Tilda Swinton to Star in David Lowery's Adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh Novel ‘Death in Her Hands'

Yahoo16-05-2025
Tilda Swinton is set to lead another literary adaptation: Ottessa Moshfegh's psychological thriller 'Death in Her Hands,' with auteur David Lowery directing. Swinton, who most recently led Pedro Almodóvar's English feature debut 'The Room Next Door,' will star as widow Vesta Gul, who may or may not have stumbled upon a crime scene. The character finds a handwritten note while walking in the woods, with the letter reading, 'Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body.' Yet without a corpse in sight, recluse Vesta becomes obsessed with solving the would-be murder.
The book's official synopsis reads, 'As her inner world begins to eclipse reality, the mystery of Magda threatens Vesta's grip on her own life — until, in a spellbinding operatic climax, we realize that Magda's death may finally allow Vesta to live.' The novel was published in 2000.

Lowery will adapt the novel for the screen, with See-Saw Films producing. Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, and Jeanie Igoe are producing, with the executive producers including Simon Gillis and Ann Phillips. See-Saw's sales division Cross City Films and WME Independent are set to secure financing for the feature at Cannes.
'I am a devoted fan of Ottessa Moshfegh, and the opportunity to translate 'Death in Her Hands' to the big screen has been, in some ways, a subterfuge for getting to spend a great deal of time obsessing over her prose. But now the ruse is up!,' Lowery said in a press statement. 'The script begot by the novel will soon become a film, and I am suddenly aware more than ever that adapting this particular work represents a devious challenge (anyone who's read the novel will understand why)! But I'm ready for it, and am emboldened to have such wonderful collaborators at my side: the whole team at See-Saw, Jeanie, and of course, the incredible Tilda Swinton, who I know will illuminate Ottessa's story in ways I could only dream of.'
Producers Canning and Sherman added, 'David Lowery is a master of crafting striking, atmospheric stories, and there's no one better to bring Ottessa Moshfegh's haunting and brilliant novel to the screen. We can't wait for audiences to step into the world he creates and be swept away by Vesta's story, played by the incomparable, magnetic, and endlessly compelling Tilda Swinton.'
Lowery next has 'Mother Mary' in the works starring Anne Hathaway, which is currently in post-production. 'Death in Her Hands' isn't the only Moshfegh adaptation in the works: Author Moshfegh, who also collaborated with Hathaway for her adaptation of 'Eileen,' told IndieWire that she hand-selects who will adapt her work for the screen.
'I wouldn't just sign the rights over to a novel to anyone,' she said. 'There are people who have some doings around other IPs. I trust them, but that isn't to say I'm not good at detachment. I don't actually want to control other people's work. An adaptation is just an adaptation. It's not supposed to be a carbon copy. That's impossible. It's a reinterpretation, it's a translation, and it's a really creative process.'
Moshfegh added at the time that the adaptation of 'My Year of Rest and Relaxation,' to which LuckyChap optioned the rights to in 2018 and Yorgos Lanthimos was rumored to be attached to direct, is still 'underway.' No director has been announced yet. 'I have no idea about the timeline on that, but hopefully sometime,' 'Causeway' screenwriter Moshfegh said in 2023.Best of IndieWire

Cristiano Ronaldo's longtime girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez announces engagement by showing off massive ring

Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has put quite the ring on his longtime girlfriend's finger. Ronaldo, 40, and Georgina Rodriguez, who has been his girlfriend since 2017, are now engaged, as the latter shared as such on Monday. In an Instagram post, Rodriguez showed off her new, massive, oval-shaped engagement ring with a heartwarming caption in Spanish. "Yes, I do. In this and in all my lives," Rodriguez's caption read when translated to English. Rodriguez was rumored to be engaged to Ronaldo, as she's been seen with a ring on that finger. However, this is the first time she has posted wearing it. Ronaldo and Rodriguez made waves when they showed up together for the Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich in January 2017. In May of that year, they made their relationship Instagram official. The couple share five children with 8-year-old twins Eva Maria and Mateo, daughters Alana, 7, and Bella, 3, and Cristiano Jr., a 15-year-old from a previous Ronaldo relationship. The couple also announced the death of Ángel, Bella's newborn twin brother, in April 2022. Given their lengthy relationship, there was always wonder about whether Ronaldo and Rodriguez would get married. During a Netflix docuseries, 'I Am Georgina,' Rodriguez discussed their future together. "They're always joking about the wedding, 'When is the wedding?'" Rodriguez said about her friends in the documentary, which was released earlier this year. "Since Jennifer Lopez's song, 'The Ring Or When,' came out, they started singing it to me. And well, this is not up to me." Ronaldo, then, chimed in. "I always tell her, when we get that click," he said, while snapping his fingers. "Like everything with our life, and I know she knows what I'm talking about. It could be in a year, or it could be in six months, or it could be in a month. I'm 1,000% sure that it'll happen." Ronaldo, the Portuguese star, currently plays for Al-Nassr, a club in the Saudi Pro League. He signed a two-year extension in June that keeps him with the club through June 2027.

Is 'KPop Demon Hunters 2' happening? Here's what we've heard about the hit Netflix movie's future

It's safe to say 'KPop Demon Hunters' is a Netflix sensation by this point, right? Not only is it the streaming service's most-watched animated original ever, it's overtaken movies like "The Adam Project" and "Bird Box" to become Netflix's fourth most-watched English-language movie of all time. Nearly two months on from the hit animated musical film's release, it is still the platform's No. 1 watch — 'Kandahar' stole that spot briefly, but Huntrix has already reclaimed the top spot — and "KPop Demon Hunters" songs and scenes continue to generate tons of buzz all over social media. It wasn't just a hit with fans, either; critics love it, too. The movie's currently sitting at an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and has (rightly) won praise for its characters, its vibrant visuals and that killer soundtrack. Seeing as it is most definitely Netflix's next big thing, it only makes sense that fans are desperate to know whether 'KPop Demon Hunters 2' is something we can look forward to streaming in the future. At the time of writing, we do not have a firm answer from Netflix, so I've done my best to try and answer that question as best I can. Here's everything we know about the future of 'KPop Demon Hunters' right now. At the end of July, TheWrap reported that Netflix was (understandably) looking to capitalize big time on the 'KPop Demon Hunters' craze as much as possible. The movie was apparently being viewed as Netflix's version of 'Frozen," and the report claimed there were plans for two animated sequels, a live-action remake and/or maybe even a stage musical. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. However, we still haven't had an official announcement from Netflix, and thus still do not know whether 'KPop Demon Hunters' will return, or how big that theoretical return could be. The latest news on the matter comes from a recent interview The Hollywood Reporter published with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and Netflix film boss, Dan Lin. 'I think it's going to be part of our lives for a bit. I don't see the fandom slowing down,' Kang said. 'We hit an all-time high in viewership in week five, which is absolutely insane.' It's Dan Lin who makes it sound like we've not seen the last of Rumi, Zoey and Mira. Lin adds that Netflix is 'excited to explore what could be the next adventure for Huntrix.' ''KPDH's' success comes from its original, fresh story so if we do embark on a sequel, we would want to take our time to make sure that any future stories we tell with our favorite demon hunters retains the flair and uniqueness of the first film', Lin adds. That's a promising stance for a potential 'KPop Demon Hunters' sequel, seeing as both directors have already expressed interest in revisiting or expanding that world. When asked by ScreenRant whether they were thinking of follow-up ideas, Kang had this to say: 'Always. There are always side stories, and there are things we've thought of while making this one. There are a lot of questions that are answered, but not fully. I think there are a lot of pockets that we can explore.' Similarly, Appelhans told Shine On Media: 'Because we had to pack so much into 85 minutes — it's a pretty big idea and a lot of pieces — there are so many unanswered questions, in a good way, and so many avenues that could be their own story, so many possibilities.' So, in essence, if all the major players can agree on the right story, or the right new way to explore this universe, then it sure seems likely that 'KPop Demon Hunters 2' is in the pipeline. And seeing as the hype shows no signs of dying down just yet, I'd be shocked if the movie's future wasn't confirmed soon. In the meantime, we'll just have to be content with streaming 'KPop Demon Hunters' on Netflix on repeat. Hope my neighbors aren't sick of hearing 'Soda Pop' and 'Takedown' on repeat yet… Looking for something new to watch while you wait for more 'KPop Demon Hunters' news? Denzel Washington Takes On New York City In Spike Lee's ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Trailer

The official trailer for the newest Spike Lee Joint has been released. Starring Denzel Washington, Highest 2 Lowest finds the acclaimed actor in a fight for his family and his morals. The film, directed by Lee, is an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 Japanese kidnapping drama High and Low, which is loosely based on the 1959 novel King's Ransom by Ed McBain (Evan Hunter). According to the official description, Washington leads as a titan music mogul, widely known for having the 'best ears in the business.' The film marks the fifth collaboration between the actor and director, with the last standing as Inside Man, released back in 2006. Their previous works are Mo' Better Blues, Malcolm X, and He Got Game. Highest 2 Lowest is written by Alan Fox and Lee, and developed and produced by Apple and A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures. It debuted out of competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and will hit theaters on Aug. 15, 2025, before arriving on Apple TV+ on September 5. The film also stars A$AP Rocky, Ilfenesh Hadera, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, and Ice Spice. 'Yeah, don't sleep on A$AP,' Lee exclaimed of the Harlem rapper's major acting debut. 'In this film, Denzel and A$AP go toe to toe. 'What's interesting is, even before I got involved with this film, I always thought that A$AP looked like he could be Denzel's son,' he details. 'There's a big resemblance. So when you see it on the screen, it adds an element of father and son. Don't sleep on A$AP. Don't sleep on A$AP.' Watch the trailer for Highest 2 Lowest above.
