The enforcement action was taken under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, following an investigation and approval from the Attorney General's Chambers. MCMC stated that the misuse of digital platforms to spread divisive content is taken seriously.
'MCMC takes a serious view of the misuse of digital platforms to spread content that incites racial or religious tensions or disrespects national institutions. Social media users are reminded to remain ethical, respectful, and responsible in the content they post or share,' the commission said.

MCMC begins public consultation on regulatory framework for spam messages
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission today commenced a two-week public consultation on the proposed Regulatory Framework for Unsolicited Commercial Electronic Messages (UCEM), commonly known as spam. In a statement, MCMC said the initiative is pursuant to Section 233A of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which was introduced following legislative amendments gazetted in February 2025. The proposed framework aims to strengthen consumer protection, promote responsible digital marketing practices, and foster a safer and more trustworthy digital ecosystem. In line with the new provision, MCMC is developing subsidiary legislation to establish a clear, coherent and enforceable structure to address the increasing prevalence of UCEM. The public consultation invites feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, including industry players, civil society organisations, consumer groups, lawmakers and members of the public. Stakeholders are invited to review the consultation document and provide feedback on the proposed regulatory approach during the consultation period from Aug 13 until 5pm on Aug 27. "This initiative reflects the commission's commitment to a transparent, inclusive, consultative and evidence-based policymaking process," MCMC said.

RM10,000 fine, two years' jail for teachers caught smoking or vaping in school
KUALA LUMPUR: Teachers caught smoking or vaping in school areas can face up to RM10,000 in fines or two years in prison. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the Education Ministry will not compromise with teachers who smoke or vape, especially openly in schools, as it violates Malaysian Teacher Standards. "This act not only tarnishes the image of the teaching profession but also sets a negative example of students. The MOE takes this issue seriously and will act firmly," Utusan Malaysia reported her as saying. She was responding to a question from Nurul Amin Hamid (PN-Padang Terap) regarding the ministry's measures to curb cigarettes and vape use among students, following allegations that some teachers smoke or vape openly. The smoking ban in schools is enforced under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2004. It also prohibits sales to those under 18 and within 40m of school. "The ministry has also taken proactive measures to curb cigarette and vape in schools, including enforcing Circular No.17 of 2015, which prohibits smoking in schools, as well as Circular Letter No.5 of 1997, which enforces schools as no-smoking areas," she said. Parents, guardians, and local authorities are urged to educate children on the dangers of smoking and vaping to prevent addiction.

Motorcyclist dies after crashing into fallen tree in Tanjung Sedili
KOTA TINGGI: A 26-year-old motorcyclist died after crashing into a fallen tree shortly after midnight on Wednesday (Aug 13). Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said police received a report about the incident, which occurred along Jalan Kampung Teluk/Pelepat, Tanjung Sedili here, at 12.10am. 'The accident was believed to have occurred when the male victim hit a fallen tree and fell from his motorcycle. 'The victim sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the Tanjung Sedili health clinic,' he said in a statement. He said the victim's body has been sent to the forensic unit at Kota Tinggi Hospital for investigation purposes. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a minimum prison sentence of five years and a maximum of 10 years, as well as a fine of between RM20,000 and RM50,000. Supt Yusof also advised the public to remain alert and obey traffic laws and regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.
