Phil Steele puts Auburn in elite company with preseason D-Line ranking
Anchored by Keldric Faulk, Auburn's defensive line will be one of the nation's best units, says Phil Steele. Auburn football is poised to have a great offense this season. However, its defense is shaping up to make noise as well during the 2025 season. One unit in particular is catching the eye of a premier name in college football, Phil Steele. Steele, who has published a preseason magazine for over 30 years, included Auburn among his top 25 defensive line units ahead of the 2025 season, sliding the Tigers in at No. 24 ahead of No. 25 Florida State. This year's unit will feature a trio of players who gained valuable playing experience last season. Keldric Faulk and Bobby Jamison-Travis return to anchor the unit while Malik Blocton slides in as a sophomore after playing 305 snaps last season and making two starts. The unit will be deep with reserves as transfers James Ash, Dallas Walker, and Jay Hardy join the depth chart. Faulk and Jamison-Travis are the veterans of the group and will be tasked with leading the young players as they develop into starters themselves later in their careers. Faulk has already noticed quick development in the young linemen, especially in one true freshman. "They are active at all times. When Darrion (Smith) first came in, he was so timid, and he was so impatient to play blocks or even the pass rush. He was laid off, getting active in pass rush," Faulk said. "But now, those guys got so comfortable playing our defense that they make decisions very easy for themselves, and they slow the game down. So they are playing faster and making better decisions." Check out what all Faulk, as well as head coach Hugh Freeze and quarterback Jackson Arnold, had to say during Saturday's press conference. Michigan football bolsters 2027 class with 3-star Texas OL Tristan Dare over top programs
Michigan football is still waiting on some hopeful good news on the 2026 recruiting class front, but it's now starting to build a foundation in the 2027 class -- and where else, but along the offensive line. The Wolverines already have one commitment in 2027 in Saline (Mich.) three-star offensive lineman Louis Esposito (son of defensive line coach Lou Esposito). But on Monday, the maize and blue added another OL to bolster the class. Hailing from Southlake (Tx.) Carroll, Tristan Dare is a three-star that has an offer sheet that reads more like a high-four-star prospect. He committed to the Wolverines on Monday over Florida, Florida State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, and others. Dare is expected to be an interior player along the offensive line and is listed at 6-foot-4, 290 pounds as he prepares to enter his junior year of high school. He is ranked at No. 496 overall, regardless of position, according to the 247Sports Composite. With two commitments in the fold, Michigan is now ranked No. 19 in the 247Sports team rankings for the 2027 recruiting cycle -- which hasn't really gotten underway just yet.

Kirk Herbstreit Named One Of 'Most Annoying' People In Sports Media
Kirk Herbstreit Named One Of 'Most Annoying' People In Sports Media originally appeared on The Spun. Kirk Herbstreit is undoubtedly ESPN's top college football analyst. Make no mistake though, he has ruffled plenty of feathers over the years. During the 2023 season, Herbstreit received a ton of backlash for supporting the College Football Playoff committee's decision to keep Florida State out of the four-team field. Things got so heated that he unleashed a wild rant about the program's "lunatic" fan base. "Its funny when FSU went ahead of The U [Miami] in 2000 after [Char-ron] Dorsey and the boys beat the Noles and FSU went instead of a deserving Canes team to the BCS Championship where they lost to Oklahoma I didn't hear from all of you about the system being rigged and it's not fair. You were big fans of the turnout back then-of course most of you, in this despicable lunatic fringe, probably didn't even know about 2000 when the Noles got the benefit over a GREAT Miami team," Herbstreit wrote on X. Fast forward to this July, and Herbstreit made headlines for dissing "SportsCenter" anchor Elle Duncan. He mentioned her on the "Net Positive" podcast during a rant about broadcasters openly cheering for their favorite teams. "I don't think you can cheer when you do games on a national level," Herbstreit said. "You watch 'SportsCenter' and Elle Duncan is sitting there cheering for Georgia. She's openly cheering. I'm not a fan of that personally. I think it hurts your credibility." With the 2025 college football season around the corner, Herbstreit has been named one of the "most annoying" people in sports media. On July 30, Herbstreit was officially named a No. 1 seed in "The Spun's Most Annoying People in Football Media" bracket. Herbstreit joins Stephen A. Smith, Mel Kiper Jr. and Nick Wright as the four No. 1 seeds in this year's bracket. Last year, Smith cruised past his competition and won the title of "most annoying" person in football media. "Most annoying people in football media. That's what this is about. I don't know how I ended up on this list, but let me say a couple of things," he said last year. "Number one, The Spun, your list is trash. Your bracket is trash. First of all, how the hell do you have Charissa Thompson on that list? She's gorgeous, she's smart, she's good people, she's my friend. Who does she annoy? Really? C'mon wanna throw Skip Bayless up there along with myself? Alright. That's just haterade. Alright. Feel free. I know you all love me. You certainly talk about me enough." We'll see if Herbstreit can dethrone Smith this Herbstreit Named One Of 'Most Annoying' People In Sports Media first appeared on The Spun on Jul 30, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 30, 2025, where it first appeared.
