Speaker Khader questions lack of uniform SOP for police in DK
Mangaluru: Speaker UT Khader questioned police for not having a uniform SOP to control the law and order situation in Dakshina Kannada district.
The speaker told reporters on Thursday that he would write to home minister G Parameshwara and also discuss the matter with him.
"All police officers receive IPS training at the same academy, but why is there a different style of administration when they come to Dakshina Kannada? In cases about provocative messages on social media, provocative speeches, or assaults, the legal action varies depending on the officer," he said, insisting on a uniform SOP for police.
The new police chiefs of Mangaluru City police and Dakshina Kannada police have been taking stringent action, and the district saw 95% reformation in such crimes.
Khader said that the home minister should order a high-level probe into the failure of police in controlling law and order in the past. "Why should there not be a uniform SOP, and what is the actual problem here? Why were previous police officers not able to act tough against those who create unrest through social media messages and provocative speeches? The home minister should order a high-level probe in this direction.

This will help the govt to issue directions to police in the future," the speaker said.
On recent murders in the district, Khader said that there were discussions about the possibilities of retaliation after the murder of Suhas Shetty, and instances of provocative speeches were also reported thereafter, but police failed to act. On the murder of Abdul Rahiman, the speaker said that those who were very close to Rahiman committed the brutal murder.
People should keep those accused in the mob lynching case of Ashraf, and the murders of Suhas and Rahiman, away from society.
"They deserve stringent punishment. The district should be free from revenge murders and surrender politics to ensure overall development," he said.
Demanding an NIA probe into the murder of Rahiman and the mob lynching of Ashraf, Khader said that their parents and relatives should raise it. In response to a query on the motive behind the murder of Rahiman, the speaker said police should disclose it. On accused individuals in provocative speeches getting bail from the high court, Khader said that he would discuss the issue with the govt.

Compensate farmers before kharif sowing ends: Cong
Pune: State Congress members have prepared a report on crop damages because of the recent heavy rains and demanded the govt release compensation for farmers before kharif sowing ends. The report is based on field visits by Congress members. The party has accused the Maharashtra govt of neglecting farmers' issues. Additonally, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has sought an appointment with governor CP Radhakrishnan to submit the said report. Though the party has suspended all rallies for the next few days following the plane crash in Ahmedabad, MPCC will hold a statewide Mashal Morcha to raise various issues, including farmers' problems, thereafter. Speaking to TOI, MPCC chief Harshwardhan Sapkal said, "Our party members have visited villages to understand the existing problems. The govt is clearly neglecting farmers, whose condition is beyond imaginable. Heavy rains for three weeks have destroyed crops across the state and onion growers have suffered huge losses. That apart, fruit-growing farmers have also incurred losses. All farmers need immediate govt help, but they have only received promises, so far. " The state govt has already announced release of compensation based on reports by local officials. However, the Congress state president claimed it was not enough. "The criteria are such that farmers are barely getting any money. Our demand is they be paid Rs20,000 per acre as compensation. We also demand the govt use remote sensing technology to assess crop damage, which will help the govt speed up the process," he said. Sapkal said, "For the agrarian economy, kharif is the most important season when maximum crops are produced and revenue earned. If farmers do not get help now, the next year will be difficult for them. Therefore, our demand is the state release the money, which farmers may use for kharif sowing activities." Sule questions crores spent on rain preparedness
Pune: Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Friday said the state govt spends crores of rupees on pre-monsoon preparedness, but roads in big cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur get choked with water even if it rains slightly — raising questions over the quality of works. She held a meeting with Pune municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram on Friday to discuss the city's various issues — including waterlogging, traffic congestion and other infrastructural matters. Sule spoke to reporters after the meeting and said, "Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) claims to have spent crores of rupees on pre-monsoon preparedness. Why are the roads waterlogged then amid slight rain? It is not just Pune, but cities like Mumbai, Nashik and Nagpur are facing the same problem. The state govt promotes urbanisation, but needs to study the concept of development scientifically." She also raised the issue of dilapidated wadas in Pune. She demanded the govt come out with a solution and not wait for mishaps to happen. The Baramati MP highlighted the issue of traffic congestion in the Khadakwasla area. "The neighbourhood faces two major issues at present — traffic congestion and unclean water. We have been demanding that PMC, PMRDA and irrigation department address the water contamination issue in Khadakwasla, but there is no progress, so far. Even the traffic situation is deteriorating," she added. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
