Keep an eye on the GenAI gender trust gap
However, the level of workplace AI usership is not uniform across all demographics – there is emerging evidence of a GenAI gender use and trust gap. According to our 2025 TMT Predictions report, we estimate that just half of Australian women will use and trust GenAI in the workplace, compared with 70 per cent of Australian men.
The existence of this gender trust gap is not surprising. Women are far more likely than men to have negative interactions with AI. In fact, we predict that this year alone 90 per cent of deepfake harassment will primarily impact women.
This is concerning as AI literacy and proficiency is fast becoming a necessary skill for workers. If women fall behind, it could exacerbate the gender pay gap across a host of different industries.
The onus is on business, government and educational institutions to work together to close the GenAI gender trust gap and encourage women to engage with GenAI at work and at home. But where to start?

We believe that well-resourced employers should take a proactive approach to upskilling their workforce, with a particular emphasis on GenAI training modules that encourage female involvement.
Pleasingly, there has been some momentum in this area. A recent Women in Tech report produced by Deloitte Access Economics and RMIT Online found that 45 per cent of surveyed organisations offer reskilling and upskilling opportunities specifically to drive gender diversity in their technology workforce.
These opportunities are sometimes hosted or developed in association with higher educational institutions and seem to be moving the dial on female participation in the GenAI ecosystem: we currently predict that Australian women will account for 40 per cent of AI-related educational enrolment in 2025.
Often, these programs are narrowcast on encouraging female participation in the technology workforce. To be clear, this is a good thing – just 30 per cent of the technology workforce are women, compared to 44 per cent of the wider workforce.
Increasing the number of women in the technology workforce and in technology roles will have a flow-on effect, increasing overall female knowledge of, and trust in, GenAI technology. But there is also a need to improve the GenAI skills of women working across a range of business functions.
GenAI's application is broad, and the rapid adoption of Agentic AI means its use cases are multiplying exponentially. We believe that some of the industries Agentic AI will have the largest impact on are ones that have a majority of female frontline workforce.
These industries include healthcare, the retail trade and hospitality, further underscoring the importance of employers in all industries making the effort to enhance the GenAI proficiency of their female employees.
Government and industry bodies have a role to play in promoting and funding reskilling and upskilling opportunities, but they can also help close the GenAI gender trust gap in other ways. In a submission to the Senate select committee on adopting artificial intelligence, the Productivity Commission made the point that these organisations could do this not by seeking to improve trust but by seeking to improve the trustworthiness of AI technologies.
In other words, governments and industry bodies should be proactive about setting the appropriate guardrails around AI technologies because if the regulatory settings are right, public confidence will follow.
Fortunately, the federal government has been proactive in promoting voluntary codes of conduct following global developments on AI regulation to ensure it is following best practice when developing guardrails.
It has also taken specific action to criminalise the non-consensual dissemination of sexually explicit deepfakes that overwhelmingly target women.
Getting these guardrails and regulatory settings right is particularly important this year, as we are on the precipice of AI software being a default inclusion in the technology products we interact with every day.
For example, we predict that this year will be the first year that the majority of Australian smartphones will be AI-enabled.
This presents an unprecedented opportunity for most people to familiarise themselves with the basic functions of AI, an important step on the road to closing the GenAI gender trust gap.
With technology like GenAI becoming increasingly central to our lives and to the world economy, we need to remain vigilant and ensure that it is both accessed and understood broadly across all demographics.
This way, technology can be an equalising force rather than something that exacerbates existing inequalities.

Chinese brand Zeekr eyes hybrids in Australian expansion
Zeekr wants to offer more than just electric vehicles (EVs) in Australia, with hybrid models firmly on the cards for a local launch. Qantas unsure who was behind cyber attack, days after personal information of six million customers was stolen
Qantas admits it still does not know who was behind a 'significant' cyber attack days after the personal information of up to six million customers was stolen. The Australian airline first detected 'unusual activity' after a cyber criminal targeted its Manila call centre and gained access to one of its third-party platforms on Monday. An initial review found stolen data included names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and Frequent Flyer numbers. Frequent Flyer accounts, passwords, PIN numbers and login details were not compromised. Initial reports suggested the airline had been attacked by Scattered Spider — an international ransomware group claiming responsibility for cyber attacks against international airlines including Hawaiian Airlines and Canada's WestJet. But Qantas on Friday said it had not been contacted by anyone claiming to have stolen the data. 'We're continuing to work with the government authorities to investigate the incident,' a spokesperson said. The airline said it was working with specialist cyber experts and confirmed there had been 'no further threat activity in the system'. Qantas also said extra security measures had been put in place to 'further restrict access and strengthen system monitoring and detection'. 'This includes additional security measures for Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts to further protect these from unauthorised access, including requiring additional identification for account changes,' a spokesperson said. The airline started contacting affected customers on Wednesday, with Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson 'personally apologising' in a letter for the wide-scale attack. 'I'm writing to inform you that we believe your personal information was accessed during the cyber incident we recently experienced. I want to personally apologise that this has happened and explain what we know and how we're supporting you,' the letter reads. 'Our initial investigations show the compromised data may include names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and Frequent Flyer numbers. 'Importantly, your credit card details, financial information and passport details were not accessed.' Customers who have been hit will be notified next week on the type of personal data that was stolen. 'Next week we will be in a position to update affected customers on the types of their personal data that was contained in the system,' a spokesperson said. 'This will confirm specific data fields for each individual which will vary from customer to customer. 'We have increased resourcing in our contact centres to support our customers and have received more than 5000 enquiries through our dedicated customer support line established following the cyber incident.' Ms Hudson said she was focused on providing 'answers and transparency'. 'We know that data breaches can feel deeply personal and understand the genuine concern this creates for our customers,' she said. 'Our investigation is progressing well with our cyber security teams working alongside leading external specialists to determine what information has been accessed. 'We're finalising a process that will enable us to provide affected customers with more information about their personal information that was potentially compromised.' The airline boss assured customers the airline was taking the data breach 'extremely seriously'. 'Our customers can be assured that we have the right expertise and resources dedicated to resolving this matter thoroughly and effectively,' she said. 'I want to apologise again for the uncertainty this has caused.

Ford Falcon, Holden Commodore police cars get European PHEV SUV replacement
The bahnstorming Volkswagen Touareg R has been signed up by the Western Australia Police Force for use as an emergency response vehicle, following the retirement of its traditional Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon pursuit vehicles. 'Today, we're rolling out our new patrol fleet! Boosting frontline power, safety, and performance. Say hello to the Volkswagen Touareg R turbo diesel hybrid!' said the WA Police Force on its social media channels this week. 'Following the decommissioning of the Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore, a comprehensive review was undertaken to identify an operationally suitable vehicle to withstand the demands of police emergency response driving.' The post erroneously calls the Touareg R a 'turbo diesel hybrid', when it's actually a turbo-petrol plug-in hybrid; the rest of the Touareg lineup, in contrast, features turbo-diesel power. Supplied Credit: CarExpert Priced from $133,490 before on-road costs, the all-wheel drive Touareg R became the Volkswagen brand's first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) in Australia last year. It's powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol V6 augmented by an electric motor, outputting 340kW of power and 700Nm of torque. The German brand claims its large performance SUV can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds, making it quicker than the Commodore SS and Falcon XR police cars of old. Production of the homegrown Commodore ceased in October 2017, a year after Ford also ceased local manufacturing and discontinued its long-running Falcon. While the social media clip released by WA police shows an unmarked version, it's understood the Touareg R will be deployed in both high-visibility and covert roles. It's not clear how many examples of the Touareg R will be purchased by the WA Police Force, which is believed to be the first Australian state to employ the model, but it won't be the first VW enlisted by police in the country's western state. Like other Australian states, law enforcement officers in WA use a variety of sedans, wagons, SUVs and vans, depending on their application. Supplied Credit: CarExpert For both marked and unmarked patrol duty, these include the mid-size Volkswagen Tiguan and large Kia Sorento and Toyota Kluger crossover SUVs, as well as the large Skoda Superb and Kia Stinger liftbacks and the Toyota HiLux ute. The electric Kia EV6 has also been tested by WA police. Depending on their use, each vehicle must meet strict safety and performance requirements, and patrol vehicles are fitted with technologies including number plate recognition. In general, WA police vehicles are replaced less frequently than in other states, every four years or 120,000km. The Kia Stinger remains the highway patrol vehicle of choice in Queensland, but the rear-wheel drive Korean liftback is currently being replaced by the all-wheel drive vehicles such as the BMW 340i xDrive in Tasmania and the Subaru WRX in the Northern Territory. The BMW 530d large diesel sedan, meantime, remains the favourite police pursuit car in New South Wales and Victoria, where the BMW X5 and M5 Competition are also used.
