James Milner and his wife show off matching ripped physiques on beach in Barbados as Brighton midfielder, 39, targets playing into his FORTIES
James Milner has jetted to the Caribbean to unwind after a challenging season for Brighton with the end of their Premier League campaign. The 39-year-old former Liverpool star was sidelined for the majority of the term under new manager Fabian Hurzeler, after injuring himself in just the third game of the season when the Seagulls met Arsenal. After undergoing knee reconstruction, Milner had been targeting a return to action in December. But a freak instance of damage to a nerve tendon set back his progress, with the midfielder making his first appearance since August in the final game of the season against Tottenham. Milner looked keen to put the 2024/25 term behind him as he soaked up the sun with his wife Amy Fletcher. The pair looked in similarly tip-top condition as they enjoyed the tropical climes of Barbados on Wednesday. Reflecting on his injury this week, Milner admitted that his fitness was what convinced him that he could continue playing into his forties. 'I couldn't lift my foot or my toes, not an ideal scenario,' said the 39-year-old of the nerve damage. 'I didn't know whether I would be able to walk properly again let alone play football. 'There was a chance I might not have come back at all. Nobody said quit. But with my age it was highly unlikely I would get back. I think that was one of the things that drove me most. My first aim was to try and get the knee as strong as possible which I did. 'It's been a long, tough road,' he continued. 'I don't think many would have come back from this. The medical staff have been incredible. 'We worked hard and thankfully it has paid off. I've just run out of time with the season. If the season was next week, I would be fit.' Milner made his Premier League debut for Leeds at the age of 16 and won the title with both Manchester City and Liverpool. But the former England midfielder is targeting a long career with a view to playing into his forties He lifted the FA Cup and League Cup with both clubs and the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019, and has earned 61 England caps from 2009-16, but Milner believes that his journey is far from over. 'I would like to keep playing,' said Milner, who will be 40 in January. 'I look at my fitness now and I feel good. I've definitely got another year left in me. 'We're in talks with the club and quite close so it will be nice to be here and be part of the team and help the boys. Hopefully I can be part of it.'

Brighton show promise under Hurzeler in a season of transition
Fabian Hurzeler deserves huge credit for securing the club's second-highest Premier League finish in his first season in charge. A points tally of 61 was only one shy of the campaign that delivered Europa League football under Roberto de Zerbi with help from Graham Potter. The lack of European football next season will be a frustration, but it is not the only target for this the 32-year-old arrived, he stated he wanted to "challenge the establishment", and in terms of league position, he came very close. At times, the Seagulls bloodied a few noses with some stand-out performances, securing wins over both this season and last year's champions along the way. Hurzeler continues to strive for consistency, and that has been difficult to achieve for a host of business and big-name sales allowed huge investment last summer, but Hurzeler has been hampered hugely by injuries to new signings Matt O'Riley and Ferdi Kadioglu as well as dependable Solly March and the experienced James Milner. Adding that to several shorter absences from regular key first-team players, he did not name the same starting XI in any Premier League game this style has evolved, but the high-intensity football is clear to see. Goals have not been a problem with three individuals making double figures for the first time. Defensively, the team has looked slightly suspect at times, but the stats are skewed by that 7-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest. Ironically, that loss sparked a brilliant run, and that has been the story this season. The good results have come in streaks, finishing the campaign with 13 points from a positive 15. Away from the league, the defeat in the quarter finals of the FA Cup also hurt, especially when arch rivals Crystal Palace, went on to lift the with the past five or so seasons, the next challenge is to deal with inevitable interest in the star performers. Joao Pedro, Kaoru Mitoma and Bart Verbruggen will all have their suitors but, as ever, the club will only sell at the right price and when it already has a replacement in-house or on the way in. A season of transition has shown huge promise, and an ambitious head coach will be hoping to build on a decent platform next year.

James Milner feared he may never walk normally again after freak injury setback
Brighton midfielder James Milner missed most of the season after suffering a freak issue that left him fearing for his career when undergoing an operation to resolve a knee injury James Milner feared he may never walk normally again after suffering nerve damage in an operation. The former Newcastle and Liverpool midfielder could not lift his foot after going under the knife for knee surgery. Milner, 39, featured for a single minute off of the bench in Brighton's win over Tottenham on the final day of the Premier League season. That marked the veteran's return after last playing for the Seagulls in August. Milner started Brighton's first three games of the season but was forced off the pitch against Arsenal. The ex-Manchester City ace picked up an issue in the build up to that game and required surgery to resolve an issue in his knee. The Brighton star is out of contract this summer, though boss Fabian Hurzeler has insisted he wants to retain Milner's services. But Milner's return to fitness was far from certain earlier this term after his operation saw a nerve get damaged. The former England international was unable to lift his foot as a result. 'I had a contact injury in training before the Arsenal game on my knee. It was stable and we gave it a go and my hamstring reacted. "I had a knee operation and knee reconstruction, which was fine and I would have been back at the start of December. But in the operation, a nerve got damaged. After the operation, I couldn't lift my foot or my toes. The first time I saw any flicker of life was the 31st of December." Milner admitted that the issue could have ended his career outright. Walking normally may not have even been possible. He explained: "It's been a long, tough road. The medical staff have been incredible, [club physio] Sean Duggan has been absolutely unbelievable. There was a chance I might not have come back at all. I didn't know if I could walk normally again, never mind play football. "But, thankfully, the hard work's paid off. And to get on the field today [Sunday] with the boys and see them turn it around in the second half and be a part of that was special. "I've been on the grass for a good few months now, but I just need to be careful with contact. I've just run out of time. If the season was next week, I think I would have been fit from now on. "It's not age-related, it's just one chance in however many thousand. It was just a bit of bad luck after starting the season well and feeling good." It now remains to be seen whether his career will continue at the Amex with the upwardly mobile Seagulls, Hurzeler would certainly like that to be the case. He said: "I'd like him to be here next season, but we are in discussions, let's see how he will come back." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
