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, referred to the ECI's response to his allegations concerning Maharashtra polls and said 'releasing unsigned, evasive notes to intermediaries is not the way to respond to serious questions'. Rahul Gandhi had written an article in an English daily on the issue. Election Commission sources had said that the poll panel wrote a detailed letter to Congress in December last year rejecting its 'misleading' claims about voter turnout data in Maharashtra polls and, instead of writing to the poll panel directly, Rahul Gandhi keeps speaking and writing to media seeking answers to his 'same unfounded doubts again and again'. They said it is not clear as to why Rahul Gandhi is shying away from writing to EC in person himself and get a reply. ECI sources had said that the poll panel had extended an invitation to the Indian National Congress (INC) for interaction, which was scheduled for May 15. However, the meeting was later cancelled at the request of INC itself. Gadkari also countered Gandhi's 'Narender-Surrender' jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi had claimed that cessation of hostilities with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor had been done with mediation of US President Donald Trump. 'The citizens of the country know our government is very sensitive to the matter, how it works, how we respond and how we protect our people. We have almost ended Naxal activities in the country. (Improved) law and order is an achievement of our government,' the Union Minister said. Asked about the tragic stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, in which 11 people died during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations, Gadkari said Karnataka government should look into the lapses. 'An inquiry is being held into the matter. Where the lapses happened, Karnataka government needs to work on it,' the Union Minister stated. (ANI)
