More Singaporeans embrace solo travel, with millennials leading the way
Photo: Freepik/freepik SINGAPORE: Solo travel is quickly becoming a mainstream preference among Singaporeans, especially the younger generation, according to a recent survey commissioned by budget airline Scoot and conducted by YouGov. The survey, which polled over 5,000 people across five Asia Pacific countries, found that nearly 79 per cent of Singaporean respondents had gone on solo trips multiple times over the past year, with nearly half (49 per cent) of them taking three or more solo journeys during the same period. The poll found that millennials made up 51 per cent of current and potential solo travellers in Singapore. This is a notably higher figure than the regional average of 40 per cent across the Asia Pacific. According to the survey, the top reasons for travelling alone include the freedom and flexibility as well as the desire to explore new places at one's own pace, without having to compromise on group plans or preferences. Over 80 per cent of Singaporean respondents also said they would recommend the experience to others. Looking ahead, Singaporean solo travellers have their sights set on nearby destinations, with Japan, China, and Malaysia topping the wish list for the next 12 months. SINGAPORE – Hong Kong actor Raymond Lam was recently in Singapore to kick off his family's summer vacation. The 45-year-old is married to Chinese model Carina Zhang, 34, and they have a daughter, Luna, who turns five in September. Zhang shared photos of their stay here on Luna's account on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, with the caption titled: 'Transformed into a mermaid in SG'. 'Singapore was the first stop of my summer vacation,' Zhang wrote in Chinese on behalf of her daugher. 'I've become obsessed with The Little Mermaid lately, so my dad booked a hotel where I could watch the fish from my room, and my mum bought me a mermaid costume, making my little wish come true.' Lam was previously in Singapore in November 2024, when he was one of the judges at the finals of Mediacorp's talent competition Star Search. When he was in town this time round, Lam was spotted by several local fans, who uploaded videos and photos of him on social media. In one clip posted on Instagram and TikTok on July 24, the star of Hong Kong action crime thriller Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In (2024) was seen at Changi Airport's arrival hall and then boarding a car with his family. A fan posted a photo of herself with Lam on Xiaohongshu on July 25. She replied to a netizen that she bumped into him in Haji Lane on July 24. 'I was so lucky to run into him,' she wrote in Chinese. 2026 school year to start on Jan 2, end on Nov 20
SINGAPORE: The 2026 school year for all Ministry of Education (MOE) kindergartens, primary and secondary schools will begin on Jan 2 and end on Nov 20. Students in Kindergarten 2 and from Primary 2 to 6 will report to school on Jan 5, said the ministry on Wednesday (Jul 30). Those entering their first year in junior colleges (JCs) and Millennia Institute (MI) will start on Feb 4, with the rest of the JC and MI students starting earlier, on Jan 12. VACATION PERIODS There are four vacation periods for schools, JCs and MI in 2026. For MOE kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, the first vacation period starts on Mar 14 and ends on Mar 22. The second begins May 30 and ends on Jun 28, the third runs from Sep 5 to Sep 13 and the fourth from Nov 21 to Dec 31. JCs and MI mainly share the first three vacation periods as MOE kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. However, the final vacation period for JC students in Year 1 and MI students in Years 1 and 2 will be from Nov 28 to Dec 31. JC students in Year 2 and MI students in Year 3 will have their vacation period from the end of the GCE A-Level examinations to Dec 31. There will also be three scheduled school holidays in 2026:
