Driver hacked to death in Bantwal
Mangaluru: A pickup driver was hacked to death in Kolthamajal, Addoor, under Bantwal Rural police station limits on Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Abdul Rahiman. Preliminary investigation suggests that the assailants, suspected to have arrived on a two-wheeler, attacked him with a sword (talwar).
Dakshina Kannada SP Yathish N said the incident occurred when Rahiman and another person had gone to dump sand near a house. "We are yet to ascertain how many people were involved. While Rahiman succumbed to his injuries, the other person, Kalandar Shafi, sustained injuries," he said.
As a precautionary measure following this incident, prohibitory orders have been issued under Section 163 of the BNSS in taluks including Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Kadaba, Sullia and Mangalore Commissionerate limits from Tuesday 6pm till May 30, 6 pm.
District minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, in a post on X, condemned the killing and said he had spoken to the DG & IGP, ADGP (law and order), DC, and SP, instructing them to identify the culprits and take stringent legal action and maintain vigil in sensitive areas. "This seems to be a systematic attempt to disturb peace in Dakshina Kannada district. The motive is still unclear. I have also spoken to the home minister. I appeal to the public not to fall for rumours," he urged.
A large crowd gathered outside a private hospital in Falnir, where the injured victim was admitted, demanding immediate arrest of those involved. It is alleged that the assailants had called Rahiman under the pretext of delivering sand. The crowd also voiced anger over police inaction against those who allegedly delivered inflammatory speeches at a VHP event in Bajpe on May 25, where a demand was made for an NIA probe into the murder of Suhas Shetty.
CPI(M) Dakshina Kannada district secretary Muneer Katipalla condemned the incident and urged public to maintain peace. He held BJP MLAs, the Sangh Parivar's hate speeches, and the state govt's inaction accountable for the deteriorating situation in the region. Muneer alleged that over the past three months, hate speech has been rampant following incidents like the Kudupu mob lynching and the murder of Suhas Shetty.
The CPI(M) district committee has demanded that police expose both those directly involved in Rahiman's murder and those inciting tensions through provocative speeches. The party has also called for tighter security arrangements.

Bharat Mata cannot be made a topic of debate: Guv
Thiruvananthapuram: Governor Rajendra Arlekar said that the concept of Bharat Mata should not be made controversial. "Indians grow up reciting the pledge as brothers and sisters, and children of one mother. The concept of Bharat Mata should be seen above any ideology or politics one believes in. Making Bharat Mata a subject of dispute is most unfortunate," the governor said. While speaking at a function organized to distribute the awards to students who won the Mann Ki Baat-based quiz on Sunday, the governor said, "It is happy to note that now those who were hesitant to chant Bharat Mata ki Jai have started chanting the same. Bharat Mata cannot be made a topic of debate or discussion. Can our mother be made a topic of discussion?" The governor's statement came in the wake of the boycott by agriculture minister P Prasad from a function organized at Raj Bhavan on the occasion of environment day. The minister boycotted the event citing the reason that a picture of Bharat Mata used by the Sangh Parivar was kept at the official function of the govt. The Raj Bhavan went ahead with the event and offered floral tributes before the picture of Bharat Mata by the Governor. The minister later inaugurated a related event at the govt secretariat. The CPI organized an event on Saturday in all districts by hoisting the national flag and planting trees as a mark of protest against the governor. In the event held at the state headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, the CPI leaders raised Bharat Mata ki jai slogans.

Centre hands over Bajrang Dal activist Suhas Shetty murder case to NIA
ANI 08 Jun 2025, 20:40 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 8 (ANI): The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has handed over the investigation into the murder of former Bajrang Dal activist Suhas Shetty to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), marking a significant move amid rising concerns over possible larger conspiracies behind the incident. Shetty, a prominent right-wing youth leader associated with the Bajrang Dal in Karnataka's coastal belt, was brutally murdered last month in Sullia town of Dakshina Kannada district. The activist, in his early 30s, was attacked by unidentified assailants while returning home late at night. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The incident triggered widespread protests in the region, with local Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) units alleging a targeted killing. Official sources, privy to the development, told ANI that 'the MHA has handed over the case to the NIA for investigation and registration.' On May 1, a group of people came in two vehicles and blocked the way of Shetty, who was moving in a car with his friends. They then hacked Shetty to death. With the latest arrests by Mangaluru Police, a total of 11 persons have been held so far in the case. (ANI)
