Ministers to welcome Kanwariyas with flower showers: CM
Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced that all her ministers, MLAs and senior government officials will personally receive Kanwariyas with flower showers at every entry point into the city during the upcoming Kanwar Yatra. The announcement came after Gupta met representatives of various Kanwar committees at the Delhi Secretariat. It follows the government's recent decision to transfer up to ₹ 10 lakh to each committee to organise pilgrim camps during the holy month of Sawan, which begins on July 23.
'This is the government's first Kanwar event, and our aim is to make it the most well-coordinated yet,' the chief minister said. She added that a new system has been introduced to issue permissions to Kanwar committees within 72 hours, and each camp will be eligible for up to 1,200 units of free electricity.
'At every entry point, secure corridors, cleanliness, lighting and medical support will be ensured,' Gupta said, promising equal support even for the smallest of camps.
Crackdown on drug trafficking
In a separate event on Thursday, Gupta launched a citywide awareness campaign against drug use and trafficking, coinciding with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
'In just the first four months of 2025, Delhi Police arrested over 1,100 individuals involved in drug trafficking,' she said at an event at Yamuna Sports Complex. 'FIRs have been filed, large quantities of narcotics have been seized, and many addicts have been referred to rehabilitation centres. The Delhi government, police and civil society are working in tandem to combat drug abuse—and public participation is crucial to this mission.'

Three days after a CNG pump chain owner was robbed of Rs 30 lakh, the Delhi Police arrested four men — including two of the victim's drivers. The two drivers — Satendar Singh, 35, and Anil, 54 — and their accomplices, Santosh Tripathi, 40, and Shammi, 49, were arrested from different parts of Delhi where they had fled to evade capture. The incident took place on Monday night when the victim, Karan Chopra, was with his family at his farmhouse in Ghitorni. A man posing as a delivery boy knocked on his door. As soon as Chopra opened the gate, he was pushed aside by the accused while three more men entered his house, police had said earlier. 'They told him that they have guns. They told him to stay calm, and let them leave with the cash. They took whatever money and jewellery was at the farmhouse. Then they took Chopra to his office on MG Road in Gurgaon in his own car to take out more cash,' a police officer had said. Following the arrests, police said a total of Rs 6.6 lakh of the stolen amount has been recovered from the four accused — Rs 3.15 lakh from Satendar; Rs 95,000 from Anil; Rs 1.95 lakh from Santosh; and Rs 10,000 from Shammi. Police said the two drivers, who were arrested late Wednesday, were the brains behind the whole operation. 'The two knew everything about the amount of cash that was kept at both the victim's house and his office. They called in the other two accused to help pull off the robbery for a fraction of the proceeds,' DCP (Southwest Delhi) Amit Goel said. After questioning Satendar and Anil, police arrested the other two accused on Thursday morning. 'Attempts to recover the rest of the stolen amount are being made,' a police official said.

Don't ruin your lives with drugs, HM tells students
Bengaluru: Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday urged students not to ruin their lives by getting addicted to drugs, as they have a bright future ahead. He was speaking after inaugurating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event organised by the Bengaluru City Police at the Kanteerava Stadium here. Over the past year, narcotics worth Rs 45 crore, including 4,000 kg of marijuana, have been seized, the minister said. Noting the involvement of foreign students in the drug trade, he said that more than 200 foreign nationals have been deported. Parameshwara stated that there is a global movement against drug and human trafficking, and efforts are being made to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. People need to understand both the physical and psychological harm caused by drugs, he underlined. Stating that legal action is being taken to curb drug rackets, the minister said law enforcement alone is not enough. Programmes are being developed to awaken the minds of the youth and to convey messages in a way that resonates with them, he said. If individuals continue drug activities even after awareness efforts, strict legal action will be taken, he warned. According to Parameshwara, in some states, assets of drug peddlers are being confiscated and action is being taken under the Goonda Act. In the previous legislative session, the chief minister declared to make Karnataka drug-free. Recalling how Punjab was once referred to as 'Udta Punjab' due to the severe impact of drugs, he said such a situation will not be allowed in Karnataka. The minister said even stricter measures will be taken to eliminate drug activities. Awareness campaigns have reached 6.5 lakh students across Karnataka. 'Students have a bright future and should not ruin their lives by getting addicted to drugs,' Parameshwara said.

Puducherry LG flags drug addiction among 23 per cent of government school students, cites survey
PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan on Thursday said 23% of school students in Puducherry, particularly those in government institutions, are addicted to drugs, citing a recent survey. 'We are in a dangerous situation. A survey shows that 23% of students in Puducherry are involved in drug abuse, especially government school students. Even parents are struggling to address the issue,' he said, speaking at the 'Routhiram Pazhagu – Drug-Free Puducherry' awareness walk organised by Bharathi Foundation. He warned of a strong police crackdown on drug peddlers and urged students to take responsibility for themselves and their peers. 'You must protect yourselves and also guide your friends. You have the ability to build a healthy and prosperous India,' he told them. The walk was organised in connection with International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and saw participation from hundreds of students, particularly those involved in the National Welfare Project. The event aimed to raise awareness and encourage student involvement in fighting drug abuse. MLA V Ramalingam, Inspector General of Police Sathya Sundaram, Narcotics Control Bureau Additional DGP Deepak Kaushik, and members of the Bharathi Foundation also took part. Later in the evening, the Puducherry Police organised a separate anti-drug awareness rally along Beach Road. The rally, which began at the Gandhi statue, was flagged off by the Lieutenant Governor. Students and officers took a pledge to fight against drug abuse, and a signature campaign was launched. Over 800 students from government and private schools participated. Chief Minister N Rangasamy, Home Minister A Namassivayam, DGP Shalini Singh, Secretary to Government N Kesavan and DIG Sathya Sundaram also took part in the programme.
