BANGKOK, July 23 (Bernama) -- Thailand is preparing for Tropical Storm Wipha, which is forecast to track along the monsoon trough stretching across northern Thailand in the coming days.
Deputy Spokesperson for the Thai Prime Minister's Office, Anukool Pruksanusak said the public has been urged to brace for potential disruptions due to the severe weather. This includes the potential immediate closure of schools located in the storm's projected path.

"The government would like to emphasise the safety of the public. Please be prepared to handle the situation, pay attention to warnings, and follow the guidance of government agencies to minimise the impact and prevent potential losses," he said in a statement published on the Royal Thai Government's website on Wednesday.
He said the Agriculture Ministry has been instructed to minimise the impact on the agricultural sector.
Anukool added that the Meteorological Department has issued a warning for Tropical Storm Wipha, which is expected to weaken into a tropical depression and later into a low-pressure system.
He stressed that the storm would bring heavy rainfall to many parts of Thailand, particularly the north, upper northeast, western areas of the central region, and the east, with rain forecast to continue until July 24.
"The government urges people in the affected areas to be cautious of the risks posed by heavy to very heavy rainfall and the accumulation of rain, which may result in flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in foothill regions, areas near waterways, and low-lying zones," he said.
As of Tuesday, it was reported that Tropical Storm Wipha had caused torrential rain and flooding in the Philippines, resulting in five fatalities and the displacement of thousands.

JBPM Records 76 Fire Cases In School Areas This Year

MARANG, July 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has recorded 76 cases of fire that occurred in school areas nationwide so far this year. Its director-general, Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said that 60 per cent of the total cases were identified as being caused by electrical-related factors. "Whether due to wiring, the use of electrical equipment or 'resistance' to the electricity supply, these three elements contributed to approximately 60 per cent of the causes. 'We did not catergorise fire incidents as happening in classrooms, laboratories, stores or others. But we categorised them as the entire school area,' he told reporters after the JBPM's 'National Firefighter Drill 2025' closing ceremony at the parade ground, Fire and Rescue Academy (Eastern Region) in Wakaf Tapai near here today In another development, Nor Hisham said the fire department had begun moving heavy machinery into locations of four current wildfires in Sarawak. He said the entry of the heavy machinery was to enable 'cutting' of the fire line to be carried out to control the rapidly spreading fires. 'Our concern is that if the hot days continue, there will be a descent (of fires) into the peatland areas. So, we have to prepare ourselves to carry out a total flooding,' he said. He said the fire department also received assistance from various parties who were working together to control the fires, such as large companies that have land in the affected areas. A spokesperson for the Sarawak JBPM Operations Centre today announced that wildfires were still reported to be occurring in four locations in the state, involving a total area of more than 88 hectares.

Over 75 fires recorded in schools nationwide this year, says Bomba

MARANG: The Fire and Rescue Department has recorded 76 cases of fire occurring in school areas nationwide so far this year. Its director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said that 60% of the cases were caused by electrical-related factors. "Whether due to wiring, the use of electrical equipment or 'resistance' to electricity supply, these three elements contributed to approximately 60% of the causes. "We did not categorise fires as happening in classrooms, laboratories, stores or others but we instead categorised them as the entire school area," he told reporters after the 'National Firefighter Drill 2025' closing ceremony at the parade ground, Fire and Rescue Academy (Eastern Region) in Wakaf Tapai near here on Tuesday (July 29). In another development, Nor Hisham said the fire department had begun moving heavy machinery to where four wildfires are burning in Sarawak. He said the heavy machinery was to "cut" the fire line to control rapidly spreading flames. "If hot weather continues, fire will descend into peatland areas so we have to prepare ourselves to carry out total flooding," he said. He said the fire department also received assistance from various parties to control the fires, such as large companies that own land in the affected areas. A department spokesperson earlier said wildfires were still reported in four locations in the state, involving a total area of about 88ha. Nor Hisham advised the public nationwide not to conduct any open burning, including burning garbage, especially in this hot season to prevent fires from occurring. "Although the number of wildfire cases this year has dropped by 50% compared to 2024, we are worried of fires occurring in peatland areas because they will spread very quickly," he said. – Bernama

Five dead, one missing as flash flood sweeps through northern Vietnam

HANOI, July 29 — A weekend flash flood in Vietnam's mountainous north killed five people, authorities said Tuesday, while another person remains missing after the deluge. Heavy rains triggering flash floods were reported Saturday night in Son La province, destroying 22 houses, damaging scores more and forcing dozens of families to evacuate, the agriculture ministry said Tuesday. Three bodies were recovered on Monday, a ministry statement said, adding to two others already found dead in the aftermath, with the search for another person still continuing. More than 180 hectares of crops and 2,600 cattle and poultry were also swept away. Vietnam is prone to tropical storms, which often cause deadly flash floods and landslides. Human-driven climate change is causing more intense weather patterns that can make destructive floods more likely. Last week, Tropical Storm Wipha killed three people and flooded nearly 4,000 homes in the country's central Nghe An province. A sudden whirlwind and abnormal weather pattern overturned a tourist boat in Vietnam's Unesco area of Ha Long Bay July 19, killing 39 people, including several children. And in September 2024, Typhoon Yagi devastated northern Vietnam, leaving 345 people dead and causing an estimated economic loss of US$3.3 billion (RM14 billion). — AFP
