Aaron-Wooi Yik Exit Indonesia Open in First Round
During the Super 1000 tournament held in Istora Senayan, the third seeds got off to a shaky start, losing the first game 13-21, but bounced back to take the second set 21-19.
Despite leading 11-7 in the decider, a string of unforced errors saw Kjaer-Sogaard rally to a 21-18 win, sealing the match in 59 minutes. This marks the Danes' second win over the Malaysians in five encounters.
Speaking to the Badminton World Federation after the game, Wooi Yik admitted that their opponents played much better than them and vowed to comeback stronger in future tournaments.
Last Sunday, Aaron-Wooi Yik were crowned the Singapore Open 2025 champions, their third title this year, with a hard-fought rubber-set victory over South Korean duo Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae, 15-21, 21-18, 21-19.
Meanwhile, it was the end of the road for two other men's doubles pairs namely Choong Hon Jian-Muhammad Haikal Nazri and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi.
Hon Jian-Muhammad Haikal Nazri were outplayed by 2021 world champions from Japan, Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi, 13-21, 9-21 while Yew Sin-Ee Yi lost to fourth seeds from China, Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang, 21-23, 20-22.
In the meantime, national top women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah did not have any problem to clear the first round hurdle as they dumped Sung Shuo Yun-Yu Chien Hui of Taiwan, 21-16, 21-17.
The fourth seeds will next take on local pair Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti after the Indonesians came from behind to eliminate another Malaysian duo, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing, 19-21, 21-16, 21-19.
In men's singles action, national shuttler Leong Jun Hao kicked off his Indonesia Open 2025 campaign with a bang as he silenced the home crowd, thanks to a commanding straight sets win over Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo, 21-13, 21-12 in 40 minutes.
Next up for Jun Hao in the second round tomorrow is the winner of the other first round tie between fourth seeds Li Shi Feng of China or Brian Yang from Canada.

Veteran Pei Jing shows she is still hungry for glory

PETALING JAYA: Teaming up with Jimmy Wong is proving to be the right decision for shuttler Lai Pei Jing. Jimmy and Pei Jing impressed by upstaging several higher ranked pairs to reach the mixed doubles final in their first World Tour outing together in the Super 300 Macau Open. Currently ranked 127th in the world, the duo, who only combined in March, lost 13-21, 16-21 to Denmark's Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje in the final at the Macau East Asian Games Dome on Sunday. Despite missing out on their first title together, Pei Jing, who will turn 33 on Friday, was happy to defy her age and get on the podium again in the World Tour. She last won a World Tour title in 2022 in the Korean Open with former partner Tan Kian Meng. Pei Jing finished runners-up last year in the women's doubles with Lim Chiew Sien in the Australian Open. 'It feels great to be back on the tour and to be able to stand on the podium again,' said Pei Jing. 'To be honest, I never expected that. I'm happy for Jimmy too. I'm happy with his performance throughout the week. 'Hopefully, we can keep this momentum and get better. This is just the beginning. 'I know there will be more obstacles after this for us to go through but I guess I'm really for it. 'I'll wait for the silver to turn gold one day.' Jimmy, who turns 23 later this month, and Pei Jing were the first Malaysians to reach a World Tour final in the mixed doubles this year. Pro Zii Jia charging full steam into world meet
PETALING JAYA: Former world No. 2 men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia (pic) has confirmed he will compete in the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25-31. In fact, he is hard at work to be in good form for the world meet. This puts to rest concerns among badminton fans that the former Asian champion might pull out before the Aug 12 deadline. This is because although he received an invitation from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to compete in the tournament, his confirmation came before the Japan and China Opens, which took place last month, where he withdrew from both events at the last minute. Speaking to The Star, a source close to Zii Jia said that he has been recovering well from a previous injury and is currently undergoing intensive preparations for the tournament. 'He will compete in the World Championships and has been training hard with his coach Yeoh Kay Bin. As for his foot injury, it has improved compared to before,' said the source when contacted. However, no high expectations have been placed on the player as this will be his first tournament since his last competitive outing five months ago. Zii Jia had been struggling with a right ankle ligament injury sustained during the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou last December. He attempted a return in March, but the injury worsened after he played at the Orleans Masters and the All-England – the only two tournaments he has competed in this year. Zii Jia has around three weeks left to step up his preparations, with the tournament draw scheduled for next Wednesday. Although he currently holds a protected ranking from the BWF, his current world ranking of No. 35 could see him facing a tough opponent as early as the first round. Since making his World Championships debut in 2019 in Basel, Zii Jia has yet to progress beyond the quarter-finals. In the previous edition in Copenhagen in 2023, he was knocked out in the third round by close friend Anders Antonsen. Besides Zii Jia, fellow men's singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao will also compete in Paris, making his debut at the prestigious tournament.
