Plan for finish line at Kai Tak for Hong Kong Marathon at early stages only

Changing the route of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon so that it runs into Kai Tak was only at the very early stages of planning, the organisers said, with 'only initial communications' held with the relevant parties.
Dennis Ng Yu-ho, executive director of the Hong Kong Association of Athletics Affiliates, said the soon-to-be-opened Kai Tak Sports Park could be chosen in future as a finish line to replace Victoria Park in Causeway Bay – which has been the finishing point since 2008 – only once issues about the route's accessibility were tackled.
'There are many considerations when discussing replanning the route or making major changes,' he said. 'There is the throughput of the route, the impact on traffic or even the atmosphere.
'Is [the route] suitable for allowing nearby residents to cheer along the way? All these are part of the considerations and we're only at an initial stage.'
Putting the marathon's finish line at the 50,000-seat Kai Tak Sports Park – the way marathons at Olympic Games often finish at the major stadiums – could also be considered in the future, Ng said, as it was ideal to have a 'very pretty' start and finish line in the city. 'Apart from those two largest points, the connecting locations and some other details along the route are something we need to iron out,' said Ng.

Tributes paid after Macau footballer is killed in car crash aged 20

Tributes have been paid to a young Macau footballer who played for his city's representative team, after he was killed in a car accident on Monday. Leon Ng Lai-teng, who was 20 years old, was one of six passengers involved in a single-vehicle accident near Macau's Grand Prix Building, local media reported. The car crashed into barriers on Avenida da Amizade on Monday morning. Reports stated that the vehicle's 20-year-old female driver lost her life in the crash, as did Ng, another 20-year-old male and a 19-year-old male. Three further people suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the reports. Ng had played for Macau's representative team against their Hong Kong counterparts at Hong Kong's Mong Kok Stadium in March this year. Leon Ng in action for his club. A right-sided defender in his football career, Ng played in Hong Kong last year when he took part in December's qualifying tournament, hosted in the city, for this summer's East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) Championship in South Korea.

Ledecky wins 22nd world title with freestyle gold

Ledecky wins 22nd world title with freestyle gold Ledecky's victory moves her closer to Michael Phelps's career tally of 26 world gold medals. Photo: Reuters Katie Ledecky won the 22nd world title of her legendary career to close in on Michael Phelps's record as fellow Olympic champions David Popovici and Kaylee McKeown also struck gold. American great Ledecky cruised to a dominant 1,500m freestyle gold, touching the wall in 15min 26.44sec, having threatened her own world record of 15:20.48. The masterful win in Singapore moved Ledecky four short of the retired Phelps's career tally of 26 world gold medals. "Growing up it was very inspiring to watch world championships, Olympic Games that Michael was in, trying to learn from the very best," said Ledecky, 28. "I was always a student of the sport." Ledecky's win gave the American the sixth world 1,500m freestyle title of her career. She is also a nine-time Olympic gold medallist. Second was Simona Quadarella of Italy in 15:31.79 and third Australia's Lani Pallister in 15:41.18. Ledecky was the red-hot favourite going into the race, having qualified for the final over 10 seconds faster than nearest challenger Pallister. She also went into the race owning the top 24 1,500m freestyle times ever, and set the second-fastest time in history in April behind her own record. Pallister pushed her with a fast early tempo and Ledecky was on world record pace until late in the race. In the end she fell short of the mark but still clocked the fifth-fastest time ever. "Lani took it out there. I knew she would be out fast and I just wanted to get out fast, but comfortable enough that I could go from there," said Ledecky. "I'm happy with the time and happy with the swim." It is Ledecky's first gold medal of the championships, after picking up a bronze behind Summer McIntosh in the 400m freestyle on Sunday's opening night in Singapore. Ledecky is set to go head-to-head with Canadian phenomenon McIntosh again in the 800m freestyle. Popovici claimed a thrilling 200m freestyle gold – then revealed he had very nearly pulled out. The 20-year-old Romanian reeled in US rival Luke Hobson to take the title in 1:43.53, with Hobson settling for silver (1:43.84) and Japan's 18-year-old Tatsuya Murasa taking bronze (1:44.54). Popovici said afterwards that he had seriously considered withdrawing from the competition before it started, even going as far as looking at flights home. "It was a mental thing and it had to do with the fear of seeing my real potential," said Popovici, who reclaimed his world crown from 2022. "That's very scary. And so I'm really glad I didn't quit." ‘New milestone': 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar bids to stage 2036 Olympic Games

Doha is bidding to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, authorities said on Tuesday, as the wealthy Gulf state sets its sights on yet another major sport event to diversify its energy-reliant economy. Advertisement One of the smallest and wealthiest states in the Gulf, Qatar had already hosted the 2022 Fifa World Cup. Should it be chosen, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic Games, said Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. 'The official bid submitted by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games represents a new milestone in Qatar's journey,' he said in a statement shared on the official Qatar News Agency. 'The bid builds on Qatar's proven track record of successfully hosting major international sporting events, most notably the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022,' Sheikh Mohammed added. Argentina's Lionel Messi lifts the World Cup after the final at Lusail Stadium, Qatar, in 2022. Amnesty International and other rights groups claimed thousands of migrant workers died in the lead-up to the 2022 tournament, though Doha has said only 37 workers on World Cup projects perished – and only three in work-related accidents.
