The slasher scandal of 1984 gets an update in Silent Night, Deadly Night remake teaser

Yahoo2 days ago
Terrifier 3 already saw Art The Clown ruin Christmas, but why stop there? The slasher business is booming, so it's as good a time as ever for Cineverse to bring back an old holiday horror: Silent Night, Deadly Night. Premiering December 12, the new film is billed as 'A reimagining of the controversial 1984 cult horror classic,' which scandalized audiences with its marketing campaign centered around a killer Santa Claus.
More than 40 years later, here's the synopsis for the Cineverse remake: 'When Billy witnesses his parents' grisly murder on Christmas Eve at the hands of Santa, it ignites a lifelong mission to spread holiday fear. Every Christmas, he dons the jolly red suit and delivers a blood-soaked massacre to feed his twisted sense of justice. This Christmas Eve, Billy wants to know: 'Have you been naughty?''
The Silent Night, Deadly Night teaser gets right to it with ax-wielding action and blood splattering on Santa's (fake) snow-white beard. Audiences are probably more desensitized to the shock of a killer Santa in 2025, but in 1984 parents protested that the depiction—even just in the marketing—was traumatizing for kids. The outcry ultimately led to the ads being pulled from the press and later the film being pulled from theaters. Critics didn't dig it either, with Gene Siskel calling out everyone involved with making the movie and declaring 'Shame on you' on At The Movies. In 2012, The A.V. Club's Noel Murray had a milder view, observing it was 'as run-of-the-mill a slasher film as the '80s produced, enjoyable today primarily for its kitsch value.'
Despite the controversy or the quality, the film was successful enough to spawn four sequels and a 'slick but soulless' (in Murray's words) remake starring Malcolm McDowell, Jaime King, and Donal Logue. Cineverse's new take stars Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends) as Billy, with an ensemble cast that includes Ruby Modine, Mark Acheson, David Lawrence Brown, and David Tomlinson. We'll see where this one fits into the Silent Night pantheon.

New Niagara Falls attraction reaches for the stars

They've brought you to see the animals in Africa and Australia, digitally. Now, the owners of Hologram Zoo Niagara want to send you to space. The Space Experience is an immersive installation that brings visitors to the stars using the same holographic technology as the virtual zoo, which opened in June. Developed by Australian-based company Axiom Holographics, the attraction will create the illusion of travelling at warp speed, visiting the International Space Station and seeing a supernova up close, along with projections of the eight planets. It's at the same location as the Hologram Zoo — the corner of Victoria Avenue and Bender Street, across from Casino Niagara. Owner Marty Speelman says it's the first of several themed shows coming to the venue. 'The plan was always that every four or five months to introduce a new show,' he says. 'There's always revolving content. There's a Halloween show coming, a Christmas show coming, seasonal content as well.' As visitors walk through the attraction, motion-tracked projections and layered lighting create a sense of movement and depth around them. It makes people feel part of the environment, not just passersby, says Speelman. 'You do things like go through the tail of comet, see a star being born, you do a space walk, all those kinds of things.' While designing it, Axiom consulted with astronomers and science educators for accuracy. A narrator explains what people are seeing without 'overwhelming' detail. Speelman says the Hologram Zoo is off to a solid start, despite its location away from the main tourist hub. 'Everyone who comes through has been loving it,' he says. 'The challenge for us is, we're not on Clifton Hill. We're a couple-minute walk away. It's just getting people to know that we're there. 'We have a mix of social media marketing and we have a staff person out on the street handing out flyers.' Axiom's head of Canadian business development, John Jackson, says there are plans to open between 30 and 40 hologram zoos throughout Canada. The Space Experience is making its Canadian debut in Niagara Falls. Admission to the Space Experience is $19.99 to $24.99, with combo prices available for both attractions.

Retailers launch Halloween early amid tariff fears

It's still swimsuit season — but the giant skeletons are already stirring this Summerween. Why it matters: Big-box retailers — including Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart and Costco — are moving early on Halloween as tariffs threaten to raise prices and fuel even more urgency among consumers. Halloween is big money for retailers, which is why Summerween has turned the spooky season into a summer shopping event. Last year's holiday sales were projected to reach $11.6 billion, according to the National Retail Federation's annual survey. The big picture: The October holiday is one of the seasonal events most affected by tariffs, with the majority of Halloween items imported from China. The Halloween and Costume Association warned in April that tariffs were threatening to "wipe out Halloween and severely disrupt Christmas." "With tariffs potentially driving up costs later this year, many shoppers are buying now to get ahead," Stephanie Carls, RetailMeNot retail insights expert, told Axios. "Shoppers know if they wait, the best items might be gone or more expensive." Home Depot Halloween collection adds Ultra Skelly Driving the news: Home Depot said Tuesday it will launch its full Halloween collection online on Aug. 4, and in stores ahead of Labor Day. The Atlanta-based home improvement store is adding several new additions to Skelly's family, like a 5-foot dog and cat, Aubrey Horowitz, Home Depot's decorative holiday merchant, told Axios. There's also a new 6.5-foot skeleton called "Ultra Skelly" that is app-controlled and animated that will sell for $279. Lowe's stores already have Halloween Zoom in: Lowe's told Axios all Halloween collections are now available on its website, and an early in-store launch started July 15. The Halloween collection is rolling out to stores in August, with the full in-store reset set for Aug. 11-22. The full online assortment will be refreshed by Aug. 25, Lowe's confirmed. Summerween trend at Walmart, Target, more The intrigue: Walmart told Axios in June that around 1,000 of its stores nationwide added Halloween displays with products ranging from $1 to $10. Michaels launched two of its five Halloween collections on July 25 and its last is planned for Aug. 15. T.J. Maxx and Dollar Tree have also launched Halloween merchandise early in stores and Target 's whole collection is available to preview online. Behind the scare: Halloween and tariffs State of play: The looming impact of tariffs on goods from China — including seasonal décor — is one reason why retailers have been front-loading inventory.
