OPEN// Egypt's mining sector attracts foreign partners

Middle East15-05-2025

MARSA ALAM, Egypt, May 15 (MENA) - Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli on Thursday described the scale of heavy machinery used in mining operations at the Sukari Gold Mine, valued at approximately $235 million, alongside the $2 billion investment by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), as key factors in attracting foreign partners to invest in this highly important sector.
Touring the site, he explained that such partners possess both the capacity to fund major operations and the expertise to execute them effectively.
The premier noted that his meeting with AngloGold Ashanti officials earlier in the day yielded important outcomes regarding the start of commercial production at the site.
Company representatives confirmed that Sukari is among the world's top 20 gold mines and is highly valued due to its favorable extraction conditions compared to other sites.
They also revealed that new exploratory operations are underway and that additional reserves have been confirmed.
Madbouli stressed the government's commitment to encouraging the entry of more companies like AngloGold Ashanti to further develop the mining sector.
He praised the scale and quality of work being carried out at the site and highlighted the CEO's commendation of Egyptian workers and their technical skills. This, he said, motivates the government to introduce incentives to empower more Egyptian talent in this vital industry.
The premier thanked all company workers, especially the notable number of women at the site, including the region's first female CEO of a mining and exploration company, who is Egyptian.
The accompanying MPs and senators praised the efforts made at the mine, commending the professionalism of operations at every stage of gold production.
Managing Director and Vice Chair of Sukari Gold Mining Company Hoda Mansour expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for being the first in office to visit the site. (MENA)

Al Mashat Announces Egypt's Selection to Benefit from CIF's Industrial Decarbonization Program with $1 Billion Funding

Basant Ahmed Dr. Rania A. Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, announced Egypt's selection among 7 countries out of 26 applicants to benefit from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Industrial Decarbonization Program. This program is the first global development financing initiative dedicated to reducing harmful emissions in the industrial sector of developing countries, with a value of $1 billion. Dr. Al-Mashat pointed out that the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, in its role of fostering economic relations with international institutions and development partners, submitted Egypt's proposal in collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), and the African Development Bank (AfDB). This submission was based on Egypt's ambitious vision for transitioning to a green economy, reducing emissions, robust institutional capabilities, and the active participation of both domestic and foreign private sectors, particularly through development financing. Minister Al-Mashat added that Egypt's selection among the 7 countries underscores the international community's confidence in the national strategies and efforts exerted to enhance climate action. This selection also represents a significant step towards boosting the competitiveness of the Egyptian economy and attracting more climate investments. She highlighted that the Egyptian government is working to integrate national policies and development goals with climate objectives, aiming to advance the implementation of green transformation-incentivizing policies in cooperation with international institutions. Dr. Al-Mashat emphasized that Egypt has intensified its climate action efforts, particularly since hosting COP27 in November 2022. During this conference, Egypt launched the "NWFE" program country platform, a pioneering initiative that has received unprecedented international support and continuous commendations for its role in encouraging climate investments through partnerships among the government, international institutions, and the private sector. The CIF confirmed that the 7 selected countries (Egypt, Brazil, Mexico, Namibia, South Africa, Turkey, and Uzbekistan) were chosen based on an independent expert team's assessment. The program aims to support low-emission industrial transformation and create green jobs, thereby enhancing the long-term economic competitiveness of participating countries and qualifying them to benefit from the global market for eco-friendly goods, which is projected to reach $2 trillion by 2030. This program is part of the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) under the CIF, which has a total value of $9 billion. It leverages the CIF's private capital mobilization mechanism, which is the first of its kind in mobilizing private capital to support countries' sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development priorities. Tariye Gbadegesin, CEO of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), stated, "The global race to decarbonize the industrial sector has begun, and emerging markets are leading the way. Decarbonizing industry is not just about cutting emissions, it is also about securing long-term prosperity and future jobs. It is vital to produce the low-carbon industrial inputs the world urgently needs to scale renewable energy capacity and power the global economy." It is worth noting that in November 2022, during the COP27 climate conference in Sharm El Sheikh, H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat announced that Egypt's bid ranked first among countries in the North Africa and Europe region in the CIF's Nature, People, and Climate Investment initiative. Through this initiative, CIF provides $500 million in support for implementing projects in developing member countries. Technical discussions are underway between the Ministry, relevant entities, and CIF to leverage this initiative by funding a number of projects under the "NWFE" program in areas such as climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness and agricultural finance, coastal ecosystem restoration, and stimulating private sector participation as a common pillar. The seven selected countries are expected to collaborate with multilateral development banks and private sector partners to develop investment plans for approval by the CIF board. These plans will enable countries to access highly concessional financing to scale up the adoption of clean technologies, such as green hydrogen and low-carbon industries, to achieve a global energy transition. The program provides developing countries with access to development financing, attracts investments for climate transformation projects, and creates green job opportunities. This program is part of the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) under the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), which has a total value of $9 billion. It relies on the fund's private capital market mechanism, which is the first of its kind in mobilizing private capital to support countries' sustainable, inclusive, and resilient development priorities. For every dollar invested by the Clean Technology Fund, $12 in additional financing is generated. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Grand Egyptian Museum Delays Opening Amid Regional Developments

Originally set for July 3, the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum is now postponed to the last quarter of 2025. Jun 14, 2025 The long-anticipated official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) has been postponed, with a new date expected in the final quarter of 2025. Originally slated for July 3, the delay comes in response to 'current regional developments', according to a statement released by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on June 14. The decision is positioned as a strategic and symbolic one, intended to ensure that the inaugural ceremony reflects the scale and significance of Egypt's cultural legacy. Officials emphasized that Egypt remains committed to hosting a global event that befits the grandeur of its ancient heritage and the international standing of the Grand Egyptian Museum. Since opening its doors in a limited capacity earlier this year, the museum has welcomed visitors under a 'soft opening' model that has already drawn international attention. These previews have offered glimpses into its vast exhibition halls, monumental atrium, and immersive storytelling approach. The official inauguration, however, remains a critical milestone—one that Egyptian authorities hope to reframe as a message of unity and cultural continuity in turbulent times. More information on the revised inauguration date will be announced following coordination with relevant stakeholders, ensuring that the global debut of the Grand Egyptian Museum lives up to its historical weight.

The Cabinet's Media Center released a set of infographics via its social media platforms, outlining Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly's key engagements for the week of June 7–13. These activities included a series of meetings, follow-ups, and high-level discussions addressing vital national issues. They featured a meeting, chaired by Madbouli, to discuss the investment plan for the healthcare sector over the next 10 years. During the meeting, Madbouli instructed that available investment opportunities be presented to the private sector, supported by clear partnership mechanisms, the 'golden license' and standardized contracts. The meeting also reviewed over 75 key investment opportunities in the healthcare sector. The premier also chaired a meeting to follow up on the government's efforts and preparations to announce the elimination of leprosy in Egypt. He called for intensified efforts to reach zero leprosy cases while ensuring comprehensive care for recovered patients and the necessary social and financial support. In this regard, the Health Ministry will provide integrated services, such as early detection and treatment, through the Leprosy Control Department under the Preventive Medicine Sector. The infographics also highlighted a meeting to follow up on the trial operation of the Pyramids Visit System Development Project. The meeting took up steps taken to provide services to visitors within the archaeological site. It also addressed efforts to prevent unauthorized vehicle access to the site and outlined plans to protect antiquities by establishing a designated parking area near the Visitor Center and introducing an environmentally friendly transportation system relying on electric buses within the archaeological site. Madbouli also chaired a meeting of the Higher Committee responsible for organizing the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)'s opening celebration. A report was presented on the progress of transportation projects in the museum's vicinity, and it was noted that the Engineering Authority has finalized all assigned tasks within the project scope. Among other activities was a meeting to follow up on plans and procedures to expand seawater desalination projects and localize related industries. The premier stated that the target is to produce around 9 million cubic meters of desalinated water per day. Several projects currently being studied by 'ACWA Power' were reviewed during the meeting. A separate meeting was convened to review the plan for maintaining adequate reserves of petroleum products and natural gas in light of recent regional developments. Madbouli stressed that the government has a comprehensive action plan to meet the needs of various sectors, particularly the electricity sector. He further explained that the government is targeting the operation of three regasification ships, starting from early July, with a combined capacity of 2,250 million cubic feet per day. He instructed the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to fast-track the launch of the three regasification vessels. He also noted that gas shipment contracts are in place and that fuel oil reserves and stocks are available, alongside ongoing efforts to ensure the availability of all petroleum products.
