Informing about the demise of Muthu due to old age, the state government said his body will be kept at the Gopalapuram residence of late Karunanidhi for the public to pay their respects. His last rites will be performed this evening, the release said.
The news that the eldest son of Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) family, my dear brother M K Muthu, passed away struck me like a thunderbolt this morning. The grief of losing my beloved brother, who showed me affection on par with my mother and father, torments me, Stalin said.
Karunanidhi named him Muthu in memory of his father Muthuvel.
Like Kalaignar, brother Muthu contributed to the Dravidian movement through plays from his youth. He had his own unique style in acting, dialogue delivery, and body language. Due to such energy and enthusiasm, he entered the film industry in 1970. He played a double role in his first film, the Chief Minister said in a post on the social media platform X'.
Muthu is eternally remembered in the hearts of Tamil fans through the films: Pillaiyo Pillai, Pookari, Samayalakaran, and Anayavilakku, he said.
He had a special quality that many actors do not have. He had the ability to sing songs in his own voice sweetly. The song 'Nalla Manathil Kudiyirikkum Nagoor Andava' and the song 'Sonthakaaranga Enakku Romba Perunga' are songs that many people still cannot forget, he said.
He was always affectionate towards him and always encouraged him, Stalin said and added though his brother was no more he would always live in people's hearts through art, songs, and music.

Keezhadi excavation report under review, time bracket not justified: Minister
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has not requested any 'revised report' on the Keezhadi (or Keeladi) excavations in Tamil Nadu, the Centre informed Parliament Monday, but said the report is 'under review' and as per suggestions of experts the nomenclatures of the three periods mentioned in it 'require change'. Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the time bracket of 8th-5th century BCE given for Period 1 in the report was 'not justified at all'. 'For the earliest period in the present state of our knowledge we can, at the maximum, suggest it originates somewhere in pre-300 BC,' he said in an annexure attached with the response to a question by DMK MP T Sumathy. Keezhadi is an ancient site in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district, about 12 km from Madurai. Over a decade ago, Amarnath Ramakrishna, ASI's then Superintending Archaeologist, led excavations at the site that unearthed evidence of a sophisticated urban society. According to the Keezhadi report, carbon dating had revealed the objects to be over 2,160 years old, corresponding to the Sangam era in Tamil history. It classified the site's history into three periods — Pre-Early Historic (8th-5th century BCE), Mature Early Historic (5th-1st century BCE) and Early Historic (1st century BCE-3rd century CE). The report triggered a controversy between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the NDA-ruled Centre, after the ASI, which comes under the Union Ministry of Culture, asked Ramakrishna to review his report. The DMK saw this as an attempt by the Centre to pressure Ramakrishna to 'change' his findings. DMK MP Sumathy had asked the Ministry if the Keezhadi report prepared was officially reviewed by the Government after submission in June 2025, seeking details of the specific deficiencies cited by the Government or ASI leading to its rejection. In his reply, Shekhawat said: 'Keezhadi excavation has been conducted under the aegis of ASI and a report of lead archaeologist is under review. The comments of experts have been shared with the lead archaeologist, which are still to be finalised.' However, the minister added, 'there is no practice of rejecting a report'. In the annexure, which details excerpts from experts' observations, on the basis of which Ramakrishna has been asked to review the report, Shekhawat said the 'missing details' require the village map to be redrawn and the cultural period to be reoriented as specified, among other things. 'As per experts suggestion: a) the nomenclatures of the three periods require change; b) the time bracket of 8th century BC to 5th century BCE given for Period 1 is not justified at all; c) The other two periods should also be determined on the basis of scientific AMS dates and the material recovered in view of stratigraphical details. For the earliest period in the present state of our knowledge we can, at the maximum, suggest that it originates somewhere in pre-300 BCE…' the annexure said. On June 10, Shekhawat had said further studies were needed to validate the ASI findings on an ancient civilisation at Keezhadi. In response to another question by DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, the Ministry informed Parliament Monday that ASI has not requested any 'revised report' on the site from the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology. Maran also asked details of the 'additional excavation phases and funding support' by ASI for the tenth phase of Keezhadi excavation that began on June 18, 2024, which has already 'identified six terracotta pipelines and various urban settlement structures'. To this, Shekhawat replied: 'Question does not arise.' Divya A reports on travel, tourism, culture and social issues - not necessarily in that order - for The Indian Express. Need to bring law to stop 'love jihad', says Goa CM
Goa: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant addresses a press conference at the State Assembly complex, in Porvorim, Goa. (PTI Photo) PORVORIM: Goa CM Pramod Sawant said in the assembly on Monday that it was time the state also brought in anti-conversion laws like Uttar Pradesh to curb cases of ' love jihad '. The chief minister said many cases of love jihad were reported earlier in Goa too, and he would release the numbers soon. "We need to bring in the anti-conversion law, and all of you from Congress need to support it," Sawant said after opposition criticised state govt over Goa Police's inability to track an accused woman, Ayesha, who was recently arrested by UP Police in an anti-conversion case. Sawant's statement was, however, opposed by Goa Forward Party's Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, who said the CM was trying to push his party's national agenda in Goa. "There are no cases of love jihad in Goa. He should give the number of such cases. We are diverting from the issue of a transnational network, which also saw activities from Goa. No Goans live in Aldeia de Goa (a gated complex where accused Ayesha's parents rented a flat) and nobody knows what the residents there are up to," Sardesai said. Sawant said the anti-conversion law would only be applicable in cases of forced conversions and would not interfere with consensual inter-religious marriages. "Conversion should not take place by offering lures like money, etc.," he added. tnn

EPS says he is not a worm for the BJP to swallow
Trichy: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said on Monday that he was not a worm to be swallowed by BJP . Responding to remarks by chief minister M K Stalin that BJP would swallow AIA DMK , EPS said it was DMK which was swallowing its allies. "Stalin says BJP will swallow Palaniswami. Is Palaniswami a worm to be swallowed by a fish? You are the one swallowing many of your allies. Congress has diminished, Communists have disappeared, and VCK is sticking around with DMK," he said during his campaign in Thanjavur. EPS also rebutted the criticism that AIADMK will be divided by BJP. "Stalin is warning us that AIADMK will break and that I should be careful. I would like to tell him that AIADMK will not break," EPS said. EPS alleged that when he was the chief minister, DMK was desperate to bring him down and posed several troubles, especially the no confidence motion in the assembly in 2017. "When we proved our majority and defeated the motion, he walked away with torn shirt. When we win the elections next year, (his) dhoti too will also disappear," EPS said. EPS reaffirmed that his party will form a govt with an absolute majority in the upcoming assembly elections. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Crypto CFDs May Suit Your Portfolio IC Markets Learn More Undo "Stalin claims that the DMK alliance will win 200 seats. Instead, the AIADMK alliance will win in 210 seats. AIADMK will form the govt with an absolute majority," he said. He also hit out at Stalin for not preventing the Karnataka govt from going ahead with the Mekedatu dam project. "Congress is ruling in Karnataka. DMK and Congress are part of the INDIA bloc. Why can't you (Stalin) talk to Congress and resolve the Mekedatu dam row?" he asked. He said that Karnataka has sought permission from the Centre to construct the dam, EPS alleged that neither the CM nor water resources minister have spoken anything about it. "If Mekedatu dam was built , Cauvery delta region in Tamil Nadu would become a desert," he said.
