James Milner to wear number 20 at Brighton in memory of Diogo Jota

Independent12 hours ago
James Milner will wear the number 20 shirt at Brighton this season in memory of the late Diogo Jota, describing his former Liverpool team-mate as a 'great friend'.
The Portuguese forward died aged 28 last month in a car crash, alongside his brother Andre Silva, just weeks after helping Liverpool clinch Premier League title glory.
Liverpool have retired the number 20 jersey worn by Jota in his five seasons at Anfield, three of them alongside Milner before the veteran England midfielder moved to Brighton in the summer of 2023.
With Carlos Baleba opting to have 17 on his back ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and vacating 20, Milner, who has been Brighton's number six, has swooped in to pay a touching tribute to Jota.
'Once I heard Carlos was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and pay tribute to Diogo Jota,' Milner said on the club's X channel.
'He was an amazing player who I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well.
'It will be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League this year.'
Milner – whose contract was extended by Brighton in June for another season, which will take him past his 40th birthday – was among a number of Jota's former team-mates who attended his funeral in July.
With 638 Premier League appearances already to his name, he sits within striking distance of Gareth Barry's all-time record of 653 games.

Burnley close in on deal for £25m-rated forgotten Chelsea star as Blues look to finance Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons moves

Chelsea striker Armando Broja is closing on a move to Scott Parker 's Burnley. The 23-year old is set to undergo a medical ahead of a permanent move to the newly-promoted side. Chelsea have been looking for £25million for Broja, who graduated from the club's academy after initially joining their youth setup in 2009. The Albania international spent last season on loan at Everton. His spell on Merseyside was curtailed by injuries however, and Broja was unable to find the net in his ten Premier League appearances for the Toffees. Burnley have also been looking at Norwich City striker Josh Sargent but talks over Broja are at an advanced stage. Chelsea are in a phase of selling fringe players and are hoping to generate funds ahead of their next recruitment stage where they intend to add the likes of Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons from Red Bull Leipzig. Nicolas Jackson could also leave the club before the end of the month.

Thomas Frank can't hide true feelings on Son Heung-min after emotional Spurs departure

Tottenham icon Son Heung-min confirmed his decision to leave the North London club ahead of the new season and new boss Thomas Frank has now spoken out on his exit Thomas Frank claims he would still 'love to work' with Son Heung-min but claims his upcoming exit is a 'perfect ending'. The 33-year-old forward confirmed his intention to leave the club after ten years in an emotional press conference in South Korea. ‌ He has yet to confirm where his next stage will be, albeit has been strongly linked with a move to MLS side LAFC. New Spurs boss Frank was alongside Son as he made his announcement - and was asked for his thoughts. ‌ While the Dane would have relished the chance to coach the forward, he believes that the timing is now right to bid farewell. He said: 'For me personally, I would love to work with him. He is a fantastic person and player. ‌ 'I've had the opportunity to watch him from a distance. He has been here 10 years at Spurs, not just 10 years but 10 amazing years. He is a truly Spurs legend in every aspect. I actually think one of the best players who has ever played in the Premier League as a winger in my opinion. 'I like the club has been open to it because it is never easy to find that perfect timing and me coming in a little bit from the side I think it's probably the perfect timing going out on a high. Been here for 10 years, won a well deserved trophy. Been a key player for many seasons. It's almost the perfect ending to a happy family.' And it appears that Frank is set to give Son the perfect chance to say goodbye to Spurs. The former Brentford boss has confirmed that the forward will captain the side in their pre-season friendly against Premier League rivals Newcastle in home country Saudi Arabia. He added: 'I think it's very clear. It's no secret that Sonny will start and will lead the team out as captain. So I'm looking forward to that in many ways and if it is to be the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it in South Korea, his home country in front of his home fans. 'That could potentially be a beautiful ending. First and foremost with the biggest respect to Sonny and what he's done for the club.' ‌ Where will Tottenham finish in the Premier League this season? Share your thoughts in the comments below With a month of the transfer window left to go, attention will now turn to potential replacements that could be brought in ahead of Son's exit. But Frank has claimed that he already has a few candidates already at the club. He said: 'First and foremost, when a great player is leaving a team other players have a chance to shine. Brennan Johnson is a player who could play on the left. 'Also I think that Wilson Odobert did well against Arsenal and can play on the left and also Mathys Tel is a flexible player. I think we have some young promising players that hopefully can step up and take over from Sonny in the future.'
