Indian brands captured over 91 per cent of the smartwatch market in the January-March quarter (Q1), reaffirming their stronghold in the segment, a report showed on Monday.
Shipment of premium smartwatches, priced above Rs 15,000, grew by 16 per cent (on-year), highlighting a shift toward
feature-rich wearables
with precise health tracking.
A 2 per cent on-year recovery in 2025 is anticipated for the smartwatch market, fuelled by advancements in health tracking, according to the latest research from Counterpoint's IoT Service Research.
With budget-conscious buyers holding back, brands are now shifting focus toward the mid-range smartwatch segments, particularly models priced above Rs 5,000.
Senior research analyst Anshika Jain highlighted the evolving preferences of Indian smartwatch consumers, noting that buyers are increasingly prioritising quality and functional benefits over just low prices.
While cost remains a factor, users now prioritise precise health tracking, a smooth and intuitive interface, extended battery life, and enhanced performance in their smartwatches.
This shift toward value-driven choices has significantly boosted the premium smartwatch segment (Rs 15,000 and above), which witnessed a 16 per cent YoY growth, resulting in over 28 per cent YoY increase in the average selling price (ASP).
"More consumers are willing to invest in high-end models that offer advanced features, better build quality, and enhanced user experience," said Jain.
Additionally, OLED display penetration reached an all-time high of 37 per cent in Q1 2025, reflecting growing demand for vibrant, high-contrast screens that enhance readability and aesthetics.
"Smartwatches with display screens over 1.9 inches also saw increased adoption, as users preferred higher-resolution, bigger displays for better visibility and smoother interactions with the device," Jain noted.
As the market evolves, this trend highlights a broader industry pivot toward feature-rich, user-centric smartwatches that balance functionality with premium appeal.
Noise maintained its market leadership with a 29 per cent share, followed by boAt at the second position.
India's smartwatch market is projected to see moderate 2 per cent growth in 2025, following a market correction phase.

Rs 20,000 crore gone every year: Data shows how online gaming is burning a hole in Indians' pockets

Much against the arguments advanced by gaming companies opposing the ban on real-money gaming, the government estimates that nearly 45 crore people lose close to Rs 20,000 crore annually in online real-money gaming, according to data cited by an official source on Wednesday, as reported by TOI. The source said the government considers online money gaming to be a 'major problem for society' and has therefore decided to prioritise people's welfare over the revenue loss the exchequer will face as a result of the ban. 'There is a rough estimate that 45 crore people lose money every year. The total impact of the loss is estimated to be around Rs 20,000 crore,' the source was quoted as saying, on the day the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 was tabled and passed in the Lok Sabha. 'Every parliamentarian has raised concerns about the ill effects of online gaming involving money. Between revenue from one-third of the industry segment and social welfare, the government has chosen the welfare of society,' the source told TOI. The bill seeks to ban all forms of real-money gaming while promoting e-sports and online social gaming. According to the government, these segments account for nearly two-thirds of the industry and will now be supported through budgetary allocation, new schemes and the creation of a dedicated authority. The move, officials believe, will also generate new employment opportunities in the online gaming sector. Under the new legislation, state governments will be the primary enforcers of action against entities involved in money gaming. Any individual or company offering online money gaming services in violation of the rules could face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to Rs 1 crore, or both. Furthermore, those publishing advertisements in contravention of the law may be penalised with imprisonment of up to two years and/or a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh. A senior source told TOI that several real-money gaming platforms had been 'masquerading as games of skill' in order to distinguish themselves from gambling or betting. Importantly, the bill clarifies that players themselves will not be punished; instead, legal action will be directed at providers of money gaming platforms, payment facilitators and other government, according to TOI, has been attempting to regulate online money gaming for over three-and-a-half years. Previous efforts through the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime proved ineffective, as operators found ways to bypass regulations. A proposal for an independent regulatory body was also considered but reportedly failed due to conflicts of provisions in the new bill, officials emphasised, have been carefully drafted after years of deliberation and numerous complaints from both the public and elected representatives. BSE, Angel One shares slide up to 6% after Sebi chief calls for longer equity derivative tenures

Shares of capital-market-linked firms BSE and Angel One came under pressure on Thursday, falling up to 6% after Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey flagged the need to extend the tenure of equity derivatives contracts, a move that could alter trading dynamics in one of the world's busiest derivatives markets. ADVERTISEMENT BSE Ltd shares fell as much as 5.6% to Rs 2,381.10 on the NSE, while Angel One shares slid 4.6% to Rs 2,597. Speaking at the FICCI Annual Capital Market Conference in Mumbai, Pandey said, 'There is a need to increase the tenure of equity derivatives.' He said that a consultation paper will be issued on extending the maturities of such contracts. Pandey noted that a surge in derivatives trading, largely fueled by retail investors, has already led Sebi to limit the number of contract expiries and raise lot sizes to make trades more expensive. India accounts for nearly 60% of global equity derivatives volumes, but retail traders have faced steep losses. A Sebi study showed retail investors lost Rs 52,400 crore in the year ended March 31, 2024, compared with gross profits of Rs 33,000 crore for proprietary traders and Rs 28,000 crore for foreign regulator has recently tightened norms, including capping end-of-day exposure in options portfolios at Rs 1,500 crore. It is also weighing further restrictions on intraday index derivatives trading as part of efforts to contain systemic risks, people familiar with the matter told Reuters earlier this week. ADVERTISEMENT Pandey also said Sebi would work with the corporate affairs ministry and stock exchanges to build a regulated platform for information about pre-IPO firms.
