Chef Khimraj Nepali looks at the recipe taken from 'Aiman', the AI Chef, at the Trove Restaurant in Dubai.
DUBAI – In Dubai, your dinner might soon come with a side of source code.
Woohoo, a restaurant that bills itself as 'dining in the future', is set to open in September in central Dubai, a stone's throw from the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.
Food at Woohoo will be assembled by humans, for now, but everything else – from the menu to ambience to service – will be designed by a culinary large-language-model called 'Chef Aiman'.
Aiman – a portmanteau of 'AI' and 'man' – is trained on decades of food science research, molecular composition data and over a thousand recipes from cooking traditions around the world, said Mr Ahmet Oytun Cakir, one of Woohoo's founders.
While Aiman cannot taste, smell or interact with his dishes like a chef normally would, the model works by breaking cuisine down to its component parts like texture, acidity and umami, and reassembling them into unusual flavour and ingredient combinations, according to Aiman's developers.
These prototypes are then refined by human cooks who taste the combinations and provide direction, in an effort led by renowned Dubai-based chef Reif Othman.
'Their responses to my suggestions help refine my understanding of what works beyond pure data,' Aiman explained, in an interview with the interactive AI model.
The goal, Aiman's creators say, is not to supplant the human element of cooking but to complement it.
'Human cooking will not be replaced, but we believe (Aiman) will elevate the ideas, creativity,' said Mr Oytun Cakir, who is also chief executive of hospitality company Gastronaut.
Aiman is designed to develop recipes that reuse ingredients often discarded by restaurants, like meat trimmings or fat, he said.
Longer term, Woohoo's founders believe Aiman could be licensed to restaurants across the globe, reducing kitchen waste and improving sustainability. REUTERS

REUTERS/Imran Ali KARACHI, Pakistan - An explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, injured at least 34 people on Thursday, police said, causing panic among residents. The warehouse and some nearby shops caught fire after the blast, which was followed by several smaller explosions, forcing residents to flee for safety on a busy street of the port city. Smoke billowed from a multi-storey building as firefighters worked to put out the blaze, local news channels showed. There was no indication as to what caused the blast. The impact of the blast was strong enough to shatter glass in neighbouring shops, peppering people in the street with shards of glass. Karachi is Pakistan's financial capital and is home to more than 20 million people. At least 34 injured people were admitted to hospitals, said police official Summaiya Tariq. Four of them were in critical condition, she said. "I thought several bombs have exploded," resident Aqib Khan told reporters. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. India's Wipro to buy Harman's digital transformation solutions unit for $375 million

Indian tech firm Wipro said on Thursday it would buy the digital transformation solutions unit of U.S.-based audio products maker Harman for $375 million, aiming to bolster its AI-led engineering services across sectors. The DTS unit, Harman Connected Services, will be integrated into Wipro's engineering global business line once the deal is completed — expected by the end of the year. More than 5,600 DTS employees across the Americas, Europe and Asia will transition to Wipro after the deal closes. "The acquisition of DTS marks a pivotal step in Wipro's ambition to bring to our clients end-to-end, AI-powered engineering services," Wipro Managing Partner and Global Head of Engineering Srikumar Rao said. Harman, owned by Samsung, is best known for its audio brands JBL, Harman Kardon and Infinity. It runs research and development centres in India through Harman Connected Services. The sale will allow Harman to sharpen focus on its core automotive electronics and audio business, it said in a separate statement.

UK targets Iranian oil magnate, four companies with asset freeze

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox LONDON - Britain imposed sanctions on one individual and four entities on Wednesday under its Iran sanctions regime, saying they are part of a network that supports Tehran's overseas activities, including in Ukraine and Israel. The sanctions include an asset freeze on Iranian oil magnate Hossein Shamkhani, and on four companies operating in the shipping, petrochemical and financial sectors, according to a government notice published online. Britain said the network had facilitated hostile activity by the Iranian government, including efforts to destabilise the UK and other countries. Some of the companies were cited for acting on behalf of or at the direction of Shamkhani, who is accused of aiding Iran's overseas operations. Shamkhani was also sanctioned by the United States last month. The sanctions freeze any UK-based assets and bar British individuals and businesses from dealing with the designated parties. REUTERS
