Egypt secures gas supplies to all sectors with four FSRUs vessels
This plan aims to enhance Egypt's ability to secure all the needs of the electricity sector, as well as various industrial and economic sectors, in a safe and sustainable manner.
This plan keeps pace with regional and international changes in the energy market and enables the country to diversify inputs to the national grid when necessary.
It includes expanding the import of advanced floating regasification units, which represent a strategic addition to diversifying inputs to the national natural gas grid to include local field production, pipeline import gas, and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Several agreements have been signed with leading international companies to lease modern Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs), increasing the system's capacity and supporting supply stability during peak periods.
In parallel, work has been underway to equip several new berths and connect them to the national natural gas grid.
This will achieve a sustainable addition to Egypt's natural gas infrastructure, while ensuring a balance between supply and consumption areas to maximize the stability of the national grid.
The quays at Sumed and Sonker ports in Ain Sokhna, and the United Gas Derivatives Company quay in Damietta, have been prepared for the final step of connecting the FSRUs to their designated quays, according to the planned schedule.
This will bring regasification capacity during peak consumption in 2025 to 2,700 million cubic feet per day.
This includes the Hoegh Galleon unit in Ain Sokhna starting in 2024, the Energos Eskimo and Energos Power units, which will be connected to the Sumed and Sonker port quays in Ain Sokhna, and the Winter unit, which will be connected to the United Gas Derivatives Company quay in Damietta.
This brings the total number of FSRUs available in Egypt during the peak summer season to four.
This comes in addition to close cooperation with Jordan, which has resulted in the arrival of another FSRU, 'Energy Force,' which will arrive at the port of Aqaba in Jordan in late July to connect to the Arab Gas Pipeline.
This provides a new addition to both countries by providing a new gateway to the national grids, enhancing the ability to respond to any emergencies this summer with a regasification capacity of up to 750 million cubic feet per day.

ETA welcomes dialogue with business community to build trust, enhance tax system: Chief
Rasha Abdel Aal, Head of the Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA), held a meeting on Sunday with a delegation from the Egyptian-African Businessmen Association to explore avenues for cooperation and listen to the delegation's suggestions and concerns regarding challenges facing the business community. The meeting aimed to improve the tax system and achieve greater fairness. The meeting was held in line with directives from the Minister of Finance to maintain ongoing dialogue between the Tax Authority and all stakeholders within the tax ecosystem. Abdel Aal emphasised the authority's commitment to building trust with the business community by actively listening to their real concerns through institutionalised and regular dialogue. She noted that the Ministry of Finance and the Tax Authority continue to implement legislative and procedural reforms designed to simplify tax processes, enhance transparency, and encourage businesses in the informal sector to join the formal economy. She highlighted that the first tax relief package, launched in February 2025, represented a significant milestone in resolving longstanding disputes and clarifying tax procedures. Law No. 6 of 2025 introduced a simplified tax regime for businesses with an annual turnover not exceeding EGP 20m, offering fixed tax rates based on business size and broad exemptions to encourage small businesses to formalise. Abdel Aal added that the initiative also set a cap on late penalties at 100% of the original tax amount. Additionally, Law No. 5 of 2025 allows taxpayers to settle estimated tax assessment disputes for tax periods ending before 2020 by paying a portion of the tax owed. For audited tax cases, settlement remains possible by paying the principal amount, with a complete waiver of delay fines or additional tax. She stressed that the authority welcomes all compliant business owners and there is no need to fear tax procedures when there is transparency and full compliance. Abdel Aal also underlined the importance of dealing exclusively with registered taxpayers, whether in traditional transactions or digital platforms. Abdel Aal further explained that the integration of the electronic invoicing system with the risk management platform enables real-time detection of fraudulent invoices. Companies issuing such invoices are immediately blocked from the system, while those dealing with them are also flagged, with no recognition of these invoices permitted in input tax deductions. This approach, she said, supports tax fairness and helps prevent fraud. During the meeting, representatives of the Egyptian-African Businessmen Association commended the authority's reform measures and its expanding communication channels. They affirmed their commitment to supporting the state and increasing tax revenues as a vital source of funding for the national treasury. They described the recent relief measures as a genuine breakthrough, though they noted that certain practical challenges remain. The delegation explained that they approach these issues from a developmental perspective focused on public benefit and acknowledged what they saw as a positive shift in the authority's performance, particularly under Abdel Aal's informed and open leadership. Nevertheless, they pointed out practical difficulties facing honest taxpayers, such as mismatches between declared business volumes and actual tax assessments, and obstacles in recovering customs guarantees without first clarifying tax status. Among their proposals, the representatives suggested forming joint committees between the Tax Authority and the Customs Authority to address issues related to guarantee recovery. They also called for allowing the deduction of reasonable business expenses—such as transport and employee travel costs—even in the absence of official invoices, provided these expenses are proportionate to business size. In addition, they highlighted the importance of addressing the culture of fear associated with taxation. In response, Tax Authority officials listened carefully and pledged to work promptly to resolve the concerns raised by the association's members.

Egypt imports 345,000 tonnes of food, agricultural products in one week
The National Food Safety Authority has announced that Egypt received approximately 2,060 food shipments last week, with a combined weight of around 345,000 tonnes, imported by 910 companies. According to a report issued by the Authority's media centre, the imports included wheat, various oils, local fava beans, and soybeans. Ukraine topped the list of exporting countries to Egypt during the week, followed by Russia, Indonesia, and the United States, out of a total of 84 countries supplying food products to the Egyptian market. Alexandria Port remained the primary gateway for incoming food shipments, handling 660 shipments. It was followed by Cairo International Airport with 510 shipments and Ain Sokhna Port with 265. In terms of customs clearance, 1,064 food shipments were released under provisional (temporary) clearance, while 475 shipments were processed through the fast-track release system. The Grievance Committee also issued incident reports for 90 shipments during this period, and 85 import licences were granted to importers. Meanwhile, the Authority reported that, according to the General Administration for Exports and Imports, Egypt exported around 165,000 tonnes of food products last week through 3,810 shipments handled by 1,250 exporting companies. These exports covered roughly 644 types of food items, including vegetables and tubers, processed vegetables and fruits, flour and grain products, among others. Among vegetable exports, beans of various types ranked first with 8,000 tonnes, followed by potatoes at approximately 7,000 tonnes, and mixed frozen vegetables at 6,000 tonnes. In total, 50 different vegetable products were exported, amounting to around 45,000 tonnes. As for fruits, strawberries led with a total of 10,000 tonnes exported last week, followed by mangoes and red grapes at roughly 5,000 tonnes each. Altogether, 30 types of fruits were exported, totalling around 26,000 tonnes. Egyptian food exports were distributed across 170 international markets during the week, with Sudan, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and Russia among the top importers. Regarding export terminals, Alexandria Port again topped the list with 710 export shipments, followed by Damietta Port with 449 shipments and Cairo International Airport with 435. To support food exports, the Authority issued 750 health certificates last week under the system introduced earlier this year, aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety standards and boosting international confidence in Egyptian products.
