Bajrang Dal member Suhas Shetty was publicly assaulted and brutally murdered by accused Abdul Safwan and others using lethal weapons in the Bajpe area of Mangaluru city in May this year. The killing was intended to spread terror in society. The NIA, which took over the case from the local police in June, searched the residences of 12 arrested individuals and various suspects. The searches were carried out in Mangaluru, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan, leading to the seizure of various digital devices, including 11 mobile phones, 13 SIM cards, and eight memory cards, along with incriminating documents. Investigation into the conspiracy behind the killing is continuing, stated a release from the NIA. It may be recalled that the ministry of home affairs directed the NIA to take over the Suhas Shetty murder probe. According to the order dated June 7, the central govt took cognisance of the FIR registered at Bajpe police station, which pertains to the attack on Suhas Shetty while he was travelling in a car with a few others. Shetty was allegedly attacked by Safwan and eight others and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. NIA raids 18 places in Karnataka over Hindu activist Suhas Shetty's killing

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out raids at 18 locations in Karnataka on Saturday in connection with the killing of Bajrang Dal member Suhas Shetty. The NIA took over the case from the state police in June, and as part of its probe, conducted raids at 18 locations.(HT/File) The Hindu activist was hacked to death by a group of assailants, including accused Abdul Safwan, in May this year in Mangaluru City. The NIA took over the case from the state police in June, and as part of its probe, conducted raids at 18 locations. Several digital devices, including 11 mobile phones, 13 SIM cards, and eight memory cards, along with other incriminating documents, were seized during searches across Mangaluru, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan districts, the NIA said in a statement. The locations searched today were linked to 12 people arrested in connection with Suhas Shetty's murder, which the probe agency said was committed "to spread terror" in the society. On May 1, Suhas Shetty was travelling with five others in Mangaluru's Bajpe area when his vehicle was intercepted by a group carrying deadly weapons. He was subsequently hacked to death, and the incident was captured on CCTV. The clip showed the assailants attacking him with machetes and swords. Following his death, a prohibitory order under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita was imposed in the area for five days. A case was first registered at the Bajpe Police Station, but chorus soon grew seeking an NIA investigation. The probe agency took over the case later in June and has been investigating ever since. While multiple locations have been raided, further investigation into the case is still underway.

NIA Raids 14 Locations In Karnataka In Hindu Activist Suhas Shetty Murder Case

The sleuths of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are conducting simultaneous raids at 14 locations on Saturday across Mangaluru district in connection with Hindu activist and rowdy sheeter Sushas Shetty murder case. Sources confirmed that the raids are being conducted at 10 locations in Bajpe and four locations in Suathkal towns. The raids are underway at many residences and offices at these locations. The authorities are conducting a search of the properties and verifying documents. The murder case of Sushas Shetty has triggered revenge killings and a series of stabbing incidents in the coastal region, and communal tension threatened to spread to other regions of the state. The Karnataka Police had arrested 12 accused persons in connection with the case. Following the demand by BJP leaders and Union Ministers from the state, the Centre has handed over the probe to the NIA. The BJP has alleged a foreign hand and the role of the banned PFI outfit behind the murder. The parents of Suhas Shetty have also emphasised that only the NIA probe could give them justice in the case. Hindu activist Suhas Shetty was hacked to death on May 1 by a gang using machetes and swords. The killers who came in two vehicles had attacked him while he was travelling in his car with associates in the limits of the Bajpe police station. The shocking video of the killing had raised concerns. Suhas Shetty was a Bajrang Dal activist and the prime accused in the murder of Mohammad Fazil, a resident of Suratkal. Shetty and his associates had allegedly killed Fazil at a public place on July 28, 2022, in retaliation for the murder of BJP activist Praveen Kumar Nettaru. Nettaru, a BJP worker from the same communally sensitive region, was hacked to death during the height of the 'hijab' row. The incident occurred in Bellare near Sullia in the Dakshina Kannada district. Nataru's murder had triggered revenge killings and a spate of stabbing incidents across the state. Suhas Shetty had come out of prison on bail in the murder case of Fazil. Weeks after the killing of Suhas Shetty, a 42-year-old Imtiyaz, a pickup driver and secretary of a local mosque, was hacked to death in broad daylight near Ira Kodi in Bantwal taluk in Mangaluru as revenge for Suhas Shetty's murder.

Probe into Suhas Shetty, Ashraf murders conducted using evidence-based scientific method, says Police Commissioner

Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy on Monday said the police have probed into the murders of Suhas Shetty at Bajpe and Ashraf at Kudupu using an evidence-based scientific method. Anyone with any additional information or evidence may provide it directly to the police instead of posting it on social media platforms, he said. With the Suhas Shetty case now being taken up by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Mr. Reddy provided details of the two investigations conducted by the Mangaluru police to the media here. 'Whenever we provided details about the progress of the probe to those who claimed justice had not been served for the victims and their families, the information was often misused,' he regretted. Police have so far examined more than 100 people and will continue to investigate others if they find any evidence in the Ashraf murder case. If people attempt to mislead the police and public through social media posts, action would be taken against them under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, Mr. Reddy cautioned. While the police would not harass innocent people, they would not spare the culprits, he asserted. There were allegations against the police that the accused had previously planned the place to attack Suhas Shetty, that many people had assembled prior to the attack, indicating they were party to it and that two women helped the accused to flee. The police meticulously examined CCTV and other video footage of the incident and realised that people instantly gathered at the spot when a car initially hit Suhas' vehicle, and that the two women had in fact objected to the action of the accused, the Police Commissioner clarified. Initial lapses There were initial lapses on the part of the police in not registering Ashraf's death as a murder case. Action was being taken against the officials concerned, even as they were being investigated, Mr. Reddy added. Additionally, there were allegations that the police did not take action against a few individuals, including the husband of the former local councillor. Though he was said to be present at the location, there was no evidence that he either assaulted the victim or provoked assailants, Mr. Reddy said. While a few people were assaulting the victim, a few others continued to play cricket at the location. Therefore, all of them could not be held parties to the crime. Probe was conducted based on available photographs of the location, the dead body, on the basis of footwear worn by the assailants, etc., in a scientific manner, he said. Regarding hate speech, Mr. Reddy stated that the police have the authority to arrest individuals making provocative speeches on the spot. Even though those accused of delivering hate speeches get bail, repeated offenders would be suitably dealt with under the law, he said.
