Gearing Up: Big Week Ahead at Long Beach

It's a certified big week for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES when walk of fame inductions are part of the festivities.
The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach will be held for the 50th time this weekend, highlighted by the third race of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
Next to the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, Long Beach is the longest continuously held event on the calendar. Since 1984, races have been staged with much of the glitz that comes with being located just down the road from Hollywood. The only break in the event's history was in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented large urban gatherings such as this one from being held.
Long Beach is one of Southern California's premier sports spectacles and North America's most famous street race. Last year, officials announce a record attendance of 194,000 for the three days of on-track action.
Some of the biggest names in the sport's history have won on what is now an 11-turn, 1.964-mile street circuit. Mario Andretti won three of the first four races, including the first two, while his son, Michael, won twice as a driver and six times as a team owner. Al Unser Jr. holds the record for most INDYCAR SERIES wins by a driver with six.
Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing have seven Long Beach wins each, including two of the past three. Last year, CGR's Scott Dixon won for the second time in the most dramatic of fashions, holding off Andretti Autosport's Colton Herta, Team Penske's Josef Newgarden and teammate Alex Palou in a late-race dogfight.
This week, Dixon will be inducted in the Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame as a two-time winner of the event. He also won in 2015.
Other Walk of Fame inductees this week include Jim Michaelian, the longtime president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, and three-term Long Beach Mayor Beverly O'Neill, who never missed a grand prix in her 12 years in office.
Long Beach was the site of Kyle Kirkwood's first NTT INDYCAR SERIES race win in 2023, and he will arrive in Southern California solidly in championship contention in sixth place. Newgarden won this event in 2022.
Herta, Ed Carpenter Racing's Alexander Rossi (twice) and Team Penske's Will Power (twice) are former Long Beach winners competing in this field.
While Long Beach always offers significant star power, the brightest star in this series is currently Palou. He has won the first two races of the season and will look to become the first driver since Dixon in 2020 to win the first three races of the year. Prior to that, it was Sebastien Bourdais winning the first four races of the 2006 Champ Car World Series races.
Palou will be seeking his first Long Beach victory. He has finished third twice, including last year, and all four of his finishes have been within the top five. A win also makes him a candidate for a future place in the event's walk of fame. But that's for another day.
The first NTT INDYCAR SERIES practice of the weekend is Friday at 6:05 p.m. ET. Saturday's action includes the second series practice at 11:30 a.m. ET and qualifying for the NTT P1 Award at 2:35 p.m. ET. Sunday's warmup is set for noon ET. All of this action will be available on FS1 and the INDYCAR Radio Network.
The 90-lap race has its green flag slated for 4:40 p.m. ET.

2025 Bears game-by-game predictions: Playoffs in Year 1 under Ben Johnson?
I'm optimistic about the Chicago Bears. There's a sentence I haven't said in a while. They've done everything right (and differently!) this offseason, and it looks like they'll be much improved this season. However, that doesn't necessarily mean the Bears will be in the playoffs or win the NFC North. They still have to walk before they can run. After winning just five games last season, the bar for improvement is pretty low. I think they'll surpass their 2024 win total, but let's not get carried away with expectations again in Ben Johnson's first year as head coach. There will still be an adjustment period as the team gets used to his system and as he learns his roster. With that in mind, here's an early look and prediction for each game on Chicago's schedule. Week 1: vs. Minnesota Vikings, Monday, Sept. 8 CHI -115, MIN -105 At home in what will presumably be Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy's first start, I think the Bears have the upper hand. That is, if Brian Flores' defense isn't already in midseason form. Result: Win, 1-0 record Week 2: at Detroit Lions, Sunday, Sept. 14 (FOX) CHI +180, DET -218 The NFL schedule makers wasted no time bringing Ben Johnson back to Detroit, and there's going to be so much extra juice there that I think the Bears can propel themselves to a win for their new coach. It also may take some time for the new coordinators in Detroit to get their footing, as well as defensive end Aidan Hutchinson to return to form. Result: Win, 2-0 record Week 3: vs. Dallas Cowboys, Sunday, Sept. 21 (FOX) CHI -155, DAL +130 Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will be back from injury and a couple of weeks into the groove of the new season. Dallas added more weapons for him as well as help up front, so I would count on a strong start to the season for the Cowboys. Result: Loss, 2-1 record Week 4: at Las Vegas Raiders, Sunday, Sept. 28 CHI -120, LV +100 This is a complete toss-up with the overhaul that happened in Vegas this offseason. I'm betting it's early enough in the season that the Raiders haven't found their stride quite yet. On paper, Chicago has the better team, too. Result: Win, 3-1 record Week 5: BYE Week 6: at Washington Commanders, Monday, Oct. 13 CHI +164, WSH -198 Chicago will be itching to avenge last year's loss to Washington on an insane Hail Mary, but as the Rolling Stones told us, you can't always get what you want. The Commanders only got better from last season and still have a ton of momentum coming off a deep playoff run that saw them challenge for the NFC title way ahead of schedule. Result: Loss, 3-2 record Week 7: vs. New Orleans Saints, Sunday, Oct. 19 (FOX) CHI -325, NO +260 This is one of the only benefits of this year's fourth-place schedule. The Saints will presumably be relying on a rookie to be their starting quarterback, and they still have holes all over their roster. It doesn't seem like their bounce back is coming this season, so this should be a win for Chicago. Result: Win, 4-2 record Week 8: at Baltimore Ravens, Sunday, Oct. 26 CHI +245, BAL -305 Playing Lamar Jackson is always a challenge, but playing him in Baltimore will be especially difficult. Result: Loss, 4-3 record Week 9: at Cincinnati Bengals, Sunday, Nov. 2 CHI +136, CIN -162 Getting the AFC North was really a tough straw to draw for the NFC North, which is already the toughest division in football. Sure, the Bengals finished in third place in their division last season, but with some shakeups and retentions this offseason, I don't expect Cincinnati to be down for long. Result: Loss, 4-4 record Week 10: vs. New York Giants, Sunday, Nov. 9 (FOX) CHI -218, NYG +180 There are a lot of question marks with the Giants still, perhaps not who will start at quarterback in Week 1 but certainly in Week 10. They also still need a ton of help along the offensive line, so this should work in Chicago's favor. Result: Win, 5-4 record Week 11: at Minnesota Vikings, Sunday, Nov. 16 (FOX) CHI +110, MIN -130 I think it's a pipe dream for any NFC North team to sweep a division rival this year. The Bears have been the division punching bag for the past few seasons under Matt Eberflus, so splitting the season series in Johnson's first year is a big win for them. Result: Loss, 5-5 record Week 12: vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, Sunday, Nov. 23 CHI -130, PIT +110 The Steelers' defense is still formidable, but I think any team can win against them as long as they don't have a franchise guy under center. It's hard to say what exactly Aaron Rodgers is at this point. Result: Win, 6-5 record Week 13: at Philadelphia Eagles, Friday, Nov. 28 CHI +250, PHI -310 A year ago, Chicago came out of Thanksgiving weekend in search of a new head coach, so a date with the defending champs at their place actually marks a slight improvement. The Eagles never seem to take a true step back, even after reaching the mountaintop thanks to general manager Howie Roseman's team-building efficiency. Result: Loss, 6-6 record Week 14: at Green Bay Packers, Sunday, Dec. 7 (FOX) CHI +154, GB -185 Winning back-to-back games at Lambeau would really solidify Johnson and quarterback Caleb Willliams as the future of the Bears franchise. For that reason, I think there remains some mystery about Chicago losing to the team up north in their first meeting of the season. Result: Loss, 6-7 record Week 15: vs. Cleveland Browns, Sunday, Dec. 14 (FOX) CHI -298, CLE +240 I want there to be hope for the Browns, but I just don't think that happens as long as they're hamstrung by Deshaun Watson's contract. Next year should be a fresh start, but until then, I think they're the game every team is circling as a win on their schedules. Result: Win, 7-7 record Week 16: vs. Green Bay Packers, Saturday, Dec. 20 (FOX) CHI +100, GB -120 The Bears get to avenge their loss at Lambeau with a win at Soldier Field — a place Jordan Love is unbeaten at. That's encouraging in its own right as the Bears start to wrap up the first season of the Johnson era. Result: Win, 8-7 record Week 17: at San Francisco 49ers, Sunday, Dec. 28 CHI +150, SF -180 It's a tough trip, and the 49ers shouldn't be a rollover opponent despite their fourth-place finish in the NFC West last year. They're the reason this is not the year to be playing a last-place schedule. Result: Loss, 8-8 record Week 18: vs. Detroit Lions, TBD CHI +102, DET -122 It can't all be a fairy tale. With a potential playoff berth on the line, Chicago again draws one of its toughest opponents. The Lions will have found their groove by this point and probably be staring down another postseason berth, too, if not the NFC North crown. Here Are The Automotive Events On Jalopnik Readers' Bucket Lists
What car event have you always wanted to attend but just haven't managed to make it for one reason or another? There are so many incredible car gatherings around the world, from Mille Miglia to King of the Hammers, there's something for just about everyone. I've been lucky enough to see almost every event my little gearhead heart could ever dream of, bar one, the Goodwood Festival of Speed. One day I'll have to make the trip over and see it in person, but for now it remains the biggest event still on my list of things to do before I kick the proverbial bucket. Earlier this week we asked all of you to tell us about the event still on your bucket list, and you did not disappoint. With dozens of great suggestions to choose from, we picked ten of our favorite answers and included them below. Hope to get to it one day. Suggested by Dan60 The Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, OK Sage Net Center, two weeks after Christmas. I'm not all that big of a fan of Tulsa, but the racing is supposedly incredible. An international cast of the baddest midget drivers, sprinkled with NASCAR and Indycar stars slumming for the week. A week of cut-and-thrust midget heats, sub-features and last-chance qualifiers capped with a Saturday night A-Main. Suggested by jrhmobile The Lane Museum's 'Rally for the Lane' I participated in the first one and it was a blast. Unfortunately, trying to convince a group of friends to shell out a grand apiece to spend a weekend driving a weird foreign car through rural Tennessee is more challenging than one would expect. Suggested by Earthbound Misfit I Spa. I have not been as in to F1 as I used to be, 10-, 20-, 30- years ago, but I'd still love to see F1 cars go through Eau Rouge at speed once in my life. Suggested by WeryPert1 This might seem like an odd choice, but as someone not from the States, I would really like to attend RADwood some day. It is much smaller in scale than a lot of the major automotive events around the world, but it happens to represent my favorite automotive era. Suggested by epep- I lived and worked out there but never had the chance to see it in person - the Africa Eco Race. It's kind of a pared down Paris - Dakar when it was still run in Africa. But this course snakes through the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, through Mauritania, and into Senegal. It's stunning country out there. Downside, while staying/eating there won't destroy the budget, flights will cause the credit card to wince. And personal security is always an issue in some of the areas where the route passes through. Stateside, I'm still kicking myself for not getting my MX-5 up and down the Pikes Peak route. But it's still on my bucket list. Suggested by Xavier96 Any WRC event in Europe. Rallying is amazing, European fans are out of their minds. The settings and courses are beautiful. Suggested by JohnnyWasASchoolBoy Sure it is riddled with issues but after visiting Monaco during spring break more than 20 years ago, I still want to attend the Grand Prix before I get too old to travel. The city is beautiful and I got chills just walking through the famous tunnel under the Fairmont Hotel, imagining the cars wailing and transitioning as they exit. There are so many elevation changes and turns and the concept of turning a small coastal city into a race course ticks so many boxes on my happy list. Like my previous trip, I will most likely stay in much more reasonably priced Nice and take the train over. Or, I could rent a scooter, lose my riding buddy within 10 minutes, and accidentally wind up in Monaco (this was before Google maps). Back in 2003, a dirty martini at the Casino Monte Carlo set me back €20, so I can't imagine how expensive things are nowadays. It might be five figures alone just to get tickets for two people for the race weekend. As a runner up, I want a chance to drive a fun car (most likely an M Car), at the Nürburgring on a tourist day. It's not a proper motorsports event but would certainly be the highlight of my amateur weekend warrior track day career. Suggested by ODDseth Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. Nothing more to add, really. Suggested by Pete I grew up in Indianapolis and my dad took me to the Indy 500 when I was probably 9 or 10 and it was... boring as hell. We even had fantastic tickets- across from the pits and under the big roof so we didn't get baked by the sun. Jim Neighbors sang, a really old lady said "gentlemen start your engines," There was a pit fire where one of the pit crew spilled fuel and the car caught on fire, that super weird clear fire you can't see except for the effects it has on anything near it, it was objectively a cool experience but I was 9 and it was 4 hours of watching cars blur past in a straight line over the bricks. So, I'd love to go back. I'd love to go to the 500 as an adult who has patience and some understanding of what was going on. As a hoosier, even a former hoosier who'll never move back, I feel like this is a thing I need to do. Maybe I can take my own kiddo and help her see why the 500 is the greatest spectacle in racing.
