Assault on soul of Constitution: Congress on RSS' call to review 'socialist', 'secular' in Preamble

The Congress party on Friday slammed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) following its call to reconsider the inclusion of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. The party alleged that RSS has "never accepted" Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution and that their demand was part of the conspiracy to destroy it.
The opposition party also said the suggestion by the RSS is a "deliberate assault on the soul of our Constitution".
At an event marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said that the terms 'socialist' and 'secular' were not part of Ambedkar's original draft. He added they were inserted during the Emergency via the 1976 Forty‑Second Amendment, a period when Parliament, judiciary, and fundamental rights were all severely curtailed .
Hosabale said, 'The Preamble Baba Saheb Ambedkar made never had these words. During the Emergency, judiciary became lame then these words were added,' and called for a public debate on whether they should remain.
He also demanded that the Congress apologise for the authoritarian excesses and human rights violations committed during that period

RSS mask comes off; it wants 'Manusmriti', not Constitution: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday (June 27, 2025) said the mask of the RSS has come off again as it wants "Manusmriti" and not the Constitution, after the general secretary of the organisation, Dattatreya Hosabale, sought a review of the words "socialist" and "secular" in the Preamble to the Constitution. "The mask of RSS has come off again. The Constitution irks them because it speaks of equality, secularism and justice," Mr. Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X. "The RSS, BJP do not want the Constitution, they want 'Manusmriti'. They aim to strip the marginalised and poor of their rights and enslave them again. Snatching a powerful weapon like the Constitution from them is their real agenda," the leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha alleged. Every patriotic Indian will defend the Constitution until their last breath," Mr. Gandhi asserted. Addressing an event organised on Emergency on Thursday, Mr. Hosabale said, "The Preamble to the Constitution Baba Saheb Ambedkar made never had these words. During Emergency, when fundamental rights were suspended, Parliament did not work, the judiciary became lame, then these words were added." The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) general secretary said discussions were held on this issue later but no effort was made to remove those words from the Preamble. So whether those words should remain in the Preamble should be considered, he added. "The Preamble is eternal. Are the thoughts of socialism as an ideology eternal for India?" Mr. Hosabale asked.

At SFI national conference, delegates urged to use culture, social media as tools to counter misinterpretations

The delegate session of the 18th all-India conference of the Students Federation of India (SFI) that began in Kozhikode on Friday called upon the organisation's members to explore the culture of the country as well as the possibilities of the social media to counter the misinterpretations, dis-interpretations, and the peddling of half-truths and untruths by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Veteran journalist Sashi Kumar and theatre activist M.K. Raina, who inaugurated the session, pinpointed the importance of culture and how it could be used as a tool for the counter attack. 'Culture is of less importance in the Left ideology where economics is central. But our enemies are using culture as identity. You need to relook into culture and de-mystify the idea,' Mr. Shashikumar said. Mr. Raina said that it was the job of today's Marxists to locate the seeds of modernity in the culture. 'Use culture at every level; not just as entertainment, but for compassion and to get a direction. Organise cultural events. Use culture as a weapon of resistance,' he said. Mr. Sashi Kumar urged the delegates to use social media to spread the truth to counter the 'new normal' that is being put forth by the right wing. 'The mainstream media is under threat. SFI is in the best place to be the filter to provide an alternative narrative,' he added. Mr. Raina went a step ahead and volunteered to train the youngsters in whatever way he could. 'Your mobile camera can do wonders. Use it wisely', he added. Earlier, Mr. Sashi Kumar pointed out that India is mirroring the U.S. in that it is suppressing protests, arresting students and raiding universities. 'USA is a mockery since it is run by a person who states 'I am the State'. Sense of ethics, propriety and decency have been thrown out of the window and truth is a casualty,' he said, and called out the world nations for the hypocrisy of allowing Israel to unleash violence and offering impunity, while the resistances are being reported as malice or a disease. He went on explaining the difference between Hindutva and Hinduism and drew parallels with Zionism and Semitism. 'Both Hindutva and Zionism are poisonous constructs,' he added. Earlier, the conference began as SFI national president V.P. Sanu hoisted the flag. Flags brought from the home towns of 122 student martyrs were also set up at the venue. General secretary Mayukh Biswas, national vice-president Nitheesh Narayanan, joint secretary Debanjan Dev, Minister for Tourism and chairman of the organising committee P.A. Mohamed Riyas and other leaders were present. The conference will conclude on Sunday when Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the public convention on Kozhikode beach.

'Mask has come off': Rahul flays RSS over call to drop 'secular' from Constitution; says 'they want Manusmriti'

Rahul Gandhi (Picture credit: PTI) NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday upped the ante against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh after its general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale made a strong pitch to remove "socialist and secular" from the Preamble of the Constitution. The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha claimed that the Constitution irks RSS because it speaks about equality, secularism, and justice. "The mask of RSS has come off once again. The Constitution irks them because it speaks of equality, secularism, and justice," Rahul said in a social media post on X. "RSS-BJP doesn't want the Constitution; they want Manusmriti. They aim to strip the masses and the poor of their rights, seeking to enslave them once more. Their real agenda is to snatch away a powerful weapon like the Constitution. RSS must stop dreaming this dream – we will never let them succeed. Every patriotic Indian will defend the Constitution until their last breath," he added. This comes a day after Hosabale proposed said that the words "Socialist" and "Secular" were forcibly added to the Constitution and should now be reconsidered. "The Emergency wasn't just a misuse of power, but an attempt to crush civil liberties. Millions were imprisoned, and freedom of the press was suppressed. He said that those who imposed the Emergency and trampled the Constitution and democracy have never apologised." The words "socialist", "secular" and "integrity" were inserted into the Preamble under the 42nd constitutional amendment moved by the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi government in 1976. The amendment changed the description of India in the Preamble from a "sovereign, democratic republic" to a "sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic". Earlier, the Supreme Court dismissed plea challenging inclusion of words "socialist", "secular" and "integrity" to the Preamble of the Constitution. A bench of CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said amendment power of the Parliament extends to the Preamble as well and the fact that the Constitution was adopted in 1949 does not make any difference.
