Azad Engineering opens exclusive facility for GE Vernova works in Hyderabad

The Hindu29-04-2025

Hyderabad-based precision engineering firm Azad Engineering inaugurated a 7,600 sq. mts. exclusive lean manufacturing facility at its new plant in Tunikibollaram here to focus on global major GE Vernova's Steam Power Services business.
This facility will serve and support the supply of highly engineered and complex rotating and stationary airfoils for advanced nuclear, industrial and thermal power turbine engines, meeting GE Vernova's global demand in the power generation and essential industries, Azad Engineering said.
Established at Azad's Centre of Excellence & Innovation Centre in the city, the facility marks the evolution of a partnership with GE Vernova that began with a few machines in 2013 into a world-class manufacturing centre, demonstrating the companies shared commitment to excellence, it said after the inauguration on Tuesday (April 29, 2025) in which Rakesh Chopdar, chairman and CEO and GE Vernova's senior global leadership team participated.
The new facility is part of Azad Engineering's broader strategy to create manufacturing capacity to meet the needs of key global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) partners at its COE & Innovation Centre, Mr. Chopdar said. 'With over 180 direct skilled professionals currently employed and plans to add several hundred more, we are creating a robust ecosystem of precision engineering excellence to produce around 1,00,000 blades per annum from this factory. The rigorous qualification processes we've undergone, achieving precision tolerances measured in microns, reflect Azad's dedication to meeting the exacting standards of global industry...', he said in a release.
Without disclosing specifics, the company said the new lean manufacturing facility is a significant investment in expanding Azad's manufacturing capabilities as part of its strategic focus on long-term partnerships with global OEMs across aerospace, defence, energy as well as oil and gas sectors. It is poised to consolidate the company's position as a key player in the precision manufacturing landscape, Azad said.
This is the second such facility it opened recently. In March, the company had opened a 7,200 sq. mts. exclusive lean manufacturing facility for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in Tunikibollaram with about 200 skilled professionals.

Lenskart changes status to public company in preparation for $1 billion IPO

ETtech Piyush Bansal, CEO, Lenskart Omnichannel eyewear brand Lenskart has converted itself into a public company as it prepares for a public listing, changing its registered name from Lenskart Solutions Private Limited to Lenskart Solutions Limited through a special resolution passed by its shareholders. This comes at a time when Lenskart is considering raising a $1 billion public offering at a potential $10 billion valuation, double that of its last funding round. The transition to a public company is a necessary step before filing its IPO papers. The Gurugram-based company closed a $200 million secondary round in June last year at a $5 billion valuation, with investments from Singapore's sovereign fund Temasek and US financial services giant Fidelity. In July 2024, Lenskart founders Peyush Bansal, Neha Bansal, Amit Choudhary, and Sumeet Kapahi had invested almost $20 million in the company. On February 17, ET reported that the company has set its sights on filing draft papers in May, contingent on market conditions. However, the omnichannel eyewear retailer is yet to file its draft papers. Lenskart, which won the ET Startup Awards last year, has hit an annual revenue run rate of $1 billion (Rs 8,400 crore). The company produces 25 million frames and 30–40 million lenses annually and operates over 2,500 stores across India and Southeast Asia, maintaining a strong online presence. Lenskart's conversion into a public company was first reported by the news website Entrackr. With this, the SoftBank-backed company joins startups like Shiprocket, Zetwerk, PhysicsWallah, Boat, Bluestone, and others that are preparing for IPOs. Since its inception, Lenskart has closed nearly $2 billion in funding, including secondary FY24, Lenskart's net loss shrank to Rs 10 crore from Rs 64 crore in FY23, which the company attributed to technology-driven operational efficiencies. Operating revenue rose 43% to Rs 5,428 crore, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda) more than doubled to Rs 856 crore. It is yet to file financial statements for 2024-25 with the Registrar of Companies (RoC).

Alleged Iran Money Laundering Network Hit With US Sanctions

The US imposed sanctions on a network of individuals and companies it accuses of laundering billions of dollars from illegal activities for the Iranian government, as the Trump administration continues its 'maximum pressure' campaign against Tehran. The Treasury Department said the penalties target more than 30 individuals, as well as 16 companies based in Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. 'Iran's shadow banking system is a critical lifeline for the regime through which it accesses the proceeds from its oil sales, moves money, and funds its destabilizing activities,' Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. The Treasury announcement names Iran's Zarringhalam brothers — Mansour, Nasser, and Fazlolah — as facilitators behind the network that gives sanctioned Iranian individuals and organizations access to the international financial system. It allegedly operates as a parallel banking system, where Iran-based exchange houses broker settlements through front companies in Hong Kong and the UAE. 'The United States will continue to deny Iran access to financial networks and the global banking system as long as Iran continues its destabilizing activities,' the State Department said in a separate statement on the sanctions. The Trump administration has imposed several rounds of sanctions on Iran even as negotiations for a nuclear deal continue. Tensions are mounting ahead of a still-unscheduled next round of talks, with President Donald Trump declaring the US won't allow Iran to pursue uranium enrichment, and Tehran slamming a US nuclear deal proposal for being ambiguous. At a briefing on Thursday, a State Department spokesperson encouraged Iran to agree with the proposal. 'It is in their best interest to accept it,' said principal deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott. 'We've also been clear, again and again and again, that the Iranian regime can never have a nuclear weapon.'
