A qualifying lap at the British Grand Prix is one of the most exhilarating of the year. It is probably only beaten by Monaco. In a Formula One car, the first two corners are flat-out at 190mph. I could even do them with one hand.
Village and The Loop
I brake about 60 metres before Village, which means it is a fast entry, before swinging back over to the other side of the track for the left hander at Loop – the second slowest corner on the track. A good slingshot on the exit is pivotal as the Aintree kink takes us on to the long Wellington Straight.
Brooklands, Luffield and Woodcote
Silverstone can be windy because it is built on the site of a World War II Royal Air Force bomber station. It is very flat, too, so I am always watching out for the flags. On the top of the British Racing Drivers' Club building at Brooklands there is a Union Jack. I know if the flag is flying strongly, I can go in hotter because there will be a ton of downforce and the grip will be immense. But if the flag is drooping, I will have to bring it back a touch – braking maybe just two metres earlier – because there is a chance the car might snap and the likelihood of a mistake is greater.

The subsequent long-righter hand through Luffield and Woodcote is probably my least favourite on the track. It goes on forever, but is crucial because it sets me up for the old pit straight and Copse.
Copse Corner
I remember the first time I ever drove at Silverstone, I was in a Formula Four car and I would approach Copse at 130mph before braking and shifting down the gears. But in Formula One, I take it on at 190mph, and the minimum speed through the bend is more than 180mph. It is insane. Imagine you are in a rugby scrum and everybody is trying to push you in one direction. It is a constant force, but its abruptness means it can also feel like a rugby tackle which goes on and on.

My legs are flying one way, my bottom is clenching, and my neck, which is being exposed to 50 kilograms of G-force, just wants to fly off. I might be in and out of the corner in a second, but in that brief moment I tense and I don't breathe.
Maggots, Becketts and Chapel Curve

This is the best sequence of corners in the world and the most impressive place ever to watch an F1 car. I approach at 195mph and decelerate to 145mph through the left-right-left sequence. It feels like a slalom with such incredible flow but I know the tiniest of errors will cost me.
Hangar Straight and Stowe
Stowe is my favourite part of the circuit and one of five corners in F1 that never ceases to amaze me. The car just feels alive. The right hander is so wide it allows me to attack it at more than 190mph. My speed drops to about 150mph as I rise over a small crest where I am aware of the thousands of British fans on the exit.
Vale, Club Corner and Hamilton Straight
I come into the final two corners knowing this is my last chance in the lap. Braking earlier at Vale allows me good momentum on the exit of Club and on to the Hamilton Straight. This approach will not compromise turns one and two which is ideal for the race. But in qualifying, where the finish line arrives earlier, I can carry more speed on the entry to Vale because I do not need to worry too much about my exit and the following lap.

Left footed, Cozier-Duberry has played a lot of football on the right side of the attack but can play centrally and down the left. "There wasn't much of a decision for me to make because once I had spoken to Fergal and Steven, my mind was made up. The conversations were good and they spoke about how much they believe in me and had faith in me, and I want to show that on the pitch. Lando Norris closed the gap on his McLaren teammate in the drivers' championship standings with a supreme win in Austria last weekend. The Brit also topped the free practice timings yesterday, leading FP2 with a 1:25.816. But there is a challenge coming from Ferrari this weekend, triggered by Lewis Hamilton's FP1-leading lap of 1:26.892 and then with Charles Leclerc fastest in FP3 earlier today (1:25.498) ahead of qualifying later. He has also waved at Pierre Gasly for what he felt was the Alpine getting in his way on a flying lap. Still, the Dutchman is closest to Charles Leclerc's session-leading time. Charles Leclerc is fastest, just clocking a 1:25.922 — although still a tenth shy of Lando Norris' quickest time yesterday. Max Verstappen, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli complete the current top four. McLaren at the moment look a little off it. ⏰ 36:12 A moment for Lance Stroll at Woodcote, as the rear of his Aston Martin starts stepping out — and so begins a battle to keep the car pointing forward. He manages it, but the lap is done and the tires are wrecked from a peak performance perspective. And just like that, we also have timed laps for all 20 cars and 17 of them out on track right now. ⏰ 42:01 We're still a little light on cars in FP3. We're up to six drivers with a timed lap now. But there are a lot of drivers heading out, including Lando Norris' McLaren. And there's a lovely moment as Norris gives a big wave to the Landostand at Stowe, as he cruises around on his out lap. Huge support here for the Brit this weekend, in particular. Actually, I wonder how Lewis Hamilton feels about there being a Landostand… Getty Images ⏰ 49:12 Slow going, this FP3 so far. Only three cars have completed a timed lap, and two of them are Alpines. The other is Lewis Hamilton. All of those runs have been on the soft tire — which will come into its own in qualifying later, of course. ⏰ 54:18 Zak Brown currently speaking to Sky Sports from the pit wall, confirmed he did indeed clock how many marbles there were out on the circuit when he did his lap in that iconic Williams car. Hence the delay in the start to FP3. All calm after yesterday's practice at McLaren — but Brown definitely has eyes on Ferrari today and tomorrow, saying its one-lap and longer stint pace is impressive. He clearly sees the red cars as contenders to win at Silverstone this weekend. ⏰ 59:59 Delay done, green lights at the end of the pit lane and Alpine cars swiftly on the track. FP3 is underway! There were a few classic cars taken around the Silverstone track ahead of FP3 — including McLaren CEO Zak Brown driving Nigel Mansell's 1987 Williams F1 charger. And it sounds like that may be responsible for the extra rubber out there, as well as our slight delay. As for the weather, it looks much cooler but just as windy at Silverstone — if not more so. The direction could well flip between today and tomorrow too. So many challenges for these teams. Now then… Race Control has stated the start of FP3 will be delayed. But no word on how long or why — although there are still marshals out on the track clearing loads of 'marbles' from the track. 'Marbles' being small pieces of rubber that come off the tires as they degrade around the track. And now it is confirmed — the delay will only be five minutes. One more hour of rehearsals left — and it starts in five minutes. LET'S GO… Formula 1 It's not quite double the points tally of its nearest rival, but McLaren isn't far off it now. To be honest, there won't be anyone else winning the constructors' championship this season in my view — which I first declared yesterday. And yes, I know we're not even halfway through the schedule. The real fun is behind them, with Ferrari just a point ahead of Mercedes and Red Bull still no nearer finding a point-scoring second driver behind Max Verstappen. There is also only one point between Haas in P7 and Aston Martin behind, while Sauber just two points further back (26). Alpine remains the real struggler, stuck on 11 points at the back of the field and desperate for better. Quickly. Formula 1 It's looking tight at the top — but you can see why it's all about McLaren and no one else. Oscar Piastri's lead is now down to 15 points from Lando Norris, with the pair way clear of Max Verstappen in third. Below Lewis Hamilton, you will find Kimi Antonelli (63 points) while Nico Hulkenberg's 22 points and P10 in his Sauber is arguably the performance of the season so far. Alpine's Franco Colapinto (like the driver he replaced after six races, Jack Doohan) is the only driver on the grid this weekend yet to pick up a championship point. SILVERSTONE, England — Oliver Bearman will head into his first home race in Formula 1 with a 10-place grid penalty after crashing on his way into the pit lane under a red flag. The 20-year-old Haas rookie lost control and spun into a barrier while coming into the pits after the third practice session had been stopped because of an earlier crash for Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto.
