Top 10 Active NHL Players With The Longest Playoff Droughts

By Jack Sponagle, The Hockey News Intern
Jeff Skinner's streak of 1,078 games without making thepost-season is over, as he has played one playoff game with the Edmonton Oilers this spring. Ron Hainsey used to have the record of 907 games before he finally gotinto the 2016-17 playoffs with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and then went all theway to a Stanley Cup victory.
While both of those droughts were long, at least theycame to an end. That wasn't the case for Guy Charron, who saw action in 734 NHLgames in the 1970s and early 1980s with the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit RedWings, Kansas City Scouts and Washington Capitals and never once made it intothe post-season.
Here are the 10 active NHL players with the most gamesplayed without ever making the playoffs.
With Skinner's 1,000-plus game drought over, thehard-hitting Philadelphia Flyers blueliner is now the league leader in thisunfortunate stat. He has played in the NHL for 12seasons, eight with the Buffalo Sabres and four with the Flyers.
The Buffalo Sabres defenseman – and No. 1 overall draftpick in 2018 – made the jump to the NHL at age 18. He's now 25 and stillwaiting to see post-season play. The Sabres lastmade the playoffs in 2010-11, when Dahlin was 11.
The third consecutive player to have ties with theSabres, Thompson was traded to Buffalo by the St. Louis Blues in the deal thatsent Ryan O'Reilly the other way. O'Reilly helped lead the Blues to thefranchise's first Cup. Thompson, meanwhile, hasn't played in the first roundyet.
The 27-year old University of Denver product is 73 gamesaway from his 500th outing without his chase for Lord Stanley's Cup ever reallystarting. Terry has been with the Anaheim Ducks for all eight of his seasons inthe NHL, but has yet to appear in the post-season.
Ferraro is another veteran player on another strugglingCalifornia team. The San Jose Sharks haven't made the playoffs since 2018-19,and Ferraro played his first game with the Sharks the following season.
The final player on this list to have spent time inBuffalo is Jokiharju, who's now with the Boston Bruins. The defenseman spentsix seasons with the Sabres after one year with the Chicago Blackhawks. He wasdealt to the Bruins at this year's trade deadline, and the team failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16.
The ninth-overall pick in the 2017 NHL draft is a memberof a Red Wings team that has missed out on the playoffs for the ninth-straightyear. Rasmussen has been with the team for six of those seasons.
The 25-year-old Swede is still relatively early in hiscareer, which has been entirely spent with the Ducks. His teammates, TrevorZegras (268 games) and Mason McTavish (229 games) are both headed for spots onthis list if Anaheim can't turn in some positive results.
Lundestrom's countryman Raymond is another young, promising forward who has yet to get a crack at the playoffs. He's an importantcog in the Red Wings' machine, as one of many promising young players that Detroithas picked up in the last nine years of being in the draft lottery.
The final player to crack the top 10 is the 25-year-old Blackhawks center. A fourth-round choice in 2018, the Swiss native has featured in over300 matches with the Hawks, none coming after the regular season's 82nd game.He edges out Calgary's Morgan Frost (310) and Blackhawks teammate Joe Veleno(306). Perhaps not the honor he would most want to have.

Connor McDavid, 'comfortable' Oilers vie to stop Panthers Stanley Cup repeat

File Photo by Archie Carpenter/UPI | License Photo June 4 (UPI) -- A year ago at this time, Connor McDavid and his teammates rode an emotional roller coaster into a Stanley Cup Final loss. Now, he says the Edmonton Oilers are comfortable ahead of a rematch with the Florida Panthers. The Oilers, who are slight favorites in the series, will host the Panthers in Game 1 at 8 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Edmonton. All matchups in the best-of-seven game series will air at 8 p.m. on TNT, truTV and Max. "It's just dealing with the emotion of it," McDavid told reporters. "You feel closer. There is a big circus. It can feel like it's larger than it is. At the end of the day, it's another series and we are playing another great team. You've gotta beat them before anything else happens. "They have our complete focus. All of our energy is in going in to beat the Florida Panthers. There should be nothing else on anyone's mind." McDavid, widely regarded as the best player in the NHL, would not only cement his iconic legacy with a title, but could help the Oilers snap a 32-year drought for Canada, which hasn't won a Stanley Cup since 1993. He also could follow a similar path to fellow all-time greats Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby, who both won their first Stanley Cups the year after they lost in their first title series appearances. "I see all of the parallels everyone wants to write about," McDavid said. "At the end of the day, this is a different story, different teams, different group. "I'm just excited to have another kick at the can here." General manager Stan Bowman said McDavid's determination to claim his first Stanley Cup is driving the Oilers during this year's title series run. "This is his singular focus," Bowman said. "He's accomplished everything you could accomplish individually in the sport. He continues to dazzle us every game, every round, makes a difference, incredibly motivated and driven to win. You run out of superlatives to talk about him as a player and describe what he does on the ice. I think the thing that's equally impressive is the way he is driving our team with his determination. There is no one else you want to battle with than someone like that. ... You could see how bad he wanted it last year when it didn't go Edmonton's way in Game 7. "Right now, he is on a mission." McDavid's speed skating, anticipation and stick mastery could be the easiest way to spot the contradicting styles that will be at play from the first puck drop on the frozen floor of Rogers Place. McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, two of the top forwards in the NHL, lead one of the fasting moving teams in the league. The Oilers averaged the most shots on goal during the regular season and averaged the most goals per game (4.06) this postseason. McDavid and Draisaitl rank second and fourth, respectively, in points per game this postseason. The Panthers will bring their in-your-face style of physicality and stingy defense, anchored by goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. They don't roster the top-end star power of the Oilers, but two-way forward Aleksandr Barkov and a wave of offensive playmakers carried them to the title series for the third-consecutive year. The Panthers allowed a league-low 2.29 goals per game this postseason, a mark even better than their title-winning run allowance (2.58) last June. They also boast the best penalty kill percentage (87.9) and allowed the third-fewest shots per game among 2024-25 playoff teams. "We are the two best teams in the world and I don't think there is any debate for it," Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk said. "We are here two years in a row. I'm not surprised either team is in this position. It's going to make for a great series." The Oilers will be down one of their stars, with forward Zach Hyman sustaining a season-ending upper-body injury last month, but are still likely to combat the Panthers' aggression with lighting-quick puck movement. Coaches and players from both teams don't expect one style to dominate the series, which stretched to seven games last year. "It's going to be physical," Panthers coach Paul Maurice said. "It's going to be really fast. It's going to be really skilled. I don't think there is one component that's going to take over." Penguins hire Rangers assistant Dan Muse to replace Mike Sullivan as head coach

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dan Muse is the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins hired the former New York Rangers assistant on Wednesday, tasking him with helping the franchise navigate a rebuild during the twilight of longtime captain Sidney Crosby's career. Muse replaces Mike Sullivan. Sullivan and the Penguins split in April after a nearly decade-long tenure that included a pair of Stanley Cup titles. The Rangers quickly scooped up Sullivan, naming him their coach in early May. The 42-year-old Muse was hired after a monthlong search by Penguins general manager and director of hockey operations Kyle Dubas. Muse's hiring leaves the Boston Bruins as the last of eight teams with offseason head coaching vacancies. Dubas said the team met with 'many candidates' before deciding on Muse, who has spent the last half-decade as an assistant at the NHL level. Muse also has a track record as a cultivator of talent and served as the head coach of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program from 2020-23. 'What separated Dan was his ability to develop players, win at all levels where he has been a head coach and his consistent success coaching special teams in the NHL,' Dubas said. 'From his success in developing college and junior players, to his impactful work with veteran players during his time in the NHL, Dan has shown a proven ability to connect with players at all stages of their careers and help them to reach their potential.' Muse takes over a team in transition. The era defined by franchise icons Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang is closing. One of the league's marquee teams has missed the playoffs each of the last three seasons following a 16-year run as a fixture in the chase for the Stanley Cup. Dubas, hired in the summer of 2023 to oversee this transition, has spent most of the last two years stockpiling draft picks. The Penguins have 30 selections over the next three drafts, including 18 over the first three rounds. While Dubas is likely to use some of the picks to trade for NHL-ready players, he has stressed the club's need to get younger and that the club's next core will need to continue to develop once they reach hockey's highest level, as Crosby, Malkin and Letang did when they reached the league in the mid-to-late 2000s. Enter Muse, who has been part of coaching staffs that have won titles in the NCAA and United States Hockey League, as well as at the U18 and U20 world championships. When he reached the NHL in 2017 with Nashville, he oversaw a penalty-kill unit that was among the league's best. He produced similar results when he took over a similar role with the Rangers in 2023. 'His overall body of work, attention to detail and vision for our group showed us that he is the best coach to take our team forward,' Dubas said.

2024-25 Conn Smythe odds, prediction: Connor McDavid installed as favorite ahead of Stanley Cup Final

The 2025 Stanley Cup Final is set to get underway Wednesday and bookmakers are having a really tough time separating the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers. The Oilers have home-ice advantage are slight -130 favorites to win the best-of-seven series at bet365, but if it were the Panthers hosting four potential games then the odds would likely be flipped. Flip a coin. With the odds to win the Stanley Cup so tight, it would make sense that the market for the Conn Smythe Trophy to be the same. Connor McDavid is an even-money favorite to win the Conn Smythe, which would make the Oilers captain the fourth player to win the trophy in consecutive years but the first to do it despite being on the losing team in at least one of those years. Leon Draisaitl has seven goals so far in the 2024-25 Stanley Cup Playoffs. NHLI via Getty Images McDavid currently leads the playoffs in points, assists and shots on goal. Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky (+250) has the shortest odds of any player on the Panthers. Bobrovsky was the only other player in last year's Final to receive a first-place vote besides McDavid. Betting on the NHL? Aleksander Barkov is the third choice on the board ahead of Game 1 at +550 odds. Barkov leads the Panthers in scoring with 17 points, but will also play a pivotal role in attempting to shut down McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in this series. Barkov's two-way game is so well respected that he doesn't need to put up eye-popping point totals to get serious consideration for this award. Leon Draisaitl is the only other player with single-digit odds at +750. The German star is one point behind McDavid in the scoring race and is tied with Corey Perry for the team lead in goals with seven. Conn Smythe betting odds Player Odds Connor McDavid +100 Sergei Bobrovsky +250 Aleksander Barkov +550 Leon Draisaitl +750 Matthew Tkachuk 25/1 Sam Bennett 28/1 Stuart Skinner 33/1 Carter Verhaeghe 60/1 Brad Marchand 75/1 Odds via bet365 Conn Smythe best bet Leon Draisaitl (+750) The oddsmakers seem to be making a stand. They are saying that if the Oilers win this series, McDavid will be given the Conn Smythe Trophy. While there is certainly a strong chance that it happens, McDavid is just one point ahead of Draisaitl in the scoring race, and it's the German who has more goals in his account in the playoffs. If Draisaitl continues at his current pace and scores a couple of big goals in this series en route to an Edmonton victory, he will be neck and neck with McDavid.
