Dearborn Heights man extradited from Guam heads to trial for sexual assault charges

CBS News17-04-2025
A former Dearborn Heights man has been bound over to trial on sexual assault charges, the Michigan Attorney General's office reported.
Jordan Wagner, 31, who now lives in Guam, faces one count of criminal sexual conduct-first degree and three counts of criminal sexual conduct-second degree, according
to a press release
from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. A preliminary exam took place on Thursday, during which a district court judge approved moving the case forward.
His next court hearing is April 23.
Wagner was extradited last fall from Guam to Wayne County to face charges as part of the Operation Survivor Justice project.
Wagner is accused of sexually assaulting a child in 2012, the AG's report said. The victim reported the attack eight years later, in 2020, and charges were filed at that time. "It was known that Wagner was residing in Guam, but extradition proved cost-prohibitive for local agencies," the AG's office explained.
Operation Survivor Justice
, which launched in 2024, has since stepped in with financial support for that expense. The project is a partnership between the Michigan Attorney General's office, local county prosecutors and the U.S. Marshals Service to locate and apprehend those who are facing outstanding sexual assault warrants in Michigan.
"Cold case sex-assault cases that are left unsolved leave survivors without closure and perpetrators without accountability," Nessel said. "I am pleased to see another case proceed through the judicial system as part of Operation Survivor Justice."

Fugitive extradited to Michigan from Georgia to stand trial for criminal sexual conduct

A former Prescott, Michigan, man who was extradited to the state from Georgia in March on criminal sexual conduct charges will stand trial, the attorney general's office announced. On Wednesday, James Carter, 62, was bound over for trial in Hillsdale County on four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of accosting a child for immoral purposes. Carter is accused of sexually assaulting and accosting a minor, along with another victim, in 2008. Authorities say Carter was initially charged by the Hillsdale County Prosecuting Attorney's Office in August 2011. The 62-year-old was extradited to Michigan on March 21 as part of Operation Survivor Justice. Operation Survivor Justice is a partnership with the Michigan Attorney General's Office, county prosecutors and the U.S. Marshals to find, arrest and return to Michigan fugitives with outstanding criminal sexual assault warrants. "Operation Survivor Justice has proven that those who flee criminal allegations cannot evade accountability by crossing state lines," said Nessel at the time of Carter's arraignment. "I am proud to partner with the U.S. Marshals Service and county prosecutors across Michigan on this important work and remain committed to seeing justice delivered for these victims." Carter is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 18.

Live updates: Trump preps for Putin summit, touts efforts to ‘liberate' DC

The White House is preparing for its Friday summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which President Trump says will be the start of the peace process or Russia will face 'consequences.' Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday morning on Fox News that more sanctions were among the 'tools at his disposal.' Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London. The two discussed their expectations for the U.S-Russia meeting, as well as Trump's Wednesday call with European leaders, according to a Ukrainian readout of the meeting. The president's other focus this week is his federalization of the D.C. police force and deployment of National Guard in the district. On Truth Social on Wednesday night, he ripped into the city for its crime rate, saying it is higher than the mayor says it is. On Thursday morning, he promoted a U.S. Marshals Service social media post that touted its work overnight. On Thursday, Trump will sign a proclamation on Social Security, on the entitlement's 90th birthday. Catch up here:

Michigan man sentenced to 58 years for sexual assault of a minor

A Branch County, Michigan, man will spend at least 58 years in prison for the sexual assault of a minor, the Michigan Attorney General's Office said. Alex New, 55, was convicted in June on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct. The 55-year-old was sentenced earlier this week to 25 to 50 years in prison for each count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and 8 to 15 years for second-degree criminal sexual conduct. New was initially charged by Branch County prosecutors in 2016, but left the state and eluded law enforcement until he was found in Florida and extradited to Branch County in June 2024 as part of Operation Survivor Justice. New was extradited as part of Operation Survivor Justice, which is a partnership with the Michigan Attorney General's Office, county prosecutors and the U.S. Marshals to find, arrest, and return to Michigan fugitives with outstanding criminal sexual assault warrants. "Operation Survivor Justice continues to be a vital partnership, ensuring those who commit sexual assault face the consequences of their actions," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. "I commend the courage of the survivor in coming forward, and I am grateful to the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the prosecutors in my office for their work securing this significant sentence." After serving his prison sentence, New will be subject to lifetime electronic monitoring.
