Broncos roster: Pat Bryant (No. 13) adds strong hands to offense

Broncos roster: Pat Bryant (No. 13) adds strong hands to offense Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie wide receiver Pat Bryant, No. 13. Before the Broncos: Bryant (6-3 ,190 pounds) is a big-build receiver capable of high-pointing a jump ball and coming down with it. Bryant was a four-year player at Illinois, catching 137 passes for 2,095 yards and 19 touchdowns. Bryant had his best season as a senior for the Illini, catching 54 passes for 984 yards and 10 touchdowns. Bryant's productivity earned him a spot at the Reese's Senior Bowl, and an invite to the 2025 NFL combine. At the combine, Bryant was slower than expected, running a 4.61-second 40-yard dash, but he posted a high jump of 37.5 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet, four inches. Broncos tenure: Despite having a lower grade from many pundits, the Broncos selected Bryant in the third round (74th overall) of the 2025 NFL draft. He signed a four-year contract on May 7 worth $6.577 million. After only dropping one pass last fall, Bryant enters the NFL as a sure-handed prospect. He will make his pro debut during preseason this summer. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Bryant has already earned rave reviews from head coach Sean Payton, as well as drawing comparisons to Saints legend Michael Thomas. Although he was a little slow at the NFL combine, Bryant shows better game speed on his tape and a high-point ability that will be able to give number one receiver Courtland Sutton a little more breathing room, as well as another big weapon for sophomore quarterback Bo Nix. As a recent draft pick, Bryant is essentially a lock to make the active roster. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.

Magic Johnson makes expectations clear for Luka Doncic

The Luka Doncic era has begun for the Los Angeles Lakers. While LeBron James, presumably, has at least one season left with the team, the pressure and expectations of leading the team to success have shifted over to Doncic. In six seasons and change with the Dallas Mavericks, he reached the Western Conference Finals twice and the NBA Finals once. While that may be considered somewhat satisfactory for that franchise, things are much different when they play for the Lakers, a franchise that has won 17 world championships. Magic Johnson, who led the Lakers to five of those championships, made it clear during an appearance on ESPN's "First Take" that the standard of excellence for Doncic in L.A. is the Larry O'Brien Trophy. "Luka gotta understand this is not Dallas. To your point, Kobe [Bryant], superstar who led us, Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal) led us to a championship, LeBron led us. And that's what's missing here. We shouldn't have to tell you to be in shape, you should have been about that, right? Especially when you're a superstar. So this is gonna be an important year for the Lakers, important offseason for the Lakers." So far this offseason, Doncic has looked noticeably thinner, which is certainly a good sign. Assuming the Lakers improve the rest of their roster, it will now be on Doncic to lead the way, both on and off the court, along with James, as they continue to seek their 18th NBA title. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle It won't be enough for Doncic to continue to put up insane numbers — he needs to consistently deliver in crunch time, something he didn't do enough of since joining the team, and especially during the postseason. That is what true Lakers greats such as Bryant, O'Neal, Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did in the past and what James did during the franchise's last championship season five years ago.

Charlotte Pithie, Norwell girls' lacrosse save the best for last to close out Cohasset in Division 4

The Bryant-bound standout made two clutch saves in the final two minutes, cementing a thrilling 9-8 triumph over rival and defending champion Cohasset at Babson College. Pithie finished with 12 saves, guiding the No. 3 Clippers (19-3) to their first state title since 2018 and ninth overall. Senior Charlise Cox delivered the winner with 2:42 left, then Pithie and the defense took care of the rest to seal a Division 4 championship. 'Our whole team has been waiting so long for this.' Advertisement Senior Holly Panttila paced the Clippers with three goals and Natasha Mikus and Caroline Burtch added two apiece. Sophomore Molly Campbell notched three and her twin Maddie scored two for the No. 1 Skippers (21-3). Cohasset fought valiantly, but ended up running out of time. 'They battled,' said first-year Cohasset coach Kara Connerty, who previously coached Norwell. 'I'm very proud of my team and my seniors.'That's what you want in the state final is a battle.' The teams were tied at 3 through one quarter, 6 at the half, and 8 with six minutes remaining. Then the Florida State-bound Cox darted in from behind the net and finished in one fluid swoop. Advertisement In the final seconds, as she's done so many times throughout her illustrious career, Pithie saved the Clippers one more time. 'The emotions were so high,' said first-year Norwell coach Laura Callahan. 'It was honestly such a battle between the two teams. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It just came down to that these girls just wanted it.' When the final horn sounded, the Clippers celebrated at midfield, then kept the party going on the sideline. Pithie couldn't believe it actually happened, asking if it was real. It was, indeed. After falling to the Skippers in a heartbreaker during the regular season, the Clippers avenged that loss and sent their seniors out as champions. They no longer had to wonder what if, as they actualized a collective dream with one magical moment. 'It's truly amazing,' Pithie said. 'I've been dreaming of this moment since I was a freshman. I just can't even believe it's here.' When the buzzer sounded, the Norwell players sprinted down the turf at Babson to celebrate their 9-8 win over Cohasset in the Division 4 final.
