Visakhapatnam: The operations of the new railway zone, South Coast Railway (SCoR), are likely to commence from
Dussehra
as the temporary office of the general manager of SCoR was finalised.
Tenders will be called for the interior works and other preparations for the operations. However, there is still no clarity over the adjustment of the employees, sources said.
The temporary office will be set up on two floors (sixth and seventh floors) of the newly constructed building 'The Deck' in front of the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (VMRDA). The newly appointed General Manager, Sandeep Mathur, already visited the structure, and 41,500 square feet of space will be utilised for the office of the GM and 15 various department heads (HODs).
Apart from them, another 30 officers and around 700 employees will extend their services.
After a couple of years, the GM office will be shifted to the permanent building, which is currently under construction.
The agreement between the railways and VMRDA will be completed in a week or two. It is recalled that the railway board gave the green signal to the detailed project report (DPR) of the division of the Waltair Division and the formation of the new Visakha Division.

According to railway sources, a major freight earner line, including the KK line, will be merged into the newly formed Rayagada Division of East Coast Railway.
So far, there has been no gazette notification over the zone.
The Visakhapatnam MP, M Sribharat, says that the dates of the gazette notification and the commencement of operations of the zone will be finalised soon. The NDA govt in the state and centre is committed to starting the new zone operations.
Railway sources said that Andhra Ooty, Araku, is now merged into the new Rayagada Division from the Waltair Division. Although there were requests to keep the highest revenue earners, Araku and Koraput routes (KK Line), in the newly forming Visakha Division instead of the Waltair Division, the authorities, including the railway board, did not consider it.
The Waltair Division is one of the highest freight earners in the country, generating around Rs.
8,000 crore out of the Rs. 15,000 crore of the entire East Coast Railway Zone, according to a high-ranking official in the Waltair Division. The new zone, SCoR, will have advantages with the biggest loco shed, electrical loco shed, and a spacious marshalling yard, which are in the existing 125-year-old Waltair Division, becoming the Visakha Division.
The Visakha Division will have a 410 square kilometre extent of the Waltair Division, and the remaining 680 km will be merged into the Rayagada Division. Vizag to Palasa in Srikakulam district will be in the Visakha Division, and Palasa to Icchapuram in the Srikakulam district will come under the Khurda Division of East Coast Railway, sources said.
