
China unveils mosquito-sized drone
The apparatus in question, developed by scientists at a university in China's central Hunan province, is far from a plaything, however: it's a new drone with a wide range of military and civilian uses.
In a video published by China's state-media over the weekend, one of the scientists is seen holding up a model of the 'mosquito-like type of robot', which he says is 'suited to information reconnaissance and special missions on the battlefield'.
Experts told The Telegraph that while the size of the drone might make it difficult to use on the battlefield, it has plenty of valuable and possibly dangerous uses for information gathering.
'If China is able to produce mosquito-sized drones, it would likely be interested in using them for various intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance tasks, especially in places that larger drones struggle to access, such as indoor areas,' said Sam Bresnick, a research fellow at Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
'These drones could be used to track individuals or listen in on conversations,' he added.
Smaller drones are much quieter and less visible to the naked eye, which could allow them to bypass detection and enter secure and restricted locations without being noticed, such as 'intelligence or secure government facilities', said Timothy Heath, a senior defence researcher and China expert at the Rand Corporation in the United States.
Many secure facilities have technology to block wireless transmissions, so even if the drone could fit through a crack in a window it may not be able to receive commands once inside.
But the use of these microdrones could also extend beyond defence purposes if they were made available to the public.
'People could use the drones to spy on their neighbors or individuals of interest. Criminals could use the drones to infiltrate a business or a citizen's home and observe the entering of passwords,' said Mr Heath.
However, the size of the drone currently limits the amount of technology it can carry. For example, they would use very small batteries, which would have to be charged regularly.
They would also only be able to carry tiny sensors, meaning the operator would have to be located nearby.
'To spy over a long period of time, someone would need to be willing to constantly cycle out microdrones, recharge them, and redeploy them in addition to sifting through the collected data, all within range of the target person or business,' said Mr Heath.
'This is why the drone is less useful for battlefields but more useful for special mission operations or espionage missions,' he added.
The mosquito-sized drones are not the first mini – or insect-inspired – drones on the market.
For more than a decade, scientists at Harvard University have been developing a miniature drone, modelled after bees, called the RoboBee.
Similar to the new Chinese drone, the RoboBee is barely the size of a penny, with two flat wings and four razor thin legs. Certain models are able to both swim underwater and fly.
Its applications are similarly wide-reaching, including search and rescue operations, surveillance and environmental monitoring.
Also on the market are the palm-sized Black Hornet drones, used by armies around the world, including in the UK and the US.
Larger than the insect-sized drones and resembling a mini helicopter, Black Hornets are able to overcome some of the operational challenges posed by the microdrones while still remaining discrete.
Ukraine's Special Operations Forces have used Black Hornets for reconnaissance in Kursk since Russia's invasion in 2022.

Met Police urged to drop facial scanning at Notting Hill Carnival
Civil liberty and anti-racism groups have called on the Metropolitan Police to drop plans to use live facial recognition (LFR) technology at this year's Notting Hill a letter to Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, 11 organisations described LFR as "a mass surveillance tool that treats all Carnival-goers as potential suspects and has no place at one of London's biggest cultural celebrations".They said the decision to reintroduce the technology at Carnival was "deeply disappointing" and argued it could be "less accurate for women and people of colour".The Met Police says LFR is accurate and balanced across ethnicity and gender, and insists it will help keep people safe. The groups - which include Liberty, Big Brother Watch and the Runnymede Trust - highlighted an ongoing judicial review brought by Shaun Thompson, a black Londoner who says he was wrongly identified by the system and letter states: "There is no clear legal basis for your force's use of LFR. No law mentions facial recognition technology and Parliament has never considered or scrutinised its use."Notting Hill Carnival is an event that specifically celebrates the British African Caribbean community, yet the [Metropolitan Police] is choosing to use a technology with a well-documented history of inaccurate outcomes and racial bias." The letter also raised concerns over a 2023 National Physical Laboratory study, which found the NeoFace system used by the Met was less accurate for women and people of colour depending on the algorithm that has been study's authors found the system could show bias at lower thresholds, though at the higher settings the Met says it uses, performance was found to be equitable across ethnicity and thresholds are confidence levels the system uses to decide a match - lower ones flag more people but risk more mistakes and bias, while higher ones are stricter and more said there was no legal obligation for the force to avoid the lower thresholds, and argued policing resources would be better spent on safety measures at the Assistant Commissioner Matt Ward, who is leading this year's policing operation at the carnival, said LFR had led to more than 1,000 arrests since the start of 2024 and that independent testing showed the system was "accurate and balanced with regard to ethnicity and gender" at the thresholds used by the Met. Notting Hill Carnival takes place next weekend and has previously attracted up to two million people. It has come under increased scrutiny after two people were murdered at last year's event. Mr Ward said the force had received the letter and would respond in due course."Carnival's growing popularity and size creates unique challenges. Around 7,000 officers and staff will be deployed each day," he said."Their priority is to keep people safe, including preventing serious violence, such as knife crime and violence against women and girls."It is right that we make the best use of available technology to support officers to do their job more effectively."Mr Ward said the LFR cameras will be used on the approach to and from Carnival and not within the event boundaries. He said they will "help officers identify and intercept those who pose a public safety risk before they get to the crowded streets".BBC News has contacted the carnival's organisers for comment.

Humanoid robots raced and punched their way through three days of a multi-sport competition at the World Humanoid Robot Games, wrapping up Sunday in Beijing. But they also toppled, crashed and collapsed, requiring humans' help and leading to questions about how far, after all, the robots can go on their own. The games featured more than 500 humanoids on 280 teams from 16 countries, including the United States, Germany and Japan, that competed in sports such as soccer, running and boxing at the 12,000-seater National Speed Skating Oval, built for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The event comes as China has stepped up efforts to develop humanoid robots powered by artificial intelligence. Robots were often seen close to their operators, whether they were controlled remotely, held, lifted, sorted or separated. Batteries needed replacing and limbs tuned. Although the robots showed off some impressive moves, some tripped and human intervention was never far from the field. One had to be carried out by two people, like an injured athlete, in a display of the limitations the machines are still facing. Their effect on the audience, however, was not unlike that of real athletes. Cheers erupted when a robot landed a punch, scored a goal, or won a game, showing that viewers were genuinely invested in the machines' endeavors. AI-powered robots are expected to be increasingly used in industrial settings.

Meet the Afghan girls building robots at home after the Taliban stopped their education
In the sweltering heat of Kabul, a group of young women, who have been barred from higher education for the past three years, gather in one of their homes to work on a new project. Calling themselves 'Voices of Hope,' the group's members are former computer science students who refuse to abandon their pursuit of knowledge, despite the Taliban's sweeping ban on female education. They are using the internet and artificial intelligence to reconnect with the subject they once studied at university. In a country where even a walk in the park is off-limits for them, they have created their own community of learners behind closed doors. Their education was interrupted in December 2022, when a Taliban ban forced them to abandon their studies. The young women were all in their second semester of computer science studies at a private Afghan university. Initially, they clung to the hope that public outrage and international pressure might prompt the regime to reverse its decision. Instead, the Taliban, who had seized power in 2021, issued even harsher decrees, further tightening restrictions on women and making their lives even more difficult. Asrar Parsa, the 25-year-old leader of Voices of Hope, told Independent Persian that the university ban caused a wave of despair. But she and 20 of her classmates decided to keep going, turning to online educational resources to continue studying at home. Since then, the team has taken on several projects in their desire to learn, grow and keep their dreams alive. Among their achievements are building two robots from scratch. They cost about 30,000 Afghanis (roughly $430 or £330) to build, paid for by the group members themselves. Under Taliban rule, women are not allowed to go outside without a male guardian. The team has one male member: Asrar's 28-year-old brother, Navid Parsa, a computer science graduate who is their link to the outside world. He runs errands for the group and brings in supplies from the city. The group started off with 20 members. But over time, 14 dropped out due to economic hardship and a growing sense of hopelessness. Asrar explains: 'Our goal was to keep the light of hope alive in our hearts, to stay motivated, and to learn about AI. But most of the team became disheartened and gave up.' However, some chose to stay. 19-year-old Hadiya Ahmadi, says she suffered from depression and anxiety after universities shut down. But working on small projects and learning how to use AI with the support of the group helped her feel better. Over the past two years, the team has used what they learned in their first year of university and supplemented it with online tutorials. They've built two robots and several other devices. One robot can recognise 20 different objects, including humans, and is controlled remotely. The team tested its movement on a kitchen table. It's powered via radio frequency and bluetooth and can be operated through four different apps. Asrar says if developed further, it could be used in search and rescue operations after earthquakes or explosions. The team is also working on building a drone. If successful, they hope it could be used for tasks like collecting rubbish, delivering emergency medicine, or transporting small items across Kabul. For Asrar, Hadiya, and the rest of the group, tinkering with wires and batteries and listening to online lessons is about more than just robotics or AI. In a time when, under Taliban laws, even a woman's voice and face are deemed awrah (something to be hidden), these sessions are a way to cope with the mental and emotional toll of their isolation. Asrar says these gatherings are a way to escape 'the pain and grief brought about by their current situation'. The meetings offer hope, she explains:'When we're together, it feels like not everything is lost. We still have the power to learn and grow.' Hadiya adds that meeting the group two to three times a week has had a positive impact on her mental well-being. They study AI, build robots, and talk about their hopes for the future. She says she feels better now than she did when her university first closed down: 'Seeing the results of our work makes us happy. It makes us feel that our education isn't over yet and we can still try to reach our goals.' They draw inspiration from another Afghan robotics team, known as 'The Afghan Dreamers', which was founded in 2017 and gained widespread attention both at home and abroad. Focused on technology, engineering, and robotics, the team became a symbol of talent and hope in the face of social and political restrictions. After the Taliban returned to power and banned education and employment for women and girls, team members left the country and now continue their work in exile. For Voices of Hope, the Afghan Dreamers serve as an inspiration. But unlike them, Asrar's team has not yet received any support from external organisations. Despite all the obstacles, they hope to one day showcase their work in international exhibitions, and find opportunities to keep chasing their dreams. The Taliban have strictly enforced their ban on education for girls over the age of 12, claiming that they are adhering to 'Sharia law'. These decrees, especially those denying women access to education and jobs, have drawn widespread international condemnation. But Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada has dismissed international pressure as 'pointless.' Over the past four years, Mullah Hibatullah has repeatedly emphasised the importance of 'education within the framework of Sharia and Islamic principles'. However, not once has he addressed the topic of education or employment for women and girls in Afghanistan.
