Late penalty makes India's road to Asian Cup difficult
In 2024, Westwood did it with Afghanistan. On Tuesday, it was with Hong Kong who won 1-0 through an injury-time penalty.
'God willing, we will be in the Asian Cup,' said India skipper Sandesh Jhingan in the flash interview after the match. Without divine intervention, a third successive finals berth could look bleak. With Singapore beating Bangladesh 2-1, India are now last in the group and along with Pakistan the only team to have not scored after two rounds.
Pereira Stefan's penalty went in grazing the inside of the upright. But putting the defeat down to a coat of paint on the framework would paper over fundamental errors in both penalty boxes that cost India at a packed Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong whose retractable roof was closed to amplify the noise and which was inaugurated with this Group C match.
Iffy against Bangladesh, Vishal Kaith blundered by leaving his line leading to the goal. Michael Udebuluzor had three India players on him but Kaith advanced and punched the opponent instead of the ball. 'Clear penalty,' said India coach Manolo Marquez at the post-match press conference. Like with Bahrain in the 2019 Asian Cup finals, it meant another late heartbreak for India, this one coming in 90+4.
Marquez left Sunil Chhetri on the bench giving Ashique Kuruniyan the No.9 role against a team that at 153 was 26 places below India. Kuruniyan brought more energy but his misses summed up the long-standing Indian problem of a lack of strikers.
Plucked from playing sevens by Stephen Constantine, Kuruniyan has speed and a good work ethic but, possibly because he has missed most of the last two seasons due to injury, lacked sharpness in front of goal. And showed the world, he cannot trust his right foot at all.
Brandon Fernandes had stolen from Leon Jones and found Liston Colaco, who carried the ball and squared to Kuruniyan. With only goalkeeper Yapp Hung Fai to beat, Kuruniyan opted to go with his left foot and shanked the 35th minute effort. 'In a match of few chances, scoring first was important,' said Marquez.
Fifteen minutes later, Kuruniyan shot out on the half-turn after India had done well to play a sequence of passes and find their target man. An injury ended his night early and Chhetri came on in the 57th minute.
Poor decisions in the front third, once by Colaco and another by Naorem Mahesh Singh, though continued to hurt India. Chhetri found Colaco with a smart pass in the 80th minute only for the Mohun Bagan wide forward to sky his attempt from close. 'The team is not winning so players are a bit nervous,' said Marquez.
Anwar Ali's crucial interventions, sliding to take the ball away from Sung Min Him was the best of a good night, Suresh Wangjam's defensive work in the midfield and once Ashish Rai taking the ball away after Kaith was beaten meant India were not really troubled by Hong Kong. Fernandes's set-piece routines, and that of Colaco, were poor but India advanced the ball better than they did against Bangladesh.
'I cannot fault the attitude or effort of the players but while we want to win, we don't know how to draw,' said Marquez. The Spaniard bypassed the question on his future but will likely leave his post this month and renew with FC Goa for another season.

Shubman Gill unlikely for Asia Cup T20I with selectors keen on status quo ahead of Tuesday selection meeting
India's Test captain Shubman Gill might find it difficult to get into the Asia Cup T20 side, with selectors struggling to find a way to slot him into the squad of 15. The Indian team management and selectors are of the opinion that Gill at the moment doesn't fit into their T20 scheme of things. Which means there are chances of Gill not boarding a flight to Dubai as the Indian team management want to stick to players whom they have backed post the 2024 T20 World Cup. The Indian Express understands that the selectors will convey this to the Indian board bosses before the selection committee assembles on August 19, to make them aware of the situation. The Indian team will continue to be led by Suryakumar Yadav, who has cleared his fitness. It is understood that in a series of informal talks before the selection, there was discussion on Gill's inclusion in the playing eleven. If India's Test captain makes it in the squad the team management would have to open the innings with him. However, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson having done well in the top order, the team wants to stick with their tried and tested openers in whom they have invested so far. There was also a discussion informally on whether to drop Tilak Varma and accommodate Gill. However, the team management felt that it would be unfair on the left-handed batsman, who is holding the number two ranking in International Cricket Council (ICC) T20I's batting rankings. The team doesn't want Gill to be seen warming the bench. This means recent success in England, where a young Indian cricket team without stars earned a 2-2 draw, might not have much of an impact on the upcoming selection, given it's two different formats. ALSO READ | Empty slots: Players in contention for the last two spots for India in Asia Cup squad 'If Gill is included then he will straight away bat at the top and if he doesn't get a game then there is no point in having him. At the same time it will be unfair on Sanju, who did well in the past. If Gill gets in then Sanju might have to miss out and Jitesh might get a game,' a source in the BCCI informed. The Indian team management and selectors are looking at Mumbai's Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener. Jaiswal was part of the Indian team that won the 2024 World Cup but didn't get a game. There was an informal discussion whether to drop Jaiswal and pick Gill but it seems that the suggestion has been turned down. Gill's last appearance in T20I's came in July 2024 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele. India played a T20I series against Bangladesh at home followed by a tour to South Africa and later a home series against England. The selectors had not picked Gill in those three series that India played. However, with recent success in Test cricket, Gill is pushing his case hard for inclusion in white ball formats. In the IPL, Gill was the fourth highest run getter after Sai Sudharsan (759), Surya (717), Kohli (657) with 650 runs. Shreyas (604) and Jaiswal (559) were 6th and 7th respectively. With his success in the red ball format, the buzz had risen to make him the all-format captain of the Indian team. However, selectors are not jumping the gun after the England success and have decided to carry on with their old captain who is yet to lose a series in his leadership stint. The selectors and team management alongwith BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will have the final round of discussion on August 19. The Asia Cup will be played from September 9 to 28.

India squad for Asia Cup: Major gaps and possible changes as report makes big claim on Gill, Siraj
India's squad for Asia Cup could see some big changes, but Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj may still miss out. We take a look at the major gaps in the Indian T20I squad and possible changes. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors are set to have a tough time when they meet on Tuesday (19 August) to pick the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. A tough time because a lot has changed in Indian cricket since the last time they played T20Is against England in January-February this year. Shubman Gill, who was not a part of the T20I side, recently led the Indian Test team to a memorable 2-2 draw in England and is being seen as a frontrunner to make a comeback to the shortest format. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal could also come back. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer is touted by some as a certainty after guiding India to the Champions Trophy 2025 title win and the Punjab Kings to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 final. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here's a look at India's last T20I squad: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Ramandeep Singh, Arshdeep Singh This squad is expected to see some big changes. Gill, Siraj to miss out on Asia Cup? Kuldeep Yadav, who missed the England T20Is due to a back injury, is expected to replace Ravi Bishnoi, or both spinners could come in, and Washington Sundar may replace Ramandeep Singh. Shami will not be a part of the squad as he is not fully fit, but Jasprit Bumrah is set to come back. The openers – Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma – and Tilak Varma and Surykumar Yadav have sealed their spots in the top four. However, it will be interesting to see if Gill and Jaiswal are picked after an impressive Test series. Even if they are picked, will they straightaway get into the playing XI despite Samson and Sharma's heroics? A report in Cricibuzz says that while selectors may want to pick a third opener, Gill currently trails Jaiswal and none of them may get picked, or only Jaiswal might, unless Gambhir swings things in Gill's favour. It also states that the hero of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, pacer Mohammed Siraj, may not get a call back to the T20Is. Gaps in India's T20I squad And while selectors face the pressure of picking Gill, the two major spots to consider for them are that of an extra batter or an all-rounder and the third seamer. There's little clarity on these two spots. The third seamer could be one among Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna, as per Cricbuzz, while Arshdeep Singh is also a certainty. Also, there's room to include one more batter in the middle-order. In their last T20I, India had three all-rounders in the team – Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel. While Hardik and Axar don't face any pressure, Dube may be dropped. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The selectors have a chance here to add Iyer to the squad, but in such a case, Rinku Singh, who was also a part of the XI against England, may drop to the bench, at least, as management may want to include an all-rounder like Sundar to the playing XI. This is a big decision that the selectors have to make. If they decide to add a batter, players like Riyan Parag are also an option. India's possible Asia Cup squad: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill/Yashasvi Jaiswal/Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh

While cricket fans across the world are eagerly waiting for the high-voltage encounter, Jadhav believes the match will not take place at all. Speaking on the matter, the former Chennai Super Kings all-rounder said: "I think the Indian team should not play at all. As far as India is concerned, I think that wherever India plays, it will always win, but this match should not be played at all, and they will not play. I can say this with confidence ...
