Punish them for 7 lifetimes: Anupam Kher demands ruthless action for Pahalgam attack

India Today23-04-2025
Actor Anupam Kher on Tuesday night shared a video condemning the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. 26 were killed, and several others were injured during the attack on Tuesday afternoon, when gunmen opened fire on tourists gathered in a valley. Kher, a Kashmiri Pandit, demanded the toughest punishment possible for the terrorists. He requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah, to ensure that the action taken against the perpetrators is so tough that it becomes an example for everyone. In the video, he is seen mentioning how it is simply barbaric to crush tourists. He also cited the reports claiming that the victims were first asked about their religion before being shot.advertisementKher said (translated into English): "What happened today in Pahalgam - the massacre of Hindus, where 27 Hindus were killed one by one - brings immense grief, but there is also a rage that knows no bounds. I've seen such things throughout my life, especially what happened to Kashmiri Hindus in Kashmir. 'The Kashmir Files' was just a small glimpse of that story - which many dismissed as propaganda."
He continued, "But now, people coming from different parts of India to spend their holidays in Kashmir, being identified, having their religion determined, and then being killed — there are no words for this. Sometimes, words become impotent."The 70-year-old mentioned the haunting viral image of a woman seen sitting beside her husband's dead body after the attack. The actor said, "I cannot forget the image of that woman sitting beside her husband's corpse. I was listening to the interview with Ms. Pallavi and how she asked the terrorists to kill her as well, but they asked her to pass on a message ahead. It is beyond barbaric."advertisementKher added, "I want to fold my hands and make an earnest request to our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to Amit Shah, and the entire government - that this time, the terrorists should be taught such a lesson that they aren't even capable of committing such acts for the next seven lifetimes. There should be no mercy to terrorists.""I want to restrain my words. This is wrong. Such an act is wrong in any part of the world, but for it to happen in our own country - this massacre - is extremely wrong (sic)," he concluded. The targeted firing occurred in a popular tourist zone bustling with visitors, many of whom had gathered for photos in the scenic backdrop. The attack has been claimed by a shadow outfit affiliated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba.While Shah is already in Kashmir to overlook the security arrangements, PM Modi cut short his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia and returned late night. He also had an immediate meeting with the Minister of External Affairs, S Jaishankar, and the National Security Agency (NSA) on the attack.Must Watch

State eases laws for agricultural land purchase, introduces property registration reforms

Bengaluru: On the third day of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly's Monsoon Session (Aug 13), the House passed the Karnataka Land Reforms and Certain Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, simplifying several rules related to the purchase of agricultural land. As per the amendments, educational institutions or other entities can now purchase up to four hectares of agricultural land, with purchase approvals vested solely with district commissioners. Land acquired for establishing an educational institution can also be converted for other purposes if needed. The Bill also allows for the conversion of up to two acres of agricultural land for industrial use without extensive approvals. For renewable energy projects, authorities can issue an auto-conversion certificate. However, using agricultural land for non-agricultural purposes without permission or conversion will attract a fine of ₹1 lakh. In addition, the Assembly passed the Karnataka Registration (Amendment) Bill, 2025, presented by Minister Krishna Byre Gowda. The bill aims to make sub-registrar offices more citizen-friendly and simplify property registration procedures. It also includes measures to curb illegal registrations, halts paper-based property registrations, and mandates that all registrations be done only through the e-Khata system.

'A day to honour their grit': PM Modi marks Partition Horrors Remembrance Day

Ahead of the Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' and said that the day honours the grit and ability to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh of countless people who witnessed the Partition of India and Pakistan. An undated handout image released by the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on June 13, 2017 and taken circa 1947/1948 shows a camp for displaced Indian Muslims next to Humayun's Tomb in New Delhi, during the period of unrest following the Partition of India and Pakistan. In a post on X, Modi said that the day honours the grit and ability of the witnesses and victims of the Partition to face unimaginable loss and still find the strength to start afresh. 'Many of those affected went on to rebuild their lives and achieve remarkable milestones. This day is also a reminder of our enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony that hold our country together,' Modi further said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Modi had announced August 14 in 2021 as the 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' with the stated objective to commemorate the victims and the suffering of the Partition. The day is meant to remind present and future generations about the episode. The day would keep 'reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment', Modi said at the time. In 1947, the independence of India was accompanied by the partition of the British India into a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan, sparking one of the largest human migrations in history as Muslims moved to Pakistan and non-Muslims moved from to India. The Partition led to widespread rioting and killings that killed hundreds of thousands. Around 8 million non-Muslims moved from Pakistan to India and around 7.5 million Muslims moved from India to Pakistan (both West and East Pakistan; East Pakistan got independence from Pakistan in 1971 and became Bangladesh), according to Government of India's estimates. 'The estimate of those killed has varied from 5,00,000 to over 10,00,000. The generally accepted figure stands at around 5,00,000,' the GoI noted in a document at the time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Partition of India was a result of the Pakistan movement waged by was rooted in the demand for a separate country for Muslims, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Muslim League on the basis of 'two-nation theory' that said that Hindus and Muslims were two nations and could not live together in one country. However, the idea of Pakistan or at least a separate country for Muslims had been there for decades before 1940s when Jinnah ratchetted up the campaign. The Partition Museum has said, 'The demand for a separate nation for Muslims had been raised by various Muslim leaders in the previous decades, most famously by Allama Iqbal at a Muslim League conference at Allahabad in 1930 where he articulated the idea of a Muslim nation within India. The term 'Pak-Stan' had been coined by Choudhry Rahmat Ali in the 1930s while he was studying at Cambridge University.'

Live Events Earlier today, Union Health Minister and BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda called for national unity and "give a befitting reply to anti-national forces." Paying tribute to millions who while "enduring agony of displacement", sacrificed their lives, the senior BJP leader said in a post on X, "The dark day of 1947 reminds us of that cruel event when the citizens of the nation suffered the merciless pain of migration and, enduring inhuman torture, lost their homes, property, and lives." He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the tradition of observing this day to "keep the memory of the nation's partition alive is an important step toward nation-building." "Come, on this day, let us all citizens unite to pledge to maintain the unity and integrity of the nation and give a befitting reply to anti-national forces," the post added, calling for national unity. On August 14, India observes 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' to pay tribute to those who lost their lives and were displaced during the country's partition in 1947. India attained its freedom from British rule on 15th August, 1947. Independence Day , which is celebrated on 15th August every year, is a joyous and proud occasion for any nation; however, with the sweetness of freedom came also the trauma of partition. The birth of the newly independent Indian nation was accompanied by violent pangs of partition that left permanent scars on millions of Indians. The partition caused amongst the largest migrations in human history affecting about 20 million people. Millions of families had to abandon their ancestral villages/towns/cities and were forced to find a new life as refugees. The pain and violence of partition has remained deeply etched in the nation's memory. While celebrating our Independence, a grateful nation also salutes those sons and daughters of our beloved motherland who had to sacrifice their lives in the frenzy of violence. (ANI)
