Mevani attacks BJP over atrocities on Dalits, weaker sections in Gujarat

Indian Express07-06-2025
Congress's Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani on Saturday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah's silence on alleged incidents of atrocities against Dalits, adivasis and other weaker sections in Gujarat, and announced that the party will hit the streets to raise the issue.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters in the Capital, Mevani accused the PM, the Home Minister and the RSS of 'putting the values of Manusmriti above the Constitution'.
Citing the low conviction rate in cases of atrocities on Dalits, Mevani said at the national level, this figure is 30-35%, but in Gujarat it is only 3-5%, which means 95% of the culprits in the state go scot-free.
The Congress leader told reporters that several incidents of Dalit atrocities have been reported from Gujarat such as the murder of a 19-year-old Dalit youth in Amreli, the alleged setting ablaze of a Dalit senior citizen in Patan and the alleged gangrape of a Dalit girl in which BJP members are alleged to have been involved.
'The Congress is preparing to launch a massive demonstration in August-September against atrocities being afflicted on Dalits, adivasis and those from the weakened sections in Gujarat,' he announced.

MIM slams NCERT changes, role of RSS

1 2 Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the BJP govt at the Centre should include the book 'Muslims Against Partition' by Shamsul Islam in the NCERT-recommended syllabi. "This lie about partition is repeated time and again. At that time, not even 2–3% of Muslims had the right to vote. Only elitists such as zamindars and jagirdars were enfranchised. Even today, they (RSS and BJP) blame us (Muslims) for the partition of the country. How were we responsible for that? Those who fled, fled. Those who were loyal, stayed," he said. Responding to media queries regarding proposed changes to the NCERT syllabus concerning the partition of the country, he stated that the RSS was never part of India's freedom struggle and did not participate in the Quit India Movement, the Salt Satyagraha, or other agitations. "Why don't they include in the NCERT syllabus that the RSS hated freedom fighters more than the British did? The RSS always sided with the British. Let them teach students all of this as well. No, they only want to spread hatred against Muslims," Owaisi alleged. He claimed the RSS never participated in the independence movement. "The RSS's Hindutva ideology has always been contrary to the Constitution. It was wrong for the PM to praise an organisation that spreads hatred in the country," he asserted. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Some governors acting like mafia hitmen against citizens: Tushar Gandhi

T'puram: Criticizing the role of governors, Tushar Gandhi , the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi , said that some governors are like hitmen used by mafias against citizens. "There are two types of governors in the country. One type is sent to BJP-ruled states to enjoy a retired life. The second type is sent to opposition-ruled states with instructions to disrupt governance. These governors act as super vice-chancellors and disrupt higher education, forgetting their duties to protect the Constitution and improve democracy," Gandhi said. Gandhi's remarks came while he was inaugurating a national seminar organized by the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad here on the challenges faced by universities. "The educated upper class in India is becoming more irrational, falling victim to the false propaganda experiments conducted by communal forces. They have been made to believe that Hindus are in danger and will soon be wiped out. These forces ensure that the majority supports any atrocities they commit, paving the way for the persecution of minorities," he said. The education system, which lacks rational thinking and promotes enslavement, aids this process, Gandhi added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He said that Centre's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 maintains a flawed perspective on education and creates a system that further enslaves students. "Today's education hides realities, eliminates rational thinking, and fosters a slave mentality, becoming a tool to propagate the interests of those in power. People in every region must take responsibility to counter these issues. States should have the right to develop their educational systems, creating an education model that aligns with their culture and region," Gandhi said. NCERT module row: ‘Congress in pain because truth of Partition coming out,' says BJP

The Congress on Saturday accused the ruling BJP of 'interfering' with the functioning of the institutions and 'distorting' the country's history after a special module, released by the NCERT to mark 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day', held Jinnah, the Congress, and then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for India's Partition. Calling the Congress the 'Rahul-Jinnah party', BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia took on Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and alleged that his thinking was similar to that of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) The BJP on Saturday slammed the Congress for questioning the NCERT's module on the Partition of India and said the opposition party is in pain because the 'truth' has been brought out. Replying to media queries on the issue, Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that the partition had taken place due to the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League. He also took on the RSS, calling it the 'biggest villain' in the country's history. Hitting back, Bhatia said the Congress is in pain because the NCERT has brought a 'bitter truth' of India's Partition out for the students to study. 'The Rahul-Jinnah party was the first to feel the pain. And it won't be wrong to say that Jinnah and Rahul have the same thinking. Both have become synonymous with each other,' he told reporters at the BJP headquarters here. 'Jinnah had a poisonous thinking of appeasement and communalism. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress have the same thinking,' he charged. The BJP spokesperson said it is the right of the people to know why the Partition took place and whose failure it was. It happened because the 'ambition of the Congress and its leader' had taken precedence over national interest, he said without naming anyone. 'We all know that 'akhand Bharat' was partitioned on the basis of religion. This black spot in our history was a gift from the Congress,' he said. Bhatia said that while the people of the country and the BJP believe that the country should be run by the Constitution, the Congress thinks it should be run by Sharia law. 'Jinnah also said that there should be Sharia law. The Congress says that the reservation should be given to people on the basis of religion. This is what Jinnah also said,' he added. On the attack on the RSS, Bhatia said, 'Those who always betrayed India are raising questions on such a patriotic organisation whose aim is to preserve the heritage of India and make it stronger.'
