SAD faction rumoured to back Balwant Singh Rajoana as Jathedar, while Sarbat Khalsa backs Jagtar Singh Hawara

Time of India24-05-2025
AMRITSAR: There have been widespread rumours suggesting that a faction within the
(SAD) is actively promoting the idea of appointing Balwant Singh Rajoana, who was convicted for his alleged involvement in the assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh and is currently incarcerated at Central Jail, Patiala, as the Jathedar of Akal Takht even as the organisers of the Sarbat Khalsa, who appointed Jagtar Singh Hawara—the alleged mastermind behind Beant Singh's assassination and currently held in Tihar Jail—are reportedly advocating for the acceptance of Hawara as the Jathedar of Akal Takht by the SAD.

Bhai Balwant Singh Gopala, former President of the Sikh Youth Federation, Bhinderanwala, said that Balwant Singh Rajoana has consistently been expressing support for the SAD and praised the leadership of the Badal family. Given Rajoana's longstanding alignment with SAD, Gopala said that it would not come as a surprise if he were appointed to the prestigious position of Jathedar of Akal Takht, especially considering that the SAD holds a majority in the General House of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which announces such decisions.
In 2022, the SAD president
had announced Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana, sister of Balwant Singh Rajoana as joint candidate of SAD-BSP and all Panthic organizations for Sangruru Lok Sabha by elections.
However, Gopala also emphasised that while Rajoana's appointment as Jathedar of Akal Takht is not a certainty, the possibility remains, particularly in light of opposition to the current officiating Jathedar, Bhai Kuldeep Singh Gargaj.
He speculated that, in the future, a permanent Jathedar of Akal Takht might be appoint in a manner similar to how Gargaj serves as the Jathedar of Takht Kesgarh Sahib. "The narrative being made about Rajoana could be a tactic to gauge the panthic mood," he said.
The credence to the closeness of Rajoana with the Badals and his influence in a section of SAD is evident from the decision taken by SGPC on Friday after it decided to temporarily defer the matter of displaying a portrait of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh in the Central Sikh Museum—after Rajoana wrote a two-page letter raising objections to SGPC's decision of displaying Manmohan Singh's portrain to the SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami from Central Jail, Patiala on May 14.

SGPC Secretary Partap Singh informed that the SGPC's Executive Committee approved the installation of Dr Manmohan Singh's portrait in the Central Sikh Museum in the recent past, but following the objections raised by various groups, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami has ordered the matter to be put on hold for the time being. However, he didn't inform about the persons or the organisations who objected to the SGPC's decision on the portrait.
"SGPC respects the sentiments of the Sikh community and believes that a general consensus among Sikhs is essential on this matter," he said, adding that the decision regarding the portrait will be reconsidered in a future meeting of the Executive Committee.
Meanwhile, Jarnail Singh Sakhira, the chief organiser of the 2015 Sarbat Khalsa that appointed Jagtar Singh Hawara as Jathedar of Akal Takht, has urged those opposing Hawara's appointment to recognise the legitimacy of a Jathedar chosen by the Sangat rather than by political parties or religious groups.
"The time has come for all to acknowledge the authority of a Jathedar appointed by the people, not by external influences," Sakhira said.
He further criticised the current officiating Jathedar, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, claiming that he lacks widespread acceptance among the Sikh community.
Sakhira also pointed out that the family of Bhai Amrik Singh, the late President of the All India Sikh Students Federation who died during Operation Bluestar, informed the Sarbat Khalsa organisers that they will not accept siropas (robes of honour) from Giani Gargaj during an upcoming ceremony scheduled for June 6 to mark the Operation Bluestar anniversary.

Today, there has been talk of forming a minority education authority in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. With this, the new minority institutions that will be formed will get approval, and minority does not mean only Muslims, minorities also include Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis so that everyone will get rights. I think it is a very positive step taken in that direction." Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand Cabinet made a historic decision by deciding to introduce the Uttarakhand Minority Educational Institutions Bill, 2025, in the coming session of the Legislative Assembly starting on August 19. Until now, the status of minority educational institutions has been given only to the Muslim community. According to the release, the Bill seeks to extend the benefits of Minority Educational Institutions status to the minority communities other than Muslims as well. Once enacted, it will permit the study of Gurmukhi and Pali also in recognised minority educational institutions. The Uttarakhand Madrasa Education Board Act, 2016 and the Uttarakhand Non-Government Arabic and Persian Madrasa Recognition Rules, 2019, will stand repealed from July 1, 2026. Under the proposed Bill, this facility will also be available to other minority communities, i.e Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Buddhists and Parsis. This is the first such Act in the country, aimed at establishing a transparent process for granting recognition to educational institutions set up by minority communities in the state, while ensuring quality and excellence in education. Key features of the Act include the formation of an authority - an "Uttarakhand State Authority for Minority Education" will be constituted in the state to grant the status of minority educational institutions. It includes mandatory recognition, ie any educational institution established by Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, or Parsi communities must obtain recognition from the Authority to qualify as a minority educational institution. Protection of institutional rights - the law does not interfere in the establishment and administration of minority educational institutions, but ensures that educational excellence is maintained. Mandatory conditions - To obtain recognition, educational institutions must be registered under the Societies Act, Trust Act, or Companies Act. Ownership of land, bank accounts, and other assets must be in the name of the institution. Recognition can be withdrawn in cases of financial mismanagement, lack of transparency, or activities against religious and social harmony. Monitoring and examination - The authority will ensure that education is imparted in accordance with the standards set by the Board of School Education, Uttarakhand, and that student evaluations remain fair and transparent. The Act introduces significant changes for the minority community's institutions in the state by establishing a transparent process for their recognition. It ensures the quality of education is maintained while protecting the Constitutional rights of minorities. Additionally, the state government gains the authority to monitor the functioning of these institutions and issue necessary directives as needed.

Hate crime in UK: Teenagers attack Sikh men, remove their turbans

Another incident of a hate crime against Indians has been reported, this time from UK. A shocking video has emerged, in which three teenagers were seen assaulting two Sikh men on August 15 outside a railway station in Wolverhampton. Video of the attack went viral on social media, where the victims were seen lying on the ground as one of the assailants kicked them until being stopped by another. The incident has sparked anger and criticism. The turbans of the Sikh men were forcibly removed, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal claimed. The teenagers behind the concerning attack were released on bail after being arrested. Badal flagged the issue, describing the attack as "horrific" and calling on external affairs minister, S Jaishankar to take up the matter with the UK government. "I strongly condemn the horrific attack on two elderly Sikh men in Wolverhampton, UK, during the course of which one Sikh's turban was removed forcibly. This racist hate crime targets the Sikh community, which always seeks Sarbat Da Bhala (the well-being of all). Known for its benevolence and compassion, the Sikh community deserves safety and respect worldwide. I urge West Midlands Police and the UK Home Office to act swiftly & deliver justice the victims. I also urge Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to raise this issue with the UK government to ensure the safety of the Sikh diaspora. Meanwhile, I appeal to all Sikh brethren settled abroad to support each other in this hour of need," Badal said in a post on X. British Transport Police, condemned the act, calling it intolerable. "We won't tolerate this sort of behaviour on the railway network and have launched a full investigation. Three boys were arrested at the scene, and enquiries are ongoing," it said and asked witnesses to report to them, it said. "I am aware of an incident that took place at Wolverhampton Railway Station with a video currently circulating on social media. My thoughts are with all of those affected," local MP Sureena Brackenridge also criticised the incident. "As a city, Wolverhampton is proud of its community, which is strong, diverse, and resilient. At times like these, it is vital that we come together in calm and unity and allow the relevant authorities to undertake their work. At this moment, I thank the police for their swift and serious response, which has seen arrests made, and their ongoing work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all of those in our city," she added.
