Want cheaper butter? Get on board with the vegan agenda

Even if you're not ready to cut animal products out of your own diet, you can help by encouraging others – because lower demand means lower prices.
With butter nearing $20 per kilogram, New Zealanders are wondering what might be done. Nicola Willis has proposed breaking up the supermarket duopoly. That would offer some relief, but it fails to address the root cause: global demand for dairy. Willis has rightly recognised that the New Zealand government has little control over global trends. But there is something simple each of us can do to improve the situation, even if only in a small way.
We need to get on board with the vegan agenda.
Don't worry: I'm not suggesting you adopt a vegan diet. On a personal level, the case is not always compelling. Vegans' grocery bills may be lower. Their diets healthier – although all diets incur micro-nutrient trade-offs. Vegans may even be slightly happier than average. However, veganism can be a tender topic, especially when making dinner plans with omnivores. If you're struggling to make ends meet, passing up the venison mince at the local foodbank can be a real sacrifice. Realistically, veganism's main selling point is alignment between values and actions. If your values align with animal exploitation and waterway pollution, then veganism may not be your cup of nutritional yeast.
But the more vegans there are, the better for everyone else. Think about it: would you rather share a plate of filet mignon and black pepper tofu with a vegan or an omnivore? Unless you're concerned about your share of the tofu, then you should stake your bets on a vegan.
Of course, sharing a plate is different from sharing the global food system. Instead of changing the demand (who we are sharing with) we can change supply (what is on the plate). If we increase the supply of dairy, prices will fall.
Such reasoning may get an A in economics 101, where the only difference between dairy and computer software is the label in the spreadsheet. But increasing dairy production has real implications for land use. We badly need space for the Amazon rainforest, for peatlands, for indigenous New Zealand rewilding. A global expansion of dairy production is not feasible. It might lower prices in the very short term. But, last I checked, current technology has not yet solved the problem of milking a cow during a wildfire or flood.
Of course, the relationship between supply and demand is also more complex than the textbook formula that lower demand leads to lower prices. However, it holds as a general principle. If you want to enjoy affordable butter, a good way is to reduce demand for dairy.
A drop in global dairy demand would be bad news for the New Zealand dairy industry. This is a familiar problem in environmental policy. People are much more willing to pay for products such as butter than for environmentally helpful practices such as rewilding. The only viable solution is to create a funding mechanism to compensate farmers for greener pastures. If the price of butter fell to $10 per kg, but consumers paid $5 into a rewilding fund, this could be a win-win for farmers and butter eaters. Reducing consumption frees up money to invest in our environment.
You should, then, throw yourself whole-heartedly behind the vegan agenda. You can't personally make much of an impact at a global scale. But social movements happen when large numbers of people make small changes.
When a friend tells you they want to be vegan, do not roll your eyes and flood them with misinformation about nutrition. Instead, thank them for their service. Cook them a vegan meal. It can be as simple as vegetable pasta. You can help yourself to a double portion of parmesan if you like. Your guest is not having any.
One major obstacle for veganism is the bizarre perception that it is effeminate. Even though it's 2025, this turns people off. Help us undo this by talking about vegan alpha males such as Alec Baldwin (wait, maybe not the best example?) and Joaquin Phoenix. Introduce them to vegan athletes such as TJ Perenara and Lewis Hamilton. Emphasise the 'masculine side' of veganism: the inner resolve, the power of reason over the smell of bacon, the capacity to tear the head off a raw broccoli with one's canines.
And above all, annoy your friends with the case for veganism. Reductions in animal cruelty, space for wilderness, and the continued survival of humanity are pretty persuasive. You might just convert some of them. The high price of butter is a sign that we are running out of space. We need all the vegans we can get.

As a New Zealand citizen it is reassuring to hear the announcement today that the USA FBI has the go ahead from New Zealand government to set up an 'FBI Enforcement Office' to be based in Wellington, New Zealand. The USA and most likely the United Kingdom, must have recognised the need for New Zealand to have a helping hand to establish, implement and monitoring the threats arising from organised and trans-national crime. An examination of New Zealand's infrastructure to adequately fight, monitor or report on such crimes is, almost, non-existent. In other words, New Zealand Government is well-behind in its knowledge-base and technology systems to adequately protect its citizens or guide the Pacific Island nations, on how to manage the risks from organised crime and transnational crime. The announcement by USA FBI Chief, Kash Patel, confirmed the focus of this NZ based FBI unit was to ensure stability and peace in the Pacific Island region. There was mention of the need to manage monitoring of risks arising from the increasing presence of State China and State Indo-China in the Pacific Islands region. Mr Patel aligned these risks to narcotics trafficking and other type trans-national crime offending. The objectives of this unit will be positive news to the people of the Pacific Island communities. Hopefully the NZ-USA FBI Unit will also capture New Zealand across its web of countries that it starts monitoring and enforcing against. This would be a significant benefit to New Zealand's citizens. But there are many questions that sill need answering. What laws in New Zealand will this NZ-USA FBI Unit draw its powers from? Where will its data servers be based? How will citizen privacy information be managed and sharing of information from NZ to the USA government led unit? Let's see what eventuates but I am confident this news today is positive for all law abiding New Zealanders and the community members in the Pacific Island region.

Operators will be able to apply for new petroleum exploration permits as early as September following the third reading of the Crown Minerals Amendment Bill, Resources Minister Shane Jones says. The Bill removes the ban on oil and gas exploration beyond onshore Taranaki, better aligns decommissioning settings with international practice, establishes a new tier of permit to undertake small-scale non-commercial gold mining, and signals the Coalition Government's intent to reinvigorate investment in Crown-owned minerals. 'This Government is pragmatic about the vital role natural gas will play in our energy mix in the decades ahead and we have set a course for greater energy security backed by our own indigenous reserves,' Mr Jones says. 'The ill-fated exploration ban in 2018 has exacerbated shortages in our domestic gas supply by obliterating new investment in the exploration and development needed to meet our future gas needs. Reserves are also falling faster than anticipated. 'New Zealanders are bearing the brunt of this constrained gas supply, and energy security concerns are impacting investor sentiment. These factors are taking a toll on our economic growth and prosperity. 'We are seeing businesses in the regions closing as a result with Kiwis losing their jobs, and we're importing hundreds of tonnes of Indonesian coal to meet peak energy demand. 'This legislation is just one of many actions we are taking to get the right settings in place to resuscitate sector confidence, shore up energy supply and protect electricity affordability.' During the progression of the Bill, a gap was identified in the existing Crown Minerals Act that relates to liability for the costs of decommissioning petroleum infrastructure. In certain circumstances, parent companies of permit-holders could sell their shares without remaining responsible for the costs of decommissioning old petroleum infrastructure, exposing the Crown to fiscal risk. 'Together with changes to the decommissioning regime that better balance regulatory burden and risk to give operators the clarity they need to invest in exploration and development wells, we have introduced ministerial discretion to assign liability for decommissioning costs to former permit-holders and others who have held interests in a permit,' Mr Jones says. 'We recognise that a one-size-fits-all approach for every scenario not only erodes investor confidence, it also doesn't allow us to best manage risk. 'I want those who benefited from having an interest in a petroleum permit to pay for decommissioning the relevant infrastructure. While financial securities remain at the core, the new approach to assigning liability will ensure the most appropriate person will remain responsible for costs if the current permit-holder cannot meet their obligations and financial securities are insufficient.' Most of the changes through the Bill will take effect immediately, while others will require staged implementation and secondary legislation. All changes will be operational by the end of September 2025.

'Last night ACT proposed a series of common-sense amendments to Labour MP Camilla Belich's broken Employment Relations (Employee Remuneration Disclosure) Amendment Bill, to make it more workable for businesses and employees entering into voluntary agreements with one another,' says ACT's Small Business spokesperson Laura McClure. 'The Bill, without clear rationale, inserts the Government into every employment agreement in the country – telling workers and employers that they are unable to freely come to mutually beneficial agreements that work for them. 'This raises serious privacy concerns, diminishes workplace flexibility, and poses a real risk to harmony in the workplace by encouraging resentment and comparison between colleagues. It also threatens commercially sensitive information and creates legal uncertainty for employers trying to do the right thing. 'ACT did not support the Bill, which undermines the freedom of consenting adults to form contracts, but my colleague Dr Parmjeet Parmar and I proposed practical amendments to minimise the harm it would cause.' The changes ACT proposed included: Restricting disclosure rights to within the same workplace – so employees could only disclose their own remuneration to colleagues who work for the same organisation, not to competitors, journalists, or the wider public. Protecting employee privacy – by prohibiting an employee from disclosing another employee's pay without that person's express consent. Preventing bad-faith disclosures – by ensuring only disclosures made in good faith are protected, so that attempts to weaponise pay information to harm employers or other staff aren't shielded by law. Excluding performance-based pay – such as bonuses and commissions from the definition of 'remuneration', recognising that these are often highly individualised, sensitive, and commercially confidential. Delaying the Bill's commencement by 12 months – to give businesses and industry bodies time to understand the law, adapt policies, and educate their members. 'These amendments would have preserved a worker's ability to disclose their own pay while protecting the privacy of others and the ability of businesses to operate fairly and competitively. Labour, National and the Greens refused to support any of them," says McClure. 'ACT believes in freedom of contract, the right to privacy, and the value of trusting people to make their own arrangements. This Bill tramples on all three. New Zealanders deserve better than another law that treats adults like children and businesses like villains.'
