NIA Raids 14 Locations In Karnataka In Hindu Activist Suhas Shetty Murder Case
Sources confirmed that the raids are being conducted at 10 locations in Bajpe and four locations in Suathkal towns. The raids are underway at many residences and offices at these locations. The authorities are conducting a search of the properties and verifying documents.
The murder case of Sushas Shetty has triggered revenge killings and a series of stabbing incidents in the coastal region, and communal tension threatened to spread to other regions of the state. The Karnataka Police had arrested 12 accused persons in connection with the case. Following the demand by BJP leaders and Union Ministers from the state, the Centre has handed over the probe to the NIA. The BJP has alleged a foreign hand and the role of the banned PFI outfit behind the murder.
The parents of Suhas Shetty have also emphasised that only the NIA probe could give them justice in the case.
Hindu activist Suhas Shetty was hacked to death on May 1 by a gang using machetes and swords. The killers who came in two vehicles had attacked him while he was travelling in his car with associates in the limits of the Bajpe police station.
The shocking video of the killing had raised concerns.
Suhas Shetty was a Bajrang Dal activist and the prime accused in the murder of Mohammad Fazil, a resident of Suratkal. Shetty and his associates had allegedly killed Fazil at a public place on July 28, 2022, in retaliation for the murder of BJP activist Praveen Kumar Nettaru.
Nettaru, a BJP worker from the same communally sensitive region, was hacked to death during the height of the 'hijab' row. The incident occurred in Bellare near Sullia in the Dakshina Kannada district. Nataru's murder had triggered revenge killings and a spate of stabbing incidents across the state.
Suhas Shetty had come out of prison on bail in the murder case of Fazil.
Weeks after the killing of Suhas Shetty, a 42-year-old Imtiyaz, a pickup driver and secretary of a local mosque, was hacked to death in broad daylight near Ira Kodi in Bantwal taluk in Mangaluru as revenge for Suhas Shetty's murder.

Kerala HC commutes life term of IS ex-operative, who was trained in Syria, to 10 years of RI
KOCHI: Kerala high court commuted the life sentence imposed on Subahani Haja alias Haja Moidheen of Thodupuzha, an accused in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case for joining the proscribed terrorist organisation ISIS and fighting for them in Mosul, Iraq, in 2015, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A bench comprising Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar on Thursday, while considering Haja's appeal challenging his conviction and sentence, upheld the rest of the findings and sentences imposed on him by a special court under various sections of UAPA and IPC. According to the prosecution, Haja travelled to Istanbul in Turkey on a tourist visa in April 2015, crossed the border into Iraq and underwent physical and arms training in Mosul. He was deployed on the war front but sustained an injury during training and was hospitalised. Following repeated requests, he was allowed to return to India in Sept 2015, after which he worked as a salesman-cum-accountant at Kadayanallur, Tamil Nadu, for about a year. In 2016, NIA arrested him upon receiving information about his association with ISIS. In 2020, the special court, Ernakulam, sentenced Haja to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh under Section 20 of UAPA (membership of a proscribed terrorist organisation). He was also sentenced to rigorous imprisonment totalling 19 years and fined Rs 2 lakh for other offences, including waging war against an Asiatic power in alliance with govt of India and supporting a terrorist organisation, with all sentences to run concurrently. On appeal, the division bench noted that the offences committed by Haja were grave and serious. However, it also considered the absence of prior criminal antecedents, his expression of repentance and the possibility of reformation. The court observed that after his return from Iraq, no specific overt acts were alleged against him except for an unsuccessful attempt to procure explosives. Further, it found that the special court had not stated any reason for awarding the maximum sentence under Section 20 of UAPA. In view of these factors, the bench commuted his life sentence to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

BEST credit society fraud probe: EOW begins inquiry into ₹12.41-crore Lonavala property deal; Sena (UBT)-MNS calls it political vendetta
MUMBAI: With less than a week to go before the keenly watched BEST Employees' Credit Society elections, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has launched a preliminary enquiry against eight senior office-bearers of the society over alleged irregularities in the purchase of a Lonavala property. The inquiry adds to a parallel probe by the state cooperation department, fuelling political tensions between the newly allied Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on one side and the BJP-led Mahayuti on the other. BEST credit society fraud probe: EOW begins inquiry into ₹ 12.41-crore Lonavala property deal; Sena (UBT)-MNS calls it political vendetta The credit society — controlled by the Sena (UBT)'s BEST Kamgar Sena and now in alliance with the MNS for the August 18 polls — is accused of paying ₹18.04 crore for a rest house in Lonavala, well above the ready reckoner rate of ₹5.63 crore, allegedly causing a loss of ₹12.41 crore to members. The complainant, BEST employee and society member Rajendra Gore, alleges the purchase violated cooperative rules, including acquiring property outside the society's jurisdiction without the registrar's permission. The EOW inquiry names chairman Kirtan Kori, secretary Umesh Sarang, directors Bhiwaji Sawant, Raju Sasane, Bhaskar Toraskar, Pramod Rane, former chairman Sanjay Bhagare, and CEO Lalit Parab — all affiliated with the Sena (UBT). Police officials confirmed that those named are being summoned for questioning. This latest action follows a notice dated August 13 from the divisional joint registrar of cooperative societies, appointing an inquiry team to examine the society's 2024-25 records. Separately, the EOW is also investigating a complaint by Vivekanand Ghag alleging ₹24 crore in irregularities. Sena (UBT) and MNS leaders have dismissed the charges as a political ploy. 'Since the Thackeray brothers joined hands for the BEST credit society polls, the whole state is watching. Suddenly, there are allegations. Earlier there were no complaints,' said Kori, who previously headed the Utkarsh Panel. BEST Kamgar Sena president Suhas Samant accused BJP MLC Prasad Lad of instigating the probes to create 'confusion among voters', noting that the society recently earned an 'A' grade in a government audit. Lad, however, defended the inquiries, saying, 'If there are complaints of irregularities, how can we keep quiet?' He insisted that both the cooperation department and the EOW are acting on specific complaints and evidence. The political stakes are unusually high for what is typically a low-profile cooperative poll. The Sena (UBT) will contest 18 of the 21 seats, the MNS two, and the BEST SC/ST Employees Welfare Association one. If victorious, the MNS will also get a nominated director post. The Mahayuti's BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena are contesting as the opposition. The elections mark the first time the Thackeray cousins' parties are contesting together in any poll, seen by both camps as a test run for a broader civic election alliance — and by rivals as a potential threat worth disrupting.

VHP leader's death anniversary passes off peacefully in Odisha's Kandhamal district
Saraswati's death anniversary is observed according to the Hindu calendar, Jalespeta ashram head Swami Jeevan Muktananda Puri said. While security was especially tightened around Saraswati's ashrams at Chakapada and Jalespeta, the entire district was placed under a security blanket as the VHP leader's assassination on August 23, 2008 led to large-scale violence that claimed 38 lives. Phulbani (Odisha), Aug 15 (PTI) The 17th death anniversary of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati passed off peacefully in Odisha's Kandhamal district amidst tightened security arrangements on Friday, official said. The monk and four of his associates were gunned downed while they were celebrating Janmashtami at Jalespeta ashram under Tumudibandh police station in the district. Kandhamal SP Harish BC said security was tightened up across the district in view of Saraswati's death anniversary, which in previous years had sparked violence in the region. Apart from two ashrams, armed police were also deployed at vulnerable points, the SP said, adding that no report of any untoward incident was received from any place so far. Though it was claimed that Maoists were involved in the killing of Saraswati and his associates, the VHP continued to demand the arrest of the mastermind of the mass murder. 'The state government is committed to arresting all culprits responsible for the killings,' Kandhamal MP Sukant Panigrahi said. Meanwhile, opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress criticised the BJP government in the state for not making public the report of the commission that probed the killing of the VHP leader. Soon after the BJP came to power in the state last year, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan assured that the inquiry commission report on the killing of Saraswati would be made public. Justice Sarat Chandra Mohapatra was appointed as the one-man commission to probe Saraswati's killing and the subsequent riots in 2008. However, he passed away in 2012 before completing the inquiry. Then, Justice A S Naidu was appointed to head the panel, which submitted its report in two volumes to the home secretary in December 2015. However, the findings of the commission have not been made public either by the previous BJD government or the present BJP regime.
