Sabrina Carpenter's new album cover has sparked uproar. Here's what you need to know

The Age2 days ago

Sabrina Carpenter has revealed the date her new album will be released and unveiled the cover art – and fans have had some very mixed reactions.
The image for the 26-year-old's seventh studio album, Man's Best Friend, due out on August 29, depicts Carpenter on her knees in a mini dress and high heels, with her hair being held by an anonymised man in a suit.
Carpenter delivered the update on the followup to last year's chart topping Short n' Sweet via Instagram on Thursday morning AEST, sparking an online debate over whether the image is ironic or misogynistic. Comments on Carpenter's post ran the gamut from disgust — 'I don't wanna see no man dragging you around by your hair mother, please get up' — to adulation — 'MOTHER FEEDING HER CHILDREN'.
The cover represents a departure from the imagery of Carpenter's previous six studio albums, which featured the artist alone, often in subdued poses. However, the singer has increasingly played into an ultra-feminised persona that smacks of irony and an understanding of the way female artists are depicted in popular culture.
Dr Emma Phillips, an assistant professor at the University of Canberra who wrote her PhD on the aesthetics of sexualisation, said that the largely negative response to the image was a response to 'an immense shift in our post-feminist times', in which women are increasingly taking ownership of old-school misogynistic imagery that traditionally objectified them.
'[Women are told to] perform their feminity in a so called 'appropriate way', and appropriate is not being in charge of their sexuality, or revealing too much flesh, or being an active agent in their own sexual selves. Here we see Carpenter being an active agent in her sexual life, and immediately she's derided for that,' said Phillips.
'There's a deep irony or satire going on, and there's no question that Carpenter is engaging in that … we should engage with who she is, with the lyrics on the album, and some of her history, rather than just take a surface reading of things, which unfortunately, is what most people will do.'
Manchild, the lead single from the upcoming album speaks to Carpenter's dominance over male companions, featuring lyrics like 'never heard of self-care, half your brain just ain't there', and 'I like my men all incompetent'. It fits neatly into earlier offerings like chart toppers Espresso, Taste, and Bed Chem, all of which proudly celebrate Carpenter's sexuality and power over men.

Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen finalise their divorce

Don't miss out on the headlines from Hook Ups & Break Ups. Followed categories will be added to My News. Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher have finalised their divorce just a year after they announced their shock split to the world. The pair released a shared statement to their Instagram accounts on Friday where they told fans that they are 'proud' of everything they managed to achieve together as a couple during their marriage. 'Our divorce has now been finalised,' the exes both shared. 'We are proud of all we've achieved together and, continuing our great respect for each other, we remain friends and committed to co-parenting our wonderful children. We ask for the media to continue to respect our children's privacy.' Details regarding their finalised agreement remain unclear at this time. Source: Instagram/islafisher Earlier this year, reports emerged that the pair were 'at war' as they worked out the division of their £60 million (A$119,084,160) fortune. According to the Daily Mail, Fisher's candid remarks about their split in an interview with The Sunday Times had left her ex feeling 'utterly betrayed'. Speaking about how she'd gotten through the break-up, Fisher said: 'The women in my life have held me … the female relationships that I cultivated in our business, those women have been there for me. 'I'm sitting here today because of them. I've learnt so much about the power of female friendship and I've just learnt that I do have resilience, who I am outside of a partnership, and what my values are. It's been this expansive learning curve,' she continued. During her deeply personal Times interview, Fisher also admitted that the divorce was 'the most difficult thing' she'd been through, and that she'd 'learnt so much' about herself in the process. 'I never imagined my family being separated but we are committed and loving parents,' she explained, adding that her parents had an amicable split when she was nine years old, and that was the 'blueprint' for her own situation. 'That's the dream,' Fisher told the publication. Reports emerged earlier this year that their split had become messy. Picture: Getty. Both Fisher and her British ex live in London, where they co-parent their three children. The pair first shared that they were ending their relationship after nearly 14 years of marriage last April. 'After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years, we are finally putting our racquets down,' the two stars said in a joint statement at the time. 'In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage. We have always prioritised our privacy, and have been quietly working through this change.' 'We forever share in our devotion and love for our children. We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family's wish for privacy,' the message closed. The announcement came after reports had emerged they were living separate lives and had been asked to comment. Originally published as Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen finalise their divorce
